gendermagrecordersassistant's Introduction

What is the GenderMag Recorder's Assistant?

The GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant is a Chrome Extension tool that you can use from Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to identify gender-inclusiveness issues in software. GenderMag is a process you can use to find gender biases in user-facing software that you are designing/building. The GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant semi-automates using this process. It is easy to use and can be used by software engineers to management to usability experts.

If you want to help make software gender-inclusive, one way is to contribute to the GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant. We welcome everyone with any background to contribute to making the world of software more gender inclusive. There are many different ways to contribute, please see this section on Contributing.

How does GenderMag make software more inclusive?

Gender Mag Recorders Assistant walks people through how to analyze their website based on different personas. These personas are created by considering 5 cognitive style facets. Each of these facets is a spectrum, and every person can have tendencies to fall in a certain part of the spectrum based on their specific personality and the use case.

The five facets are...

image

GenderMag uses 3 different personalities to help analyze software that fall onto different parts of each spectrum.

image

While each individual can be at different points on these spectrums, facets statistically cluster around genders; for example, Abi's facet values are those frequently seen in women. As a result, analyzing different personas can be a way to help understand how a range of diverse users can use a program differently and have different needs and wants when using a program. Considering this whole range can thus lead to more gender-inclusive (and overall inclusive) software.

GenderMag Recorders Assistant is a semi-automated tool that helps users walk through their software in the mindset of each of the personas and consider how they would each use the software. As a result, creators can find areas where their software only caters to part of the spectrum on each of the five cognitive style facets and address these issues to make the software more inclusive.

Examples of How to Cater to People with a Range of Cognitive Facets

Example 1 - Motivations:

Explaining the pros and cons of using different features can help users regardless of where they fall on the spectrum of motivations. Users who are solely interested in completing a task can quickly discern the relevant features to use and users with a tech interest can quickly determine which features interest them.

Example 2 - Attitude Toward Risk:

A message pop up asking the user if they are sure they wish to delete a file before doing so to make sure they do not accidentally lose data can prevent risk takers from accidentally deleting files. A guide explaining what happens when a user switches to the new version of a software could help a risk-averse person decide if they wish to make the change.

Example 3 - Learning Style:

Guides showing how to complete relevant tasks on the website such as a set of written instructions, an FAQs page, or a video walkthrough can help people who are process-oriented learners. In order to also appeal to tinkerers, these guides can be optional. For example, there could be a popup the first time a user logins asking if they would like to go through the guides or proceed straight to the homepage.

How to Run a GenderMag Session Using the Tool

A GenderMag session is simply an instance of using the GenderMag method. If you have downloaded and installed the tool and want to run it, make sure the extension is enabled, navigate to the page you wish to perform GenderMag on and click the GenderMag button at the bottom of the screen.

See the video from GenderMag.org for examples and/or read the guide below.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to run the Recorder Assistant tool:

  1. After you have installed the GenderMag recorder's assistance extension a maroon button will appear on the bottom middle of the screen. Click it to open the tool.

  2. After clicking on the maroon button, text explaining what GenderMag is will appear on the screen. Click on "Start GenderMag" to get started.

  3. Enter the name of your team and click submit.

  4. Select the persona that you want to use for this session. Currently, you can select from these personas: Abi, Tim, Pat, or a custom persona of your creation.

After you have selected the persona, the description of the selected persona you selected will appear to the right.

If you selected a custom persona, navigate to http://gendermag.org/custom_persona.php and design your custom persona using an online or PDF form. Your custom persona's facets and characteristics will be listed on these forms instead of in the GenderMag extension.

If you want to change the persona or team name, click edit on top of the tool.

  5. Provide the scenario that your persona will be performing in the text box and click submit.

  6. Enter a subgoal and click 'enter subgoal'.

  7. Answer Yes, No, or Maybe to describe if the persona would have formed this subgoal as a step to their overall goal. In the text box, explain why, why not, or why maybe. On the right of that text box, select all the checkboxes corresponding to the facets that were used to answer the previous question. Then click save and continue.

