I played around a bit with making the operator modal to be able to cancel between frames.. also removed the render single frame operator. I think it works pretty ok.

I have implemented some of your suggestions in the master branch.
This was mostly based on your code, although I did make some changes. Your given points 1, 2, and 5 have been addressed by your code.
Point 3 - it should be possible to render straight to a video, although I haven't figured it out yet.
Point 4 - I don't have this issue at all, which is why re-implemented the single frame operator that you removed in your code, as it is still very useful.
Point 6 - I haven't run into this issue yet, it might be that due to it failing midway through the render since internally the images are rendered only as big as they need to be to save on render times.
For now I'm closing this issue, although this will be used as a reference for improvements in the future.
