hodl-wallet-android's Introduction

Hodl Wallet - The easy and secure bitcoin wallet for Android

download

Bitcoin done right

This is the Android port of the Hodl Wallet iOS app, which can be found here.

A completely standalone Bitcoin wallet

Unlike other Andriod Bitcoin wallets, Hodl is a standalone Bitcoin client. It connects directly to the Bitcoin network using SPV mode, and doesn't rely on servers that can be hacked or disabled. Even if Hodl disappears, the app will continue to function, allowing users to access their money at any time. You can also recover Hodl's backup up recovery key in other Bitcoin wallets if necessary as we follow BIP standards for wallet generation.

The next step in wallet security

Hodl utilizes AES hardware encryption, app sandboxing, and the latest iOS security features to protect users from malware, browser security holes, and even physical theft. Private keys are stored only in the secure enclave of the user's phone, inaccessible to anyone other than the user.

Simple yet robust

Simplicity and ease-of-use is Hodl's core design principle. A simple recovery phrase (which we call a Backup Recovery Key) is all that is needed to restore the user's wallet if they ever lose or replace their device. Hodl is deterministic, which means the user's balance and transaction history can be recovered just from the backup recovery key.

Features

Localization

Hodl is available in the following languages:

  • Chinese (Simplified and traditional)
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • French

Recovering your funds with other Bitcoin Wallets.

It may be necessary at somepoint to recover your bitcoin via your Hodl Wallet Backup Recovery Key (seed) using another Bitcoin wallet. In this case it is important to know what path Hodl Wallet derives your keys from.

Derivation path

Hodl Wallet conforms to BIP32 standards when generating your wallet.

Derivation Path - m/0'

Recovering funds with Electrum

If you find yourself with the need to recvor your funds with an external app, Hodl Wallet reccomends Electrum.

It's important that you make sure you our downloading Electrum from the real source. You can do this by double checking the ssl certificate at the site or building from source.

Steps to recovering your bitcoin using Electrum:

  1. Select New/Restore
  2. Name the Wallet
  3. Select Standard Wallet
  4. Select "I have the seed"
  5. In options select BIP39
  6. Enter the seed
  7. Select Path m/0'

NOTE: If you wish to recover funds in legacy addresses you must repeat the process in Electrum while the existing wallet showing your balance in the segwit addresses is open. Do this by selecting File --> New/Restore. Electrum allows a user to manage multiple wallets and seeds at once.

hodl-wallet-android's Issues

Notifications do not work

Notifications do not work if turned ON on Android 8.1 and higher based on my testing. I am forking this app for another coin and found this to be the case. Additionally, by adding some code to create notification channels, then this can be resolved.

I can submit a pull request with a solution, if there is interest.

Submit App to F-Droid

F-Droid URL: https://f-droid.org/
F-Droid Wikipedia: https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Droid

Contribution/Submit Applications: https://f-droid.org/en/contribute/#submit-applications
Inclusion Policy: https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Inclusion_Policy
Request For Packaging Tickets: https://gitlab.com/fdroid/rfp/issues

F-Droid is application & app store for android apps (alternative to Google Play) that accepts only FLOSS (free/libre and open-source) apps and doesn't require any account creation/login in order to download apps.

The requirements for being included into f-droid are here: https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Inclusion_Policy/

The process for getting an app published to f-droid is outlined here: https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Inclusion_How-To/ https://gitlab.com/fdroid/rfp#submission-queue https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroiddata/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

You can open a RFP (Request For Packaging) ticket here: https://gitlab.com/fdroid/rfp or an user can do so, provided you agree to include this app in F-droid (a comment to this issue is enough for it)

Some users don't have play-store on their devices as they are degoogled devices or don't create/use google account (using aurora store app https://auroraoss.com/ in anonymous mode (which is available on f-droid) is solution to still get apps from google-play) or using OS/custom ROMs that don't have it included, such as: (Some bundle f-droid by default)

https://grapheneos.org/ GrapheneOS
https://calyxos.org/ CalyxOS
https://lineageos.org/ LineageOS
https://lineage.microg.org/ LineageOS for microG
https://e.foundation/ /e/
https://www.replicant.us/ Replicant

Downloading APKs from official places like github releases or website, or from unofficial sources like APK downloading sites https://apk.support or https://apkpure.com/ etc... will avoid the play-store/google dependency but it's lack automatic update mechanism unless it's built in into the application, F-Droid solve this.

Once the app is published into f-droid add the below image code into
README.md to show that the app available on f-droid:

Releases at Github

It looks like you've stopped tagging and providing the APK here at Github a while ago: the last version available here is v2, while at Play there is v3.3.5. Could you pick up releasing here again, so folks without Play can use up-to-date versions? Thanks!

Reinstalled wallet has a different BTC address

Uninstalled my HODL wallet as a payment wasn’t showing. When I reinstalled the wallet with the only seed phrase I’ve ever had with HODL, my Bitcoin address was different. I don’t have access to my funds.
I sent BTC from Trustwallet bc1q7quhsy9pm34g2ya7sh5dq5rvkset7ntmhnxs5s and Coinbase 3LntukHx47ERu39GbCVKG1z53yUwUdkcRf to HODL bc1qu9cm4e602vpnyngpszaa9g6vmcnxugmaed7es6, which is my HODL BTC address, on 04/06.

This was taking a long time to confirm so I sent a message to uphold. In the meantime, I uninstalled and reinstalled my HODL wallet. When reinstalled the BTC address had changed to bc1q83p80g8gmdkmqhngdhwck7recpkxw3un0pvku4 so I did not receive the funds from Trustwallet or Coinbase.

Looking on the blockchain checker it says that wallet bc1qu9cm4e602vpnyngpszaa9g6vmcnxugmaed7es6 has only had the 2 transaction as stated above and the new HODL address bc1q83p80g8gmdkmqhngdhwck7recpkxw3un0pvku4 has had no transactions.

This is also incorrect as funds have been deposited and withdrawn from my HODL wallet prior to this.

Please tag your released versions

I see the versionName is 3.3.5 but there is no such tag which makes it ambiguous as to which exact revision was compiled for that version on Google Play.

Negative "Starting balance"

screenshot

This resolved itself on its own after restarting the app and now properly shows 0 as the starting balance and the payment amount as the ending balance.
