release-radar's Introduction

GitHub Release Radar

Submit your release for consideration

This repo is for you to submit your project to be considered for the GitHub Release Radar. This showcase was published on the GitHub blog until January 2024. From February 2024, the Release Radars are published on DEV.

The GitHub Release Radar is a post written each month to showcase community projects that have shipped major version releases. A post is usually shipped on the first Friday of the month, showcasing community projects from the previous month. We feature everything from the biggest open source projects to quirky weekend hobbies.

We sometimes select a few projects from the blog post to featured in a Release Radar video. You can watch the video series on YouTube.

If you're a maintainer or a contributor of an open source project, and you have a major version release (especially v1.0 releases!) that shipped, we'd love to hear from you. You could be featured in the blog, video, and on social media posts.

We can't promise we can feature all projects, but we would love to review your project. Check out the FAQs for more information on when to submit your project. Due to the nature of the Release Radar, and the number of requests, we only feature major version releases.

Fill out this issue to be considered. Make sure we haven't already shipped the blog post for that month. Ie. the November Release Radar will feature projects shipped in November and will be published the first week (or close as possible to the first week) of December.

If you have questions, check out the FAQs, or get in touch.

[RR Request]: Firezone WireGuard VPN Server v0.2.0

Open Source Project name

Firezone

What is your project?

Firezone is an open-source VPN server and egress firewall for Linux that makes it simple to manage secure remote access to your company’s private networks. Built on modern technologies, including the new blazing fast WireGuard tunneling protocol, Firezone is lightweight and easy to set up while being up to 3-4x faster than alternative solutions like OpenVPN and IPsec.

Version

0.2.0

Date

December 27, 2021

Description of changes

Our current goal is adding features on top of WireGuard to let you easily manage your team’s remote access. Eventually, we’d like the product to be ready for companies both small and large to manage their entire workforce’s access to private networks and internal services. In this update we did that by:

  • Multiple Users: Users are now first-class entities in Firezone. Devices now belong to users, and administrators can create users that authenticate to the Firezone web UI with email/password auth.
  • Require Web Authentication for VPN: Administrators can optionally require VPN users to sign in periodically to the Firezone web UI to keep their VPN session active.
  • Device Defaults: Device defaults like AllowedIPs, DNS, and VPN endpoint are now configurable. Devices can be configured to override these on a per-device basis as needed.
  • More Ways to Share Device Configs: New shareable link and download config buttons allow an Administrator to more easily share device configs to VPN users.
  • Connectivity Checks: New Diagnostics panel shows periodic connectivity checks to the Internet to ensure your Firezone instance is reachable by VPN users.

Since Zoom, WebEx, and other video calling platforms tend to have fewer features for Linux users, this project adds webcam video effects on Linux using minimal computer resources. Firefly Luciferin PC software gives you more control over all the features

settings_screen

There are a lot of light effects and a music mode:

Firefly Luciferin PC software is a very optimized software and it has nearly no impact on your system performance, it's written in Java but thanks to JNA it has access to the OS API that uses GPU hardware acceleration.

This is the simple circuit to create the hardware needed for Luciferin.
Basically you need an Arduino (ESP8266 or ESP32), a LED strip, some resistors and capacitors and a logic level converter.

ambilight_bb

for people who are not able to create a circuit, I released a Gerber file, the gerber file is a file that you can "print" using your favourite PCB Fabrication Manufacturer. In this way you don't need to do all the traces in the circuit.

the PC software, the firmware and the Gerber files for the PCBs are all open source on the github repo.
there is even a complete wiki to getting started here:

Firefly Luciferin PC software can run on Windows and Linux, macOS version is coming when it's ready.

[Release Radar Request] soketi - Just another simple, fast, and resilient open-source WebSockets server. 📣

Open Source Project name

soketi

What is your project?

Just another simple, fast, and resilient open-source WebSockets server. 📣

soketi implements the Pusher Protocol v7 (and soon, more!) so that any Pusher-maintained client can connect to it, bringing a just-change-the-pusher-client-credentials experience for the already-built frontend apps.

Version

0.17.0

Date

November 27, 2021

Description of changes

  • Dropped Node.js 14.x build for Docker (there was no reason for 14.x if it ran in 16.x which is LTS)
  • @stayallive pointed out in #124 that exposing the /metrics and /usage endpoints to 6001 (which is public) was a bad idea in terms of security. Starting with this version, the server will run the metrics to a different port (9601) which may not be exposed to the internet. This way, you can run the Prometheus Scrape service within your server or in your private network.

Notable milestone achieved before this update: AWS Lambda invocations for Webhooks (soketi/soketi#147)
