Installation

AnkiWeb

The easiest way to install Speed Focus Mode is through AnkiWeb.

Manual installation

Please click on the entry corresponding to your Anki version:

Anki 2.1

Make sure you have the latest version of Anki 2.1 installed. Earlier releases (e.g. found in various Linux distros) do not support .ankiaddon packages.
Download the latest .ankiaddon package from the releases tab (you might need to click on Assets below the description to reveal the download links)
From Anki's main window, head to Tools → Add-ons
Drag-and-drop the .ankiaddon package onto the add-ons list
Restart Anki

Anki 2.0

Go to Tools → Add-ons → Open add-ons folder
Find and delete the Speed Focus Mode.py file if it already exists.
See if you can find a speed_focus_mode folder. If so:
1. If the folder contains a meta.json file, copy the file to a safe location. This will allow you to preserve your current settings.
2. Proceed to delete the speed_focus_mode folder
Download and extract the latest Anki 2.0 add-on release from the releases tab (you might need to click on Assets below the description to reveal the download links)
Move the extracted Speed Focus Mode.py and speed_focus_mode into the add-ons folder
Optional: Place the meta.json file back into the directory if you created a copy beforehand.
Restart Anki

"Speed Focus Mode" in the form of a life bar.

Thanks for the “Speed Focus Mode” and would like to propose one idea for improvement.

My idea is to make this add-on in the form of a life bar and place it at the bottom of the window..
In my opinion, a graphical representation of how time is running out will make the learning process even more productive.

It is desirable that this add-on does not conflict with Life Drain.
By the way, I suggested this developer to take up this idea, here, he advised me to contact you.

I just want to know if there's any way to have like 4-5 one-second audio clips for the alert noise that could somehow be looped or randomized so that it's not the same DING every time, i'm going crazy. i'm hearing it in my dreams.

Problem case

I like to use the Anki Speed Focus Mode Add-on so that I don't spend too long on any card that I don't know. I have it set to about 10-15 seconds. I like to leave Anki on the background sometimes while I'm watching TV or doing other things on my laptop.

However, Speed Focus Mode is sometimes VERY loud despite the volume of almost everything else on my laptop being very low, so it is very distracting if I want to keep the volume on AND use Speed Focus Mode.

Solution

I would love to have a function or option to control the volume of the buzzer sound of Speed Focus Mode,

You can do this by using a sliding scale, or by simply having users type in a number (out of 100) for volume level, on the same screen where the settings for Speed Focus Mode are, or within the the Add-on Config.

Concisely describe alternatives you've considered (if any)

Perhaps you can provide users a variety of sound bites that they can choose from, with some sounds more loud and obnoxious than others.

"Need More Time" button not compatible with Life Drain Addon

Problem description

I didn't know if this is a good place to report this but I wanted to let you know that the "need More time" feature is incompatible with the Life Drain Addon. I love the new option tho! Thanks for this addon!

[Speed Focus Mode] Feature request: changing default answer.

It's already made here by jaksz. The add-ons are so similar. They should add some value to each other.

To make it work with your addon, I've just imported time at line 21 (import time), then added a couple of lines to clear_again_timeout() (the original ones):

and then added this function to the body (it's original too, but I made it use your values):

I found it here, it has MIT license. Hasn't updated for ≈ 2 years. Just don't want to make it again, if your addon gets some updates. It seems cool answering cards just by one button.

By the way, obviously, it doesn't use «4» (very easy) button, but it's simple enough to add it (for example, if your answer time is half autoAlert:

Forgot to mention that it's needed to add Reviewer._defaultEase = myDefaultEase to the hooks in the bottom.

Answer time doesn't stop when entering card Edit mode

Problem description

While entering card Edit mode during Review, the card's answer time keeps going, causing the Review mode to continue in the background.

I wish the answer time would stop while card is in Edit mode, and resume after Edit mode is closed.
Here are the settings I'm using:

Potential incompatibility with Clickable Tags

Problem description

Two errors:

NoneType error for clickable tags--had this problem for a while but always ignored
error message when closing Anki that required me to force quit--started recently, unfortunately I am not sure what I changed.

I had error #1 for a while but #2 error was recent. I disabled each add-on one by one and disabling the Speed Focus Mode add-on removed both errors. Also by re-activating the add-on both errors came back.

