parental-leave's Issues

Alphabetize companies in the .csv file

I feel like as the document grows, it would be helpful to have some form of organization to help people navigate the information. Perhaps the easiest is to just organize the company names by alphabetical order. Thoughts?

Data normalization

There seems to be a bit of a mismash of how to report weeks at partial salary. I would say we should probably normalize the numbers themselves to be weeks at full salary so they can be compared better.

Where to put tooling?

I wrote a little tool to upload this into Elasticsearch so we can explore this data in Kibana. Yay visuals!

I've made Kibana available to all who want to play:

https://f29fa6d0ef52390bc7bd13585ee02711.us-east-1.aws.found.io/app/kibana#/dashboard/Parental-Leave

Credentials: family/family

I'll see about leaving this cluster up somewhat-permanently and somehow getting it a more palatable URL :)

Thoughts? Here's a sample:

Add definitions

The federal government says that they give 12 weeks "paid" sick leave, but it is not equal to 12 weeks a company in the list probably gives. (here is an explanation: http://www.federaltimes.com/story/government/management/compensation/2015/01/15/paid-family-leave/21802251/ -- the thing to note is that is it not paid as much as it is an advancement of sick time and vacation (after you have burned through all of you vacation and sick time)

Thoughts --

  1. Add a specific definition of what "paid" parental leaves means.
  2. Add a way to describe what is offered in the case that it does not meet the definition of parental leave. (I can see this one mucking up the dataset.)

I willing to submit a pull request, but thought it might need some discussion first.
Discuss.

Add bonus column

Instead of having the cash bonuses be listed in a separate "notes" column, it would be nice to simply have a Bonus column that people can put the value into.

Collect Regional data

Originally I intended this to be company based, but I can see a case for this being regional. There are some closed PRs which can be opened.

I'm open to hearing people's comments about this.

I guess the reality is it's not just going to be a few companies that make parental leave better, but it'll need to be mandated to some degree.
