Should these be independent from the search settings (Just everything that intersects the current viewport)? Or affected by time, facet and term query? (Or some mix?)

@bhartzler: have an extra count for the background in the main control, along the lines of

552 Results | 14 Backgrounds | Filters

Clicking "backgrounds" will open an additional list to check/uncheck background layers?
