Hi,
1337 is only the initial number of elements. You can set the number with setNumber() asynchronously at any time. By using setPage() without any arguments you can refresh the user-interface with new options and a new number of pages if you've changed anything.
So, you get the total number of elements via the PHP script, which is called via Ajax? You could set up the periodical ping to check for a new number of elements and set the last buttons to inactive in the onFormat callback.
I hope I got it right what problem you have, if not please describe it a bit more verbose with a little example.