I had this error both with Anki 2.1.22 and now with the updated Anki 2.1.25

minimum time per card feature request

I really would like to be able to have a timer that requires me to spend a minimum amount of time on each card. Like for example the answer buttons are greyed out for maybe 10 seconds. After 10 seconds the user can select an answer button. This would help people that feel like they're rushing through their cards and not spending enough time on them.

[Speed Focus Mode] "Automatically rate again" value exceeded by program

I am using Anki 2.1

Automatically rate 'again' after 10 seconds ignored. Program counts to 20 and then shows next card. I tried changing the setting to different seconds and the program does not use the inputted value and instead uses some other value.

2.1 Bring Anki window to the front when alert sounds/appears

In Anki 2.0, when the note and alert played the anki window would pop up in front of anything else you had open (for example), in Anki 2.1 this does not seem to be working.. if you click on the the alert message anki comes up to the front but this does not happen automatically

Suggestion: switch to "auto-good" in due cards option

Problem case

What I noticed is that sometimes when I read my reviews/due cards (use both auto reveal and auto fail) I want to spend some time reading the card's extra but not too much and occasionally I spend "too much" time doing this and it auto fails so I have to cntl z and do it again. The auto fail though is HUGE time-life saver in learning cards where I don't want to spend all the time in one review and I see it again.

But in due/review cards I think it would be awesome an auto-good function. I fount another addon (anking's video, not sure if I should say other addons here) which does the same but has auto-good and not auto-again.

I fount myself switching to one of the addons for the reviews (auto-good) and then switch to the other for learning/new (auto-fail)

If you could integrate them to yours, maybe just add an optional config option to "switch to auto-good in due cards", it would be very awesome!

Option to selectively turn off timers for specific note types

I use speed focus mode to help get through my reviews efficiently however, when a full cloze overlapper note comes up, I do not have time to complete the note with speed focus mode enabled.

When I use anki 2.1.19 Speed focus functions like it's supposed in anki 2.1.22 when I start reviewing cards the first couple cards the alert doesn't play. After that all subsequent cards there is an audio delay(ex. if the alert is set to play after 3 seconds it plays after 5)

What is the problem/feature you would like to see fixed/implemented?

It would be great to have a hotkey we can hit to say 'give me more time'.

Sometimes I get a word that I am pretty sure I will remember if I just get a couple more seconds to think about it, and in those moments it would be nice to delay the answer reveal. Something like tapping ` (because it's next to the answer hotkeys) adding 2 seconds to whatever the currently active timer is would be ideal.

Different options groups being set with default options group speed focus setting

Problem description

Pretty simple issue- it seems that when I have a default setting to speed focus mode, it overrides any other options group setting for speed focus. For example, for my Zanki deck I have speed focus enabled; for a deck I want to go slower on, I just have all the numbers entered as 9999 under the "general" tab, yet the alert is still played and the card is automatically flipped in this deck like it would be in Zanki under the default options group.

Audio Not Playing

Hi,

I'm using Anki 2.1 on Windows 10 64-bit with this add-on. I get a message in the bottom left when it is supposed to play the audio file, but the audio file doesn't play. I haven't messed with anything, and I found the folder with the audio file, just to make sure it's there, and it is. alert.mp3 is in AppData\Roaming\Anki2\addons21\Speedfocus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Suggestion / feature request: button to start the speed focus mode

It would be extremely cool (and useful) to have a button in the reviewer that starts/quit the speed focus mode, maybe near sync or stats

Show answer timer option not being respected in latest Beta

Error when clicking on "Browse" in Anki with Speed Focus Beta enabled

Problem description

I am not sure what exactly the effect of this error is, but every time I click on Browse, I get notification for an error. It suggests I disable all addons and toggle each one until the error appears to identify the problematic addon. I identified the Speed Focus beta addon to be the issue. I am currently running Anki 2.1.54 qt6 on Windows 11.

Also, thank you so much for this addon. It has singlehandedly been the most helpful thing to improve my performance.

I haven't noticed a change in the behavior of the add on itself during reviewing, however when I open up the browser a pop up blocks the screen informing me of an unexpected argument.

optionally alarm on backside too

Problem case

I'm learning multiple choice questions where i've created a javasccript clickable True/False visual support that changes color according to whether the question was answered correctly. However to accomplish this i can only use the bachside of the card, because otherwise the information which answer was clicked would get lost during flipping.

