About

This is a mod for various strategy games, that adds new place names based on their culture/faction.

The names are meant to provide an immersive and accurate experience for the game's setting and time period.

Manual installation

  • Download the latest release
  • Extract the contents into your game's mod directory

Compatibility

The mod is OS-agnostic, which means that it will work on all of the operating systems supported by the game.

It is actively tested (and developed) on Linux, where it is guaranteed to work with either the native version of the game or through Steam Play.

It is also save-game compatible, and can be added and removed at will without breaking anything.

Arabic romanization system

I'm the guy who commented on the steam mod page, thought better post it here too.

I read the Roadmap that Arabic toponyms need work and I think I can help. I don't speak Arabic, but I have a working knowledge of reading Arabic script. May I know which Arabic romanization system is used in this mod before I do anything silly?

Brythonic naming for e_Brittania

I noticed the only name variation for the Empire of Brittania for both Brythonic and Goidellic cultures is "Cruithn".

Firstly this is modern Irish, the period correct spelling would be "Cruthin" for Old Irish or "Cruithnig/Cruithni" for Middle Irish.

Secondly this word is only fitting for the Irish and Gaelic cultures. Here are some proposed alternatives for the other cultures in the Brythonic group.

Prydain (old welsh) can technically be used for all of them or Ynys Prydein (middle) specifically for Wales. Alternatively Pritani is the original Brittonic Celtic word but for the sake of variation could be used for Pictish, Cornish and Breton only. Additionally the original game variations of Pictavia and Alba might be used;

Welsh - Prydain
Cornish - Prydain
Breton - Pritani
Cumbrian - Pritani
Pictish - Pictavia
Gaelic - Alban
Irish - Cruthin

Lastly I also noticed there is no Anglo-Saxon entry. Alfred the Great translated "Orosius' Seven Books of History Against the Pagan" and used the term "Bryttania" so I feel this would be appropriate.

btw I modded a new "paeonian" culture for my mod and I wanted it to use all of your serbian localisations. Heres my easy way: I searched and replaced all "serbian =" and replaced them with "paeonian =" then I wrote this regex expression "(?:(?:(?:paeonian\ =\ ")(?:.)(?:"))|(?:(?:.)(?:)(?:.)(?:=\ {))|(?:(?:.)(?:})))" to mark all lines with "paeonian" or "" or "}". Copy and paste into new file et voila: a new culture with all localisations (only those from HIP/SWMH are missing ofc). Thought you might want to know this.

Latest CK3 mod version (v22.172.0) is not backwards compatible with v1.6.0.1<=

For example CK3 v1.6.1 added the Guanche Culture which data is not available on previous versions. Doesn't cause crashes from my testing, but causes missing translations/strings.

Proposed fix:

Edit descriptor.mod supported_version to "1.6.1.*" or with proper semantic versioning restrictions and lack of better versioning syntax "1.6.1".

MB Naming

This is less an 'issue' and just me letting you know about something if you ever felt up to it as no one's ever really going to notice it. When I was adding/changing titles I sometimes (a lot of times?) just re-localized a title since that was admittedly just easier to do then changing the province map or renaming the internal name of a title ie c_bouillon being localized as Chiny or how I use the Golden Hordes title for the White Horde for every bookmark outside one. All the new titles or titles whose names I replaced are in NB_Titles_l_english in the replace folder of the mod.

causes multiplayer lag

Idk from what it seems when playing on hoi4 it opens a lot of timed decisions and when opening decisions it creates massive amounts of lag? why?

Sicilian counties incorrectly localized

The county that SWMH labels as "c_siracusa" is NOT the county of Syracuse/Siracusa. It is Paterno/Paternionis/Batarnù/etc. This MCN mod includes localization for that county such as italian = "Siracusa" and roman = "Syracusae". This is what I am trying to point out as incorrect. Those names are historical and using them is fine, but NOT for c_siracusa. You would want to use those for c_modica, because that county contains the city of Syracuse/Siracusa. This mod already has crimean_gothic = "Syrakousai" # Historical? Copied from Greek under c_modica correctly, it is just all the other cultural localizations that are incorrectly placed under c_siracusa.

