template-k3s's Introduction

A K3S template on Gitpod

This is a k3s template configured for ephemeral Kubernetes development environments on Gitpod.

Next Steps

Click the button below to start a new development environment:

Open in Gitpod

Get Started With Your Own Project

A new project

Click the above "Open in Gitpod" button to start a new workspace. Once you're ready to push your first code changes, Gitpod will guide you to fork this project so you own it.

An existing project

To get started with k3s on Gitpod, copy the .gitpod.yml and the .gitpod folder to your own project. To learn more, please see the Getting Started documentation.

Notes & caveats

Here's a diagram of the interactions that also shows how the various components interact with each other.

Usage

At start, the workspace will start a VM in your gitpod workspace and automatically install k3s on it. Your local environment will be automatically configured to use that via the kubectl

Connecting via kubectl

When you open your workspace terminal, the kubectl is already configured for you via the ~/.kube/config file.

Kubectl from my local terminal

Connecting via SSH

You can connect to the VM via ssh at any moment. The ssh daemon is exposed on 127.0.0.1 for the workspace on port 2222.

  • username: root
  • password: root
ssh -p 2222 [email protected]

You can use the .gitpod/ssh.sh and .gitpod/scp.sh scripts if you want to avoid the extra steps.

template-k3s's Issues

Install helm in the gitpod container

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

As a devops engineer I would like to be able to launch the template-k3s gitpod and install helm charts into the k3s kubernetes installation.

Describe the behaviour you'd like

After the git pod first boots up I would like to be able to find helm in the path and be able to use it to interact with the running k3s instance.

Describe alternatives you've considered

use usermodelinux insted of qemu

Describe alternatives you've considered

Additional context

usermodelinux is a linux kernel which can run in userspace and needn't any bytecode translatings so k8s can run in it faster than in qemu

Gitpod kernel dependencies not available

Bug description

The linux-image-$(uname -r) (linux-image-5.13.0-1007-gcp) dependency in the .gitpod.yml is no longer available

$ sudo apt install linux-image-$(uname -r)
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package linux-image-5.13.0-1007-gcp
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-image-5.13.0-1007-gcp'

This causes the rest of the preparation steps to fail

Steps to reproduce

Load up template. Tried is a couple of workspaces, including https://turquoise-bat-kelqgteg.ws-eu25.gitpod.io/
