I get an error longer than my scroll back buffer, usinf faust2jack 2.20.2.
Hello!
Three, or four, details for Mac users willing to build externals for Max (8.5.7 for instance):
— https://faustide.grame.fr does not work for Apple ARM64 (Ventura 13.6.3).
— "faust2max6 -universal" does WORK for Apple ARM64 (Ventura 13.6.3).
— If you get the following error:
Could NOT find PkgConfig (missing: PKG_CONFIG_EXECUTABLE)
install "pkg-config" using macport for instance:
port install pkg-config
— "$MAXSDK" within the "faustpath" file should target the fully downloaded Max SDK 8.2 like this:
".../max-sdk/source/max-sdk-base/c74support"
Only header and lib files on the folder "c74support" are needed.
I have encountered a couple of times a situation where it would be handy to have a si.bus(0)
.
I've implemented it like so:
bus(0) = 0:!;
bus(2) = _,_; // avoids a lot of "bus(2)" labels in block diagrams
bus(n) = par(i, n, _);
Alternatively, it might be a better idea to allow par(i,0,expression)
, but I have no idea if there are any downsides to that.
I'd be more than happy to do a PR, once you decide what you want.
When the attack time is set high on the exponential ADSR envelope, the level saturates very quickly, both not giving the wanted slow increase and also creating a long time with nothing happening before going to the decay stage. I propose something like this as a fix or a separate function

This gives a linear ramp up, but any function could in principle be used. I can make a pull request if you want?
I vaguely remember discussing this with Julius but I can't find the conversation in my inbox.
I am used to seeing the function "(an.)amp_follower" being called "peak envelope."
On the other hand, amplitude tracking implemented as rectified and low-passed signals, RMS, or instantaneous amplitude are sometimes called "balancing function" (Dodge and Jerse) or "envelope detector" (Wikipedia).
Do you have any information on these naming conventions?
A different but related matter: if doing so wouldn't break any other piece of code, shouldn't the RMS functions be moved in the analyzers library?

I made an N dimensional tabulate.
The code is in quite rough shape at the moment, but it works.
It can do val
,lin
and cub
, with any number of parameters for the function to tabulate.
All the values are stored in one big table with the size being the product of the individual sizes.
Usage example:

While experimenting with this function, I found that the synthesized fundamental frequency is only correct at 440 Hz and shows increasing error with increasing frequency input.
I managed to manually tune it by adding the following transformation using some crude polynomial fitting, so it is approximately in tune from 440 Hz to 1320 Hz. It would be great if a more robust fix were possible.

I declared your compressors as being superseded by mine, I hope you don't see that as rude!
@rmichon I noticed you are not on the list of people "watching" this repo, so here's a ping.
I'm trying to use a large numbers of coefs (around 7000) as impulse response but faust won't let me compile it. It's not a bug but I wish there was no restrictions. The longer wav files mean more room reflections which is more realistic convolution. I did reduce the number of samples in my impulse response and it compiled fine but it didn't sound OK. it was 2 dimensional. So if I could embed a long wave file inside I would be so happy.
As I learn more about compressors, I'm finding things I should have done differently in the libraries.
For example, the smoothing should be done in the lin domain, not in the dB domain.
For the sake of argument, let's assume everyone agrees this sounds better in most cases (it does).
At the same time, for example master_me has it's presets written around the sound of the current implementation.
So even though it would sound better with the new implementation, the presets would have to be rewritten for that.
I could of course come up with a new name for the improved set of compressors and just add them to the pile, but that would get confusing for users and there'd be a lot of code duplication.
I could work around the code duplication by writing clever code, but that would make it harder to read and I think also slower to compile, which matters a lot when working on big algorithms.
And then in two months I find out I made another subjective mistake (spoiler alert: I did...) and I'd have to add yet another set of compressors.
The compressors are just an example.
How do we deal with this in the general case?
The cleanest solution I've come across so far is how Rust does it.
In the code, you (optionally) declare the version of the libraries you want to compile against. (simplifying here)
This allows the libraries to make breaking changes as needed, but downstream authors can upgrade if and when they want to.
Would this be a possible way forward for faust?
In Rust, if you don't give a version number, you get the latest. (simplifying again)
This works for Rust, since the users of the libraries know this, so those who don't specify a version are OK with breaking changes.
In our case, it would defeat the whole point, cause none of the current code has any version numbers.

