For reference, it may also be worth pointing out DGEngine which is a modern rewrite of the Diablo 1 game engine, also capable of running with game assets from Hellfire. The main advantage of DGEngine is that the game engine itself contains no Diablo 1 specific code, but is entirely data driven through JSON files. Whether this approach is powerful enough to replicate the behaviour of the entire Diablo 1 game engine is yet to be seen. An interesting approach none-the-less, and worth keeping an eye on.

Yes this project is aware of freeablo. The purpose however is much different. This may need to be made more prominent in the README.

Maybe one suggestion would be to quote this line closer to the top.
The goal of Devilution itself is to recreate the original source code as accurately as possible, in order to ensure that everything is preserved.

Most of us have heard of freeablo. I use to check in quite often after it went live, hoping it would eventually bring us an identical gameplay experience. But the slow development made it apparent that re-implementing everything from scratch was going to take far longer than just reversing what's already there.
The issue with collaboration is more of the legal dilemma this project creates. Devilution is a derivative work created entirely from existing code. Freeablo on the other hand is a new, original design based on readily available documentation and guess work. I'd imagine the freeablo devs follow up with similar guidelines as the Wine devs. That is, they refuse any code made from reverse engineering, and don't want anything to do with it in order to keep the project clean of any legal implications.

Personally I think Freeablo Wheybags should work with us on this . This is of course if he wants.
This is already a lot further along than his work . Also, he has already insight on how to incooperate OGL into this project. I really hope though that rocket or any of silly libs aren't used. I think SDL2 or OGL could be used.

I do not think that collaboration is a good idea.
If someone wants to play game, they do it. (buy/download)
If someone wants to make a copy, they are doing reverse engineering. (devilution)
If someone wants to create a game, they are building a new game by them self. (freeablo)
There are other clones and people wants to make even more #96 .
PS: I hope that Wheybags, Predelnik and other contributors would continue their work on a modern cross-platform clone.

@akuskis, out of all the projects this is the most pure and less hacked out there.
Freeablo I considered dead once realized the libraries were being swapped multiple times, didn't have a lot of support and required the origional diablo.exe.
The project despite being ambitious lacked support. Many people just talked and said they wanted to help but never did.
Also, I found the code difficult to understand .
