I also tested partial derivatives and I get a somewhat similar problem

A similar "error" can be seen in the following:
x(2x+1)
The first x is interpreted as a function name, and thus, the expression cannot be evaluated.

The same issue exist in most programming languages, where syntax must be precise for correct interpretation.

This is intended.
x(...) must be interpreted as a function. The way a function is recognized is a ''variable' immediately followed by a bracket.
also spaces between f and brackets is not a function.
