Evidently the Windows 10 viewer does some kind of correction for this situation, since it seems to do shadowing:

The windows viewer uses really soft shadowing, most likely because they need to use a high shadow bias for scenarios like this (and other stuff you have to fake with shadow maps). We can increase our shadow bias so we don’t get self shadowing, but shadows will “detach” from their objects a bit.
