ledger's Introduction

2020-08-31: Ledger had a great run, and now Hack Club HQ is running entirely on HCB, where we use Transparency Mode to make everything public. Check out our recent finances here.

Please help us improve our open finances by filing issues in this repository. Before HCB, we manually made our finances transparent in this repository using ledger. All of those transparent books are archived here.

Hack Club Finances

Hack Club is building a new kind of nonprofit with total transparency. A core part of this goal is being transparent in how we spend our money.

Until January 2018, we used Ledger CLI, an open source CLI accounting tool, to maintain our books. As we began to spend an increasingly large amount of time managing our books, we decided to hire an accounting firm to take over. Unfortunately, accountants don't use open source CLI tools.

Right now (as of 2018-06), we're swamped wrapping up the school year and are working to figure out a strategy for making our new books transparent. We're planning to dump P&L reports and balance sheets monthly in this repo at some point in the near future.

For the time being, you're welcome to check out our books up until 2018 in main.ledger. If you have Docker on your machine, you can run ./bin/bash to be dropped into a Docker container's shell with ledger installed. You can then run all sorts of neat reports, like ledger -f main.ledger bal.

Have at it!

ledger's Issues

Missing bank transactions from December

There was around $5k in transactions not logged in the ledger, as of PR #47 all transactions all logged but receipts are still missing. These need to be fixed in or before the march-2018 branch.

Add short descriptions to each transaction

In an effort to make our transactions more transparent, every transaction, if applicable, should have a short description of what it was for if not immediately apparent.

Example:

2016/11/06 Namecheap
    Expenses:Operating:Software $94.00
    Liabilities:Reimbursement:Zach Latta
    ; Receipt: 6b6c3212671a112ba68df759463e5ff2.pdf

becomes:

2016/11/06 Namecheap
    ; SSL certificate for *.hackclub.io
    Expenses:Operating:Software $94.00
    Liabilities:Reimbursement:Zach Latta
    ; Receipt: 6b6c3212671a112ba68df759463e5ff2.pdf

This will be facilitated with Payo.

Inconsistencies in entries

There isn't consistency in the way our numbers are entered right now. Some examples below on what we'll need to change:

  • $5 to $5.00
  • $1000000.00 to $1,000,000.00

Adopt a Code of Conduct

Will need to do extensive research on the options that exist.

We should adopt a Code of Conduct from an organization that deeply understands the issues our community members might face (has a diverse leadership itself).
