Thinking the proposed behaviour should work:

  • a single function can access variables by their tags
  • return a data.frame or a tibble by default
  • have a simplify argument to return a vector instead of a 1-column data.frame, defaulting to FALSE
  • this could be part of select() e.g. select(tags = c("date_onset", "date_reporting", "outcome", "epicasedef"))

Closed via select which will serve as a general accessor for all tagged variables:

Note that for now, regular variables and tagged variables are all handled together through .... We may need to revise this for a safer tags = ... argument, although the current implementation is more user-friendly, and potential weird behaviours are explained in the Details of the doc.
