Symbols in lower-left corner aren't clickable?

I assumed that the symbols in the lower-left corner of the display would be clickable to do things. It seems like they don't, at least on my box? (Debian Linux with weird NVidia setup, dual-monitor with scaling.) Not sure what was intended here.

Input doesn't work

Debian Linux, NVidia, weird monitor setup (dual monitors with scaling). Any attempt at keyboard or mouse input is ignored with a log message like

    EPA: the origin was outside of the CSO: 0.0005939454 > tolerence (0.000011920929)

Font usability issue

The prompt at the beginning to "use 1 to drop a lift" is rendered in such a way that it could equally be an "I" or "l". Made me think input wasn't working.