  8. Enter an action that pertains to this subgoal.

  9. Click on the 'click here' button to take a screen capture of ideal action. Move the rectangular box around your box to the action that you want to focus on and hit the left click. This will create a screen capture of ideal action. If you want to add more info to the capture click on the draw on the image button and annotate the image. If the image looks okay, click 'save and continue'.

  10. Answer: Yes, No, or Maybe for, will the persona know what to do at this step, and in the text box under it explain why, why not, or why maybe? On the right of that textbox select all the checkboxes against the facets that were used to answer the previous question.

  11. Perform the action you indicated previously in step 9 and click on the 'click here' link to continue.

  12. Answer: Yes, No, or Maybe for, if the persona did the right thing will she know that they did the right thing, and is making progress towards the goal and in the textbox under it explain why, why not, or why maybe? On the right of that textbox select all the checkboxes against the facets that were used to answer the previous question. Click 'save and continue' when ready.

  13. If your persona needs another action to complete the current subgoal, enter the new action in the top text box and click 'add another action'. Return to (9) and complete all subsequent steps.

  14. If the subgoal is complete, but another subgoal is needed to complete the scenario, enter the subgoal in the bottom text box and click 'create new subgoal'. Return to (7) and complete all subsequent steps.

  15. If the scenario has been completed, click 'download and end my GenderMag session'. This will take you to another page and download a zip file with your session's information.

  16. If the zip file was not downloaded click Re-Download zip file. Otherwise, check the box next to the disclaimer saying that the file was downloaded and hit "Quit GenderMag". This will reload the page and close the tool.

See the video at http://gendermag.org for examples of what running the tool looks like.

How to Disable GenderMag:

To turn off the GenderMag extension navigate back to “Extensions” and uncheck the “Enable” box and uncheck “Developer Mode”.

FAQ’s:

Note: If you have questions you would like us to answer, please let us know by filing an issue asking the question!

  1. How to install GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant (chrome extension):

Instructions here

  1. Technologies used in the project:

    HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

  2. Why should GenderMag be used?

Gender biases within software indirectly discourage people of marginalized genders from engaging with technology. Software that isn't inclusive for all genders loses out on an enormous market of paying consumers and potential technological contributors. By addressing these gender biases, GenderMag helps improve software experiences for end-users of any genders. Visit http://gendermag.org/index.php for more information.

  3. When should GenderMag be used?

GenderMag should be used during the process of designing user interfaces. It can also be used to evaluate the inclusivity of existing software.

  4. Who should use the GenderMag Tool?

The GenderMag tool's primary audience is software practitioners and usability professionals (e.g., developers, managers, UX professionals).

  5. What is the output file created by the GenderMag Tool?

The output file has two forms. The 'old' format is optimized for graphing or using a computer to parse the information from your GenderMag session. The 'new' format is optimized for reading the results of the GM session. Both types are CSV files and contain all the answers submitted during the use of the tool.

  6. What do you mean by subgoal, scenario, action, and other terms used throughout GenderMag?

Scenario/Use Case: the hypothetical situation you are walking through and evaluating (e.g., Abi wants to find a science fiction book)

Subgoal: what the developer or designer hopes the user is thinking of doing next (e.g., see bookstore map)

Action: what the persona needs to do to meet a subgoal (e.g., click on "browse off") Visit http://gendermag.org/gendermag.php for more information.

  7. How can I contribute to this project?

Please see the contributing guidelines here.

  8. As a newcomer to the project, what problem should I start with?

If you navigate and click on the Issues tab, at the top of the screen, and filter by the "Good First Issue" any issue you see there would be a good place to start.

  9. I have an unanswered question or need to contact someone about the project.

Please open an issue, and we will get back to you ASAP.

gendermagrecordersassistant's Issues

Back button on post-action doesn't work

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Go through the session until after completing the action (where the window asks 'if abby did the right thing will she know she did the right thing?') then click the back button. The button doesn't do anything.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The button should take you back to the previous page
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?

Scrolling issue in subgoal UI

Operating System: Windows (all operating systems seemed to have this issue)

image
Finding the issue:
The image above shows how the instructional text is cut off. This occurs when a user types more than a few words in the subgoal "Why, why not or why maybe?" section.

A user would expect to see the instructional text while he/she is typing in the box.

By reducing the width of the text box, the div will not be forced to scroll sideways.

