One thing many image viewers do by default is to have a dark-gray-vs-light-gray checkerboard background behind the image, which seems to be doable in CSS these days. (This may give bad readability on this particular example, but I'd attribute that more to transparent background being unsuitable for that particular kind of image.)

I've added the checkerboard as I think this is nice, this is only visible on hover though and can be disabled by adding a data-disable-checkerboard attribute to <body>.