The frontside only contains the question, not the possibel answers. Therefore the timer is ignoring me, because it thinks that i've already answerd the question.

Additionally, I think that spending too much time on the backside of a card (which might contain all the explanations and examples) might be detrimental in other use cases too.

Solution

I would suggest an option that makes the timer ignore which side you are on. The card is only "finished" when it is rated as again/bad/good etc.

Switch to a less harsh sound file

The current alert is a bit loud and overdramatic. Something friendlier could be more appealing, especially as the alert is meant as a nudge.

While using this add-on, I regularly run into the trouble of having pressed space around the same time as the auto-reveal/auto-fail. If this happens right before auto-reveal/auto-fail, there is no problem, but when this happens immediately after auto-reveal/auto-fail, my button press is counted for the answer side of the card or the next card. This leads to either the card being answered as "good" or revealing the answer on the next card.

Its possible to change the timer setting for new cards?

It will be pretty good if for newer cards we can change the value of the timer, something like a configuration bellow the current one with the same parameters, but its used only on newer cards

Please also add this option for your plugin:
Automatically rate as "good" and showing the next card. That's what really makes it all automatic.
Actually giving user the option to choose if the automatic rate would be "good" or "again" after a certain time.

Set timeout intelligently based on question length

I have a sugggestion: It would be absolutely AWESOME to add an option like "add x seconds per word" (add answer time per word on the question card). My deck consists of short words, but also of longer phrases and complete sentences. And I guess since "sentence mining" is a fix term in the language learner community, many other learners also have such a mixed deck. With such an option, many people could use this Anki addon without having to deactivate it each time a longer phrase comes along (and therefore not really being able to use it at all). Anyways, keep uop the good work!

Wait for audio playback to finish before triggering events

On the anki mobile version, there is a setting that allows you to auto advance cards. It is very similar to the speed focus app but it does have one additional feature: wait until audio is finished before moving to the next card. Is there any way that this feature could come to speed focus? On the PC, I use awesomeTTS and with speed focus, it flips to the next card before the audio has finished.

Getting an Error when I open "browse" section.

Hi, I installed Version 0.4.0-beta.1 however, the timer isnt working and it isnt reveling the right answer choice after the time i set has passed. Any help on how to get this working?

Ankimobile

Regarding AnkiMobile there's an alternate option called Autoadvance but this feature don't have an option to alert you with sound, can this be added through someline in note type ?

Interference with AnkiConnect

Problem description

When using Yomichan with AnkiConnect, pressing view added note in the Yomichan extension opens the browser but does not browse to the card in question with the beta speed focus mode on github. The old version on AnkiWeb works fine.

Having a specific review schedule, I try to limit the amount of time that I spend with each card. The issue is that "automatically rate again..." is relative to "show answer..."; additionally, with the "skip answer" ticked, "automatically rate again..." stops after the press of "show answer."

'More time' button doesn't actually pause the timer (when clicked before reveal answer)

The issue is as the title goes:
when I press 'More time' button BEFORE reveal answer, the timer turns into 'Stopped' but anyway goes on and reveals the answer.

The timer itself disappears, instead we see 'Stopped', but after the predefined timer is up, the answer shows in spite of it was 'stopped'.

If I press this button again AFTER reveal answer, then the pause is gripped firmly, it doesn't resume the countdown and no auto rating is activated until manual action from a user.

Thank you very much for the updated addon! It's really handy + new option for the auto Good mode... Just the it ))

[Speed Focus Mode] Not working

Which add-on is affected?

Speed Focus Mode (auto-alert, auto-reveal, auto-fail) (1046608507) is not working at all, not sure why. I have other add-ons like Progress Bar or the Puppy Reinforcement. Today I tried with speed focus but nothing happen.
I already tried changing the seconds or changing the deck of my cards

A possible use case would be large images which are loaded lazily on Anki 2.1 (e.g. image occlusion cards + complex SVGs).

Bug: Unable to pull up card from history

Issue:
When clicking on a card from the 'history' box found within the 'add' window the following error pasted below occurs after the browser window opens and Anki fails to open the card that was selected from the 'history' drop down box.

Note: Disabling this add-on negates the issue and using the more stable official build off AnkiWeb as opposed to this beta version on Github does not produce this error.
