It occurred to me that this sort of behavior is already supported. In case anyone comes across this in the future, the ModalWrapper component accepts an onClose prop and will run that function anytime an outside click is detected. Passing an empty function disables it from auto closing. This is what I ended up doing:
<ModalWrapper onClose={ disableOutsideClickAutoClose ? () => {} : () => Reoverlay.hideModal() } />
