There's a website uploading books published by Mir, which are loved by many.
Here are the links :
https://mirtitles.org/category/physics/
https://mirtitles.org/category/mathematics/
I am not sure about copyrights though, I've read somewhere that Mir publishers closed down but I think that doesn't entail the books becoming public domain.
If someone could check the copyrights then let him do it please! I think these books would be interesting for this repository.
I have seen some resources that are themselves lists of links to open books. Would there be some benefit in adding the lists rather than adding the links from the list to this list?
examples include:
https://aimath.org/textbooks/approved-textbooks/
https://www.doabooks.org/ csv of titles available here: http://www.doabooks.org/doab?func=csv
I just found out today that FPB is not listed under programming on the awesome list, but rather under BOOKS. I think it would be good to apply for that list, once we add more resources.
In the mean time, ownership should move to this repo's creator, rather than an organization. An org normally has multiple repos (like ruby), while we only have 1. Not saying EbookFoundation is not a great idea, but we can also transfer ownership back later on.
I find this project interesting, and was looking over the Mathematics section. I noticed a bad/changed/expired link.

Line 75 in e31c4f0
That is for: The Handbook of Essential Mathematics - John C. Sparks (PDF)
A search option does come up, and it is relatively easy to get to the book, but it is not clear on the best link to use for it:
I thought I could make an attempt at a quick fix, but it was not clear which URL would be preferred for the fix.
Just tried to get this book today and the link now 403s. There's a 2015 edition on the MIT OCW site for the course, and you can still get the 2017 version from the Internet Archive, but it'd be nice if we had an official (and even more recent?) version.
The Physical Geology entry could be updated: there current link is to 2015 version, but there is a newer version (2019) at https://opentextbc.ca/physicalgeology2ed/. It might be worth adding the new version as a new item.
I recently discovered that the Spanish National Research Council (or CSIC for short) has several books to download but I have doubts about how to include it in the lists so I want to raise this here before adding something.
To begin with, the site has its own system of categories, which are:
CSIC category | LCCO equivalent |
---|---|
Archaeology and Prehistory | [CC] Archaeology |
Arts and Architecture | [N] Visual arts or [NA] Architecture |
Earth Sciences | |
History and Historiography | [D] History (General) |
History of Science | |
Information and Library Sciences | |
Life Sciences | |
Linguistics and Philology | [P] Philology. Linguistics |
Literature and Literary Criticism | [PN] Literature (General) |
Philosophy and Religion | [B] Philosophy (General) or [BL1-50] Religion (General) |
Popular Science | |
Science and Technology | |
Social Sciences | [H] Social sciences (General) |
Besides that, the books are usually in one of these "collections" that can help to categorize them better:
Original name | Name in english | LCCO equivalent |
---|---|---|
BIHES (Bibliografías de Historia de España) | Bibliographies of Spanish History | [DP1-402] History of Spain |
Cancioneros musicales de poetas del Siglo de Oro | Musical songbooks of poets of the Golden Age | [DP161-272.4] History of Modern Spain, 1479/1516- or [M] Music |
Cuadernos de Trabajo de Flora Micológica Ibérica | Iberian Mycological Flora Workbooks | [QK] Botany |
Cuadernos de acuicultura | Aquaculture Notebooks | [SH1-691] Aquaculture. Fisheries. Angling |
Cuadernos rayuela: bibliografías sobre América Latina | Rayuela Notebooks: Bibliographies on Latin America | |
Estudios sobre la Ciencia | Science Studies | |
FOTCIENCIA | A word game that combines photography and science | [TR624-835] Applied photography, [ZA4650-4675] Information resources (General) > Pictures. Photographs or any other that corresponds to scientific photography |
Fauna ibérica | Iberian fauna | [QL] Zoology |
Monografies de l'Institut d'Investigació en Intel-ligencia Artificial | Monographies of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute | [Q300-390] Cybernetics |
Monumentos de la Música Española | Monuments of Spanish Music | [DP161-272.4] History of Modern Spain, 1479/1516- |
Publicaciones científicas y tecnológicas de la Fundación Observatorio Español de Acuicultura | Scientific and technological publications of the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory Foundation | [SH1-691] Aquaculture. Fisheries. Angling |
Ruizia. Monografías del Real Jardín Botánico | Ruizia. Monographs of the Royal Botanical Garden | [QK] Botany |
As you can see, there are categories and collections of which I am not sure which is their equivalent in the LCCO system classification so I would appreciate any help or correction on this.
Another question I have is about how I should add the books. Seeing the list of books in English would normally be something like this:
Although I think the most appropriate would be this way:
All the books are in pdf to download so the first link goes to the CSIC description page and the second is the pdf itself, what do you think? I see that this was also discussed in #10 but there does not seem to be a clear consensus on this.
Other particularities I have noticed are:
If someone wants to do tests I made a script to extract the data from those books and a dump in JSON with the generated information.
What about adding a "Free online courses" as in free-prgramming-books?
There are a lot of interesting video courses about science.
Does this mean there is nothing TODO?
As reported by official Hacktoberfest site
Maintainers of the repository can add the "hacktoberfest" topic to their repository if they wish to participate. Alternatively, an individual PR can be opted-in with a maintainer adding the "hacktoberfest-accepted" label to the PR.
Unlike programming books, science references have been around for decades, with some subjects rarely updating (math). I think the following should be included when submitting a link
I am not sure on the exact format. So far, it looks like @eshellman is formatting it as:
<title> <format> by <author>.
The programming repo does not form it into a sentence, and replaces "by" with " - ".
Any changes we decide here, I will put in my future PR that edits the contributing file.
