The Project Week is a week-long hackathon of hands on activity in which medical image computing researchers create solutions using the open source image computing platform, 3D Slicer, and VTK, ITK, CMake, and CDash libraries as well as OHIF, Cornerstone, dcmjs, vtkjs, itkjs, DICOMweb, Girder and related web technologies. Participants work collaboratively on solutions that lie on the interfaces of the fields of computer science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and medicine. In contrast to conferences and workshops where the primary focus is to report results, the objective of the Project Week is to provide a venue for creators of medical image computing open-source software creators to collaboratively work.

Twice a year - January in Europe, and June at MIT. Ad-hoc meetings are added occasionally. The registration fee is approximately 350 (USD or Euro), and is used to cover coffee and food.

Weekly videoconferences for preparation begin 8-12 weeks before an event. Potential participants propose projects during these meetings, and collaboratively create a list of projects that are of mutual interest. The projects include platform work, algorithm development, and biomedical applications. Through the course of the meetings, each participant selects one or more project teams and develops goals for the week. The first day of the Project Week itself begins with a 2-hour in-person introduction to all projects and participants. The rest of the week consists of a mix of working sessions and breakout sessions on special topics, as decided by the participants during the preparatory meetings.

Project Weeks are open to all and publicly advertised. One-day participation is permitted for first-time attendees, but rest stay for the entire event. Email announcements are sent to the Project Week mailing list (for continuity) and posted on the Project Week forum.

The Project Week series was founded in 2005, along with the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NAMIC), which was chartered by the NIH to build a computational infrastructure for biomedical research. Today, Project Week has become one of the major events in the calendars of several NIH-funded Center efforts where they convene and collaborate. Participants in Project Week include NAC, NCIGT, QIICR, and CANARIE. • 2019 June 24-28: Project Week 31 - MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA. It recorded 78 attendees, who worked on 47 projects and attended 5 breakout sessions.
• 2019 January 28-February 1: Project Week 30 - Gran Canaria, Spain. It recorded 60 Registrants (from 13 countries) who worked on 33 projects.
• 2018 July 16-20: Project Week 29 - Robarts Research Institute, London, Ontario, Canada. It recorded 37 Registrants. This was a satellite event with a slight focus on new users and community expansion.
• 2018 June 25-29: Project Week 28 - Gran Canaria, Spain. It recorded 58 Registrants, who worked on 31 projects.
• 2018 January 8-12: Project Week 27 - MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA. It recorded 72 registered attendees, who worked on 52 projects and attended 5 breakout sessions.
• 2017 July 17-21 : Project Week 26 - Robarts Research Institute, London, ON, Canada.
• 2017 June 26-30: Project Week 25 - Catanzaro Lido, Calabria, Italy. It recorded 51 registered attendees, who worked on 29 projects.
