I guess a better solution would be to introduce a new variable $ExternalIPv4 and maybe also $ExternalIPv6

Not really. In most cases it is the IPv4 IP that is needed. And making sure that existing var returns the v4 address would mean that all existing templates and instances will continue to work and won't need updating

An additional var for v6 could be added if needed in the future

And when I say "continue to work", I mean work like they did previously. They are currently broken