Similarly, this mod has a line roman = "Drepanum under the county that SWMH labels as c_trapani. However, c_trapani is not the county of Trapani. The actual Trapani is a barony in c_palermo, and I can see no evidence that the central province of Sicily was ever named anything related to Drepanum.

As I noted in my follow-up post, the Sicilian provinces are all badly named in SWMH (obviously not the fault of this mod). There are six provinces on the island of Sicily: c_palermo, c_messina, c_siracusa, c_modica, c_agrigento, and c_trapani. Their default names in SWMH are in the same order Palermo, Geraci, Paterno, Modica, Butera, and Aderno. You can see that few match the scripted c_ name. It's even worse, though. While c_palermo contains b_palermo, c_modica contains b_modica, and c_agrigento contains b_girgenti (equivalent names in different languages), the other three counties DO NOT contain the baronies corresponding to their scripted names! b_messina is in c_siracusa, b_syracusa is in c_modica, and b_trapani is in c_palermo. It's clear that the SWMH map of Sicily changed a lot between the setting of the county script names and the current distribution of holdings.

But the reason I wrote this up is that the MCN mod fails to account for these discrepancies. you have cultural names listed that match with the script names like c_siracusa and c_trapani instead of the intended names of these provinces. The research that went into finding other names for Syracusa and Trapani aren't wasted, because they can still be applied to the baronies with those names. However, those baronies are not even in the similarly-named counties.

Wrong encoding

All "Š, š, Ž, ž" in 0_titles_serbian.csv and 0_titles_karantanci.csv are wrong. They are right in croatian and bosnian..

Ck2 encoding

So I made an odd discovery that may interest some of you looking at more historical localization. While CK2's localization files use Windows-1252 encoding, which mainly is oriented towards Scandinavian and Romance languages, it looks like the game can work with any Windows-12xx encoding type. For example, Windows-1250 swaps some Scandinavian and Romance characters for characters used in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, and Serbo-Croation, which may be of interest to people like @!'ⰘⰑⰓⰂⰀⰕ' (if they're still interested in CK2 modding). Windows-1253 swaps even more characters out and replaces them with Greek characters. Windows-1251 is Cyrillic, 1255 is Hebrew, 1257 is Baltic, 1254 is Turkish, and 1256 is Arabic (though a fairly shitty one).

my idea:
maybe the game can load multiple files with all the landed titles inside, which have different encodings for a few grouped cultures. A slavic file, latin file etc.

Authenticity

(Before I say anything, apologies if I'm violating some rule or not using some format that I'm supposed to, I have no idea. I also apologize in advance if anything I say causes offense- that is not my intention.)

So, while playing with MCN for CK3, I've noticed some things that, to my knowledge, appear to be inaccurate. For example, I was playing as the de Normandie dynasty and ruling England, which is called Anglieterre with the mod. However, upon looking in an Anglo-Norman dictionary, I've found that it was actually referred to as "Engleterre". Similarly, the Khazars are called Kozars in the mod, when other versions of the name that are stated to be more likely can be found on Wikipedia. Another example is "Kyev", which is a spelling I have never encountered for the city's name; in Old East Slavic, it should be "Kyjevŭ"- similarly, the "-ŭ" ending is found everywhere in OES. I haven't conducted a thorough evaluation of the mod as of yet, but the number of historical names actually appears to be quite small, and your sources seem to be heavily concentrated on the eastern Balkans and England.

I highly encourage seeking out additional sources, as it will help to greatly flesh out your mod and enhance its authenticity. Even if you have reservations against using Wikipedia, it is still better than nothing, and historical names can be found there. Another useful tool is Wiktionary, which has an etymology section for nearly every word and name imaginable, and can trace the word's evolution through various languages, both contemporary and historical. Back in CK2, I started making my own submod for HIP (the "Cultural Enhancement Project") aimed at translating as many names as possible to the actual languages of the period, though I have since abandoned that. I have created one for CK3 called "Rightly Spoken", but similarly, I lack the motivation to finish it. Therefore, I approach you with this petition.

Another useful online dictionary is Glosbe, which has dictionaries for numerous historical languages as well as modern ones.

