Looks like I was wrong, VS Code already provides an API for hooking into file rename events: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/1fd7ee15d3a2c50547228b08cefc7c13a5a739d2/src/vs/vscode.d.ts#L10131

VS Code does this natively for TypeScript and JavaScript since the May 2018 update. It would be great if this extension could support the same flow.
I looked for a way to hook into this in an extension but it doesn't look like this is possible yet. I opened an issue on the VS Code repo to discuss this: microsoft/vscode#107500
