@rodluger @dfm I've pushed two notebooks to this repo. In the first one I generate a secondary eclipse light curve of 55 Cancri e assuming the map has a localized high temperature hotspot. To simulate the light curve I use the functions from the planetplanet code which Rodrigo used to simulate mutual occultations in the Trappist system a few years ago. I just replaced the MIRI filters with the NIRCAM 4.44um filter. This filter is comparable to the Spitzer 4.5um filter which was used for past observations of 55 cancri e (see Demory et. al. 2016). I assume a fairly long exposure time and multiple observations of the eclipses.

In the second notebook I fit the simulated light curve with an l=12 sphixel model assuming we know the orbital parameters exactly. I'm able to recover the location of the hotspot if the emission from the spot accounts for a substantial fraction of the total emission from the planet.

Does this look sensible to you? I have no idea how realistic are these simulated JWST light curves.