(CK3) New province names are not used throughout all mapmodes

Some mapmodes don't use the new province names.
For example, in the Duchy Titles mode, some are used (such as Westseaxe and Mierce) and others stay as the old names (like Essex and Kent).

In the Houses mode there are similar inconsistencies, such as the use of Wessex and Mercia instead of Westseaxe and Mierce.

CK2 HIP - Some Irish titles are not affected by this mod.

Hiya. First and foremost, thanks for making this mod. Second, I got this mod since vanilla HIP has some inconsistent Irish titles, like with only men having cultural titles while the women only has "Lady" or "Queen". Not to mention how, even if you are a Duke or Emperor, your title will always be "Kingdom of". No "empire of" and no "duchy of".

For example, I created the Empire of Britannia, it then automatically renamed itself to "Kingdom of Britain". Same thing with dukes, vassalized or not, having their lands called "Kingdom of" and not "Petty Kingdom" or any other equivalent.

Unfortunately, this mod apparently does not remedy that issue. Titles are still "Kingdom" or "Kingdom of" irregardless of my rank. This only affects the Irish too, since every other culture I've checked has their ranks and titles affected by this mod.

I've already tried:
-Creating a new save
-Reinstalling the mods AND only loading HIP and this mod.
-Reinstalling the game.

I'd appreciate some help on this. I'm using the final CK2 version + all the DLCs. I'm also using HIP's latest version (Frosty3) and this mod's latest GitHub release.

Add examples of names to the readme and Steam descriptions

Right now, the readme doesn't include any examples of what sort of names are included and how the experience differs from the base game. This makes it very difficult for a user to decide if the mod is something they want to install.

Please add some examples of how the game changes with this mod so the user can decide if adding "65 thousand names for over 450 languages, settings and time periods" is something they want.

Carantanians

With the next update HIP will change the code from karantanci to carantanian so its just a mass replacement but dont replace the "Karantanci" for b_kolonvar

Unsupported Diacritic

Hi!

I noticed that 'al-H̱ānīa' wasn't displayed properly in game:

Not sure what you can do to fix it as even the extended vanilla font looks odd with it:

I guess all you could do is replace all instances of 'H̱' with 'H'?

CTP Research/Integration

CTP is already compatible with MCN, This is a forum for improvements and title corrections.

Current Checklist:
-CTP's expanded font is free to use and can be integrated into MCN for more diacritics.
-CTP's ETB sheet integration should include which language it is for for cultures that had two language "tiers" during the time period of ck3.
-Adjectives need to be marked or the adj transformation rules for a language need to be pinned on the forums.

CI/CD integration

The scripts should be updated in order to be usable in a CI/CD pipeline for validating that the mods for each commit
Pull request merging should be mandated by a successful CI/CD build

CK3 Baronny of Maybole name bug

Baronny of Maybole in county of Carrick is named b_maybole in Norse. All other baronnies around have names, even if they lack Norse versions. I also tried giving this land to other cultures and looks like the problem exists for all cultures which lack their own name for Maybole.

Israel CoA problem

c_siracusa shouldn't be Syracuse

The county c_siracusa is actually Paterno in the SWMH localization (which is more geographically accurate). You have a list of cultural names for Syracuse under c_siracusa, but they should be moved to b_syracuse and maybe c_modica (the county that contains b_syracuse).

Issue with Sinews of War

With both mods-enabled the county of Brysis is its own county, where in Sinews of War it's part of Constantinople. This breaks Constantinople as it doesn't have enough food, also the county of Brysis is bugged with 0 population.

Game-agnostic data files

The idea is to create new data files that hold the title names, that don't have anything to do with how the game files look like.

A script would then take that data and generate game files based on it.
The result should look exactly the same as the files look right now, with the exception that no comments will be added (they will only appear in the source data files).

This will allow using the same source data files to generate the mod for both CK2 and CK3 (and possibily other games also). In addition, the mod can also be generated for vanilla CK2, not just for HIP/SWMH.

This is a low priority change for now, as we don't yet know how CK3's data files will look like, but it will have to be done sooner or later, in order to keep the mod alive for both games.

The details on how the names will be correctly mapped to a specific location are yet to be determined.