CSS clipping issue

On web sights, page elements with high priority clip through the Tool.

Eliminate Use of Popup

After the first action screenshot is taken, the GenderMag Tool resizes its window into a rectangular popup as shown. In this new form factor, the edit tree is not available to the user. Thus, he or she cannot edit their previous subgoals, actions, details etc. In addition, the extension appearing at the bottom of the page would still function fine and establish greater consistency, while still getting the same job done as the popup. The new rectangular popup form factor also hides a lot of information on the current page the user is visiting.

Feature to add: Move popup slides into more bottom-screen-running slides, like the rest of the program.

Fit for project: Improves workflow

Merits: Prevents confusion & getting lost
Issue12-1

Different Color Scheme?

Change the color scheme from the current light blue and burgundy to the blue (HEX:1e57c8) and orange (HEX: ed7d31) of the official GenderMag website so the themes match, because, as shown below, there is little between the two interfaces to signal that they're related to each other.

Inconsistent display of goal, subgoal, and action information

Operating Systems: All

In the two situations shown, the user cannot see the goal and subgoal they created. In the situation where a user forgets a previously entered goal, subgoal, or action, they cannot answer the question presented to them. A tree of goals, subgoals, and actions should be available to the user at all times during a GenderMag session.

Add text field for persona pronouns

  • Description (Example: feature to add exit button)
Add text field at beginning of session for user to input pronouns for the persona. Need one field for subject pronoun and possesive adjective.

  • Describe the feature to add (or improvement) (Example: there is no right way to exit from the application)
Persona pronouns are currently set for each persona (she/her for Abi, he/him for Tim, etc) but should instead be set by user

  • New feature fit for the project: how does your idea fit with the aim/scope of the project? (Example: feature gives the workflow)
allows user to further customize persona at the beginning of the session

  • Merits: what are the merits of the feature? (Example: prevent data loss)
Helps to avoid use of binary pronouns and indicating that personas are only one gender.

  • Screenshot, if you can show something similar or a sketch.
    See current

  • Any other information.

File Download is Required

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10

image

  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
As shown in the screenshot above, the zip file containing session information is downloaded automatically when the save and exit button is clicked. If a user is not satisfied with a session, they may not want to download a zip file. This may result in an annoyed user.

  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
A user would expect an "exit without download" button after clicking exit.

  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
By adding such a button below the Re-Download Zip File button, the user will understand that they can delete or save the session's information. This bug can also be fixed if there is a separate exit button apart from the save and exit button.

Add persons information to beginning of session

  • Description (Example: feature to add exit button)
Add persona information to persona select portion of session.

  • Describe the feature to add (or improvement) (Example: there is no right way to exit from the application)
Add persona information panel to the beginning of the session when the user is selecting their persona so that they can see the facets.

  • New feature fit for the project: how does your idea fit with the aim/scope of the project? (Example: feature gives the workflow)
Helps provide user with more information when setting up the session

  • Merits: what are the merits of the feature? (Example: prevent data loss)
Reduces need for user to check other sources for facet information

  • Screenshot, if you can show something similar or a sketch.

  • Any other information.

Fixed Targeter-Box Coloring

Make the screenshot targeting box with dynamic coloring.

Make the screenshot targeting box able to change colors to the opposite color of its background as it moves, so it can always have high contrast with that background.

Allows users to always see what they're highlighting as the action, no matter what color background they're operating on. Otherwise, the user could end up with situations similar to those pictured below, where the box is very hard to see, decreasing usability.

Permanent Button

Feature to make the tab at the bottom of the screen able to be hidden.

The red “GenderMag” button at the bottom of the screen used to open the GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant, is always at the bottom of the screen as long as the GenderMag extension is installed on chrome.

It should be fixed so that clicking on the GenderMag Recorder’s Assistant icon in the top right corner causes the GenderMag button to go away, and another click on the icon brings the button back to the bottom of the screen.

Improves usability of the extension.

