In order to avoid committing your API key into source code and git history, you can load it like
api_key = os.environ["FIXER_API_KEY"]
if you put it inside an .env file such as:
.env
FIXER_API_KEY=thisisasecretdontcommitit
on a linux shell you can load it during development with this command
export $(cat .env)
And then run your server as normal. It also helps when you turn it into a systemd service when deploying into production.
