finder's Issues

Create top 50 city pages for SEO

Once the Gatsby site is live, we can write a quick gatsby-node script for this. Basically, we want to render static pages for the top 50 (or so?) cities with Hack Clubs, with a wide radius. The pages will have lots of keywords on them, like “Chicago high school coding clubs”, to improve our SEO and rank for people looking for local clubs/events.

I can totally help out with this once the basic Gatsby site is ready!

Icons too large on page load

After about half a second they snap back to the correct size. This might be a problem with Font Awesome (unlikely) or the way Font Awesome is being added to the project.

Homepage not easily accessible from other pages

The only ways to get back to the homepage from another page are:

  1. Go back until you reach it
  2. Type in the URL

Proposed solutions:

  1. Make Orpheus's flag link to / instead of hackclub.com
  2. Add another link to the homepage instead of changing the flag's link

Better handle result status

Right now, the "no clubs found near you" card shows up as soon as you type in a query. It should only show after it has searched and found no clubs before showing.

Search clubs by location broken

Results don't show when you type in a place you want to search for. I'm guessing the API changed a little. Will need to pinpoint this problem ASAP.

Support metric system measurements

Currently, distances are only shown in miles (imperial system). Most non-US countries use the metric system, so we'll need an option that'll allow users to toggle between measurement systems.

Ideas:

  • Guess preferred measurement system based on location (by country)
  • Add switch below search bar

Results offer limited information

The functionality of finder is currently limited by the fact that it doesn't provide sufficient information about the clubs it finds, beyond just giving their locations. I think that a good start would be adding a link and maybe founders' contact information to each result.

Make it clear no results are found

Right now it's not clear if there was an error or there were no results when I search in a location that doesn't show any cards. It would be great if it could tell me there were no results in the area or if there was a loading issue.