Can't click on lower parts of page for screenshot

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
When going to take the screen capture, scroll down and try to take it by clicking on the lower parts of the webpage. This resulted in an error 'can't read property 'id' of null' and the screen capture was not taken.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The screen capture should be taken no matter where the user clicked on the page.
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
Pretty sure this issue is in overlayscreen.js as the error was coming from line 266

Facet pop ups are only for Abby

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Go through a session for any persona until after the screenshot when the 'which of 's facets did you use...' question appears. Click one of the facet links. The pop up always shows Abby's facet information even if she isn't the selected persona.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The information should reflect the selected persona's facets
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?

Image capture not working on Mac

After clicking "click here" for screen capture and clicking a part of the webpage to take a screen capture nothing happens. Running OS High Sierra.

Reloading on second subgoal action results in wrong input box

  • What Operating System?
    Windows
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Complete the process up to the second subgoal. Before entering the action name for the second subgoal, reload the page. This results in the slider opening to the subgoal name input instead of returning to the action name input. (see screenshots)
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The slider should open to the action name input
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?

Before reload:
beforereload
After reload:
afterreload

Add a message that shows the tree as editable.

The blue hyperlinked text on the left allows the user to edit the subgoal and action. However, some users may not recognize this as an editable tree.

Adding a message such as “Use the tree below to reference, edit, or change subgoal and action details” will help the user understand the purpose of the tree.

gendermag extension text is downloded on saving browser data

I had tried below steps:

  • I have gendermag extension installed in chrome
  • I visited a site having pdf browsing with normal data rendering (Two seperate division in a web page) and used gendermag normally
  • I downloaded that pdf and also saved page as html, I saw "Gendermag" extension details in pdf file (Included title, gendermag Method and link to gendermag.org)

Normally any extensions which is installed in chrome should not be reflected in data you save, they are always hidden. It is always regardless of if you are using any extension or not.

Be able to edit subgoal

Can't currently edit the subgoal and scenario after the entering the name of the first subgoal. The edit button disappears. This can hopefully be remedied by stopping the edit button from being removed and keeping whatever behavior it already has.

Facet pop-ups can spawn under elements of website pages

  • What Operating System?
    Windows

  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Start the tool up on a website that has an interactive toolbar at the top. Enter in information until the bullet list containing the five facets appears which is after picking the persona. Click one of the links for the five facets. A facet pop-up should appear in the top right.

  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
I would expect the facet pop-up to spawn above all of the elements on the website page. If not the user can accidentally click on an element of the website page when trying to move or close the pop-up.

  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
I tested the tool out on multiple websites. Some had more interactive elements and others didn't. It seemed to mainly happen underneath toolbars at the top of websites. I also tried it out without my ad-blocker on and in incognito mode. It spawned the pop-ups underneath certain elements in those scenarios also.

Word Spacing

Operating System: Windows

The top part of the extension usually lists the team name, persona, and scenario. These words are too squished together. Adding some spacing will help separate the words so the user finds it easier to read.

A better UI will have the same words with better spacing.

image
As shown in the image above. All of the text above the horizontal rule needs more padding.

Back Button

  • Description (Example: feature to add exit button)
Add back button to every step

  • Describe the feature to add (or improvement) (Example: there is no right way to exit from the application)
Add a back button to every step of the process (especially during subgoal stage in order to go back and edit scenario) so that the user can go back at any point.

  • New feature fit for the project: how does your idea fit with the aim/scope of the project? (Example: feature gives the workflow)
Allows user to backtrack if they make a wrong move

  • Merits: what are the merits of the feature? (Example: prevent data loss)
Reduces chance of user giving up right away

  • Screenshot, if you can show something similar or a sketch.
    Capture

  • Any other information.
This issue aligns with the GenderMag facet of Learning: by Process vs. by Tinkering because a tinkerer would want to backtrack in order to fix any mistakes.

Screenshot selection box is not re-sizable

Operating System: Windows 10

Description: The red box that is intended to emphasize the ideal action is fixed in size. This prevents the user from selecting an object on the screen that is different or larger in size. Ideally, it would be changed to act like the snipping tool (present in windows).

To reproduce this issue, enter preliminary information (e.g. team name, persona, etc.). Then enter a goal, subgoal, and an action. After clicking the screen capture button, the red highlight box will appear. This box is not resizable. Thus, only small portions of a website can be selected.

A user would expect to have a resizable selection box. In the current version, the user can only select small objects.

