For some reason, vanity dictates that ebooks distributed on torrents require the first few pages to depict someone's dog or even uglier girlfriend. Enough of this, I say!

This will require a wizard during the upload process since it is not always possible to determine where the book actually begins.

This is also dependent on file formats and available open-source tools.

..and a nice way to visually navigate them

Currently we only import and export BibTeX files.
Enhance this to bundle actual ebooks with BibTeX files in a nice packages.

..while creating subject categories based on the names of the directories, or merging into a collection. This would be extremely useful for people with already-established ebook collections.

Saves at lot of manual work. Will require s wizard since the front cover is not always the first page in an ebook.

Use Apache Solr.