Hello, it seems there's some bug in the RMS_compression_gain_mono
. On my system, when compiling for SuperCollider, it crashes the sound server. Here's some code (a multi band comp) that makes this happen:

Hi, Julius and all. Not an issue but just an idea to make the behaviour of si.smoo more consistent.
Instead of a fixed value for the pole, we could have:
smoo = si.smooth(1 - (44.1 / ma.SR));
The value above would preserve the current .999 coefficient for the default SR.

Hi, I was playing with the moogLadder filter and I noticed a strange behaviour. Even if the resonance is high (near 25), if the cutoff frequency is high as well (around 10000Hz) the resonance completely disappears. Furthermore, it seems that the maximum cutoff frequency is indeed around 12000Hz, and not the sampling frequency as it shold be. I tried to get to the source code but I wasn's able to. However, I looked in the documentation and I saw that it is essentially Will Pirkle's implementation, so I re-implemented it and and found out that it has several issues that render it essentially unstable at high cutoff frequencies. The first issue is that, to compute the memory state necessary for the zdf prediction step, Pirkle uses the warped cutoff frequency g, where it should have used g/(1 + g). The second issue is that the memories used for the feedback updating are taken as the memories s of the one pole filters, while they should be (1 - g/(1 + g))*s instead. I implemented such corrections and the resulting filter is very stable. If you want I could provide a MatLab or C++ code.

I have an application that requires me to use the RBJ filter set, which is available in the library maxmsp.lib
.
A I have observed, this library seems a bit dated, it's not in stdfaust.lib
, but also it's licensed as ordinary LGPL without exception.
Currently, I wish to include this in a BSD-licensed project, preferably without submitting the whole program to constraints of LGPL.
The option is to reimplement this myself, but it's a shame to remake a library of such common, documented, easily implemented filters.
Would it be possible to revise the license of RBJ filters?
I would like to ask original authors, however they are not mentioned in the file source, and git history does not go far enough to know this information.

I believe that, in C/C++ and perhaps all other languages, 0 is false and any non-zero is true.
ba.if(.5, 1, 0); returns 0. I suggest rewriting ba.if as:
if(cond,then,else) = ceil(cond),else,then:select2; .
Also, I find the comments in the code deceiving as it can be used to avoid NANs at run-time, as in the case of:
division(x1, x2) = ba.if(x2 == 0, 0, x1/x2); .

The DX7 library is incomplete, so I think we should track it as an issue. For example LFOs are not implemented. Someone could consult how Dexed does it here which is nearly the same as Google's music-synthesizer-for-android. However, I can't confirm that the music-synthesizer-for-android is 100% correct for DX7.

I would love to see some links going from library pages (e.g. https://faustlibraries.grame.fr/libs/oscillators/) to their corresponding code (e.g. https://github.com/grame-cncm/faustlibraries/blob/master/oscillators.lib).
I often find what I'd like to use in the docs, and then would like to see the source to see how they are implemented to guess their efficiency.
Also I often then try to find a link to https://github.com/grame-cncm/faustlibraries from the faustlibraries docs site but I've not been able to find one on the homepage or any of the subpages. I usually end up typing "faustlibraries github" into google. Perhaps I've missed it, but if there isn't one it'd be great to have one added to https://faustlibraries.grame.fr/. Thanks.
As proposed by @sletz over at #44 and in the slack channel, I'd like to suggest adding functions for edge detection to the signal library.
my proposal would be this naming scheme:
strictRising(x) = x > x'; // 1 for strictly rising, 0 otherwise
strictFalling(x) = x < x'; // 1 for strictly falling, 0 otherwise
changed(x) = x != x'; // 1 if signal changes, 0 otherwise
falling(x) = x <= x'; // 1 for falling or unchanged, 0 otherwise
rising(x) = x >= x'; // 1 for rising or unchanged, 0 otherwise
unchanged(x) = x == x'; // 1 for unchanged, 0 otherwise
I understand that @sletz would like to have edge or front in the names, however, I do not see the need for "edge" (the change can be infinitesimally small for the functions to trigger)...