Back button on popup opens slider but doesn't close popup

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Complete subgoal 1 through the screen capture step. Click the back button on the popup window.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The back button should open the slider and close the popup window. Currently, it only opens the slider.
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
    closepopupissue

Tool doesn't work with background javascript/audio

  • What Operating System?
    MacOS Mojave
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Problem: After performing action and recording facets, clicking on "Save and Continue" button does not result in saving and continuing on with the session.
Start a new GenderMag session on any website. Choose any persona besides Abby. Follow through the instructions. After performing the action for the your subgoal, click on continue. Then record your facets and click on "Save and Continue" button. Button will not perform any actions.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The "Save and Continue" button should allow your facets to be saved. I should be allowed to enter in more actions/subgoals or exit out of program.
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
I noticed that the problem arises for non-Abby personas. In addition, you may have to go through several actions/subgoals before problem arises.

The instructions should be clear about which repository should be used to create a branch i.e. a cloned repository or a forked repository. In step three the phrase pop-up box should be removed.

The link to the video, in how to install, in Contributing.MD points to gendermag website.

  • What Operating System?
    Windows

  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Click on Contributing Guide link on README.md then follow the link here (See the video at http://gendermag.org for examples of running it.)

  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
The link should take the user directly to the video instead of the GenderMag website, this will save time and make it easier to navigate to the video.

  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
The orignal link in contributing guide should be replaced with this link (http://gendermag.org/GenderMag%20Demonstration.mp4).

Write a ReadMe on how to use the Tool

We already have instructions about how to download (in the ReadMe file) the Tool and there is a video on http://gendermag.org that kind of shows it in use.

BUT we have no instructions on how to run it. To create you might check the video mentioned above. Besides the video, there is a figure on http://gendermag.org that is called “How GenderMag Works” that might be helpful.

Reword "View full image"

After the screen capture, the text says " To see the full image select the view full image button." There is no view full image button. Text should be reworded or add the button.

Have to reload to add subgoal

  • What Operating System?
    Windows
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Finish subgoal 1 then at the end add another subgoal name. When slider reopens, the user is unable to click on the page.
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
When the slider opens, user should be able to click on page to enter subgoal information
  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
I think this is related to the clipping issue - the genderMagCanvasContainer is over the page and doesn't get removed when the slider reopens.

Info windows don't close and 'see more' button does nothing

  • What Operating System?
    Windows
  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
In the action questions after the screenshot, click one of the facets to see more information in a popup window. Click 'close' or 'see more' - nothing happens
  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
Would expect 'close' button to close the popup and expect 'see more' to display a longer paragraph of info

Team and Persona name not editable (after subgoal)

  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
After naming the subgoal for the first time, the user no longer has the option to change the name and persona type.

The user should always have the option to edit the team name, persona name, and any other important information.

By having an always accessible edit button, the user will always have the chance to change important information without having to quit and restart the GenderMag session.
As shown in the first screenshot, the user is still able to change the information. As soon as the user submits the subgoal name, he or she is no longer able to change the information at the top (screenshot #2). Even after returning to the subgoal naming step (rename subgoal) the user still cannot change the information (screenshot #3)

"Add another action" button does not provide enough information.

Provide more information along with the "Add another action" button.

Description: In the scenario shown in the first screenshot, the user is not given sufficient information before the screenshot function appears. When the user clicks the “Add another action” button shown in the first screenshot, his/her cursor immediate turns into the red box (shown in screenshot #2). There should be an intermediate step prompting the user to take a screenshot.

Perhaps add a tooltip explaining what the "Add another action button" is, or some other intermediate step.

Increases Usability

Unable to install tool as Chrome extension using provided instructions

  • What Operating System?
    Windows 10, using Chrome 74.0

  • What steps will reproduce the issue?
Following installation instructions through step f) results in being unable to find the folder with the manifest file necessary for Chrome to load the extension

  • What would you expect to be the outcome?
Expected to be able to find the folder for the tool where I downloaded the zipped file.

  • All these details will help people to fix any potential bugs?
Found that extracting the files and navigating to the extracted folder's child folder was the one that I wanted for installing the tool's extension on Chrome. I think that a step should be added to instruct the user to extract the contents of the zip file.
