musicrecommendations's Issues

Music 20200823

  • Dan Terminus - The Wrath of Code : Cyberpunk Dance music, this album will deliver you into the future promised in literature of old. Strap on your cyberdeck, don your monofilament katana, and hit the streets.
  • Muddy Waters - Anthology : Incredibly influential and immensely important Blues artist who set a standard by which others would be judged. This album collects most of his recordings, giving you two hours of down home blues to leave you satisfied (in a way Muddy Waters never was).
  • Phantogram - Voices : Enjoyable Synthpop/Electro Pop with good rhythm, memorable lyrics, and a touch of a certain retro sweetness that sticks with you like a fudge pop melting all over your hands in the summer heat after you bought it from your neighborhood ice cream truck.

Music 20200810

  • DJ Krush - Jaku : Wonderful showcase of this Japanese Trip-Hop/Turntablist's skills. Excellent collaborations with some Indie Rap darlings from the early 2000's as well as an interesting mix of Jazz and traditional Japanese music over solid Hip-Hop beats.
  • Boy Hits Car - S/T : Pioneers of the Lovecore subgenre of Hardcore, these high energy rockers spread their hot, sticky love on every track of this debut LP.
  • Clutchy Hopkins - Walking Backwards : Trip-Hop with a touch of the avant-garde. Mostly chill, definitely trip-hop.

Music 20200807

  • Laura Mvula - Sing to the Moon : Soft, powerful atmospheric R&B. Strong singing and pure infectious moods. Digs into your soul and finds that quiet place.
  • Pale Honey - S/T : Minimalist Indie Rock/Indie Pop out of Sweden, this duo crafts solid emotional tunes that get your head bopping. Grow that pandemic hair long and put on your favorite pair of skinny jeans, it's time to get moving.
  • Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control : Sometimes, rarely, I agree with the cool kids. This is an awesome Garage Rock album that is Queer as hell and I cannot recommend it enough. It's been out awhile and I've been into Gossip for quite sometime. I assume you are too (you cool kid you).
  • Tricot - THE : Let's round this list out with a little all-female, Japanese Math Rock. This is one of their early releases that showcases this bands energy and technique. I've looked up some of the translated lyrics online and they're trippy. A fine listen even if you don't understand Japanese (I can pick up a word or two because I'm such a dang Weeb).

Music 20200812

I'm feeling North Carolina today so here's some music from that state.

Music 20200819

  • Black Sabbath - Master of Reality : One of the legendary Doom/Stoner Metal albums. As a child, I didn't understand what Sweetleaf was about. Oh little naive me...
  • Bolt Thrower - War Master : Fabulous, heavy, Death Metal that is perfect for your next game of Warhammer (Fantasy or 40K). These Brummie monsters lasted 30 years and left a legacy of brutal metal as inspiration for us all.
  • Mclusky - The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire : The last Mclusky album and has these Indie Noise rockers at their peak. Weird lyrics, wild riffs, pounding drums. Fantastic folks from Cardiff (YEAAAH!) making Wales (and Noise Rock hipsters like myself) proud.

Music 20200719

  • The Horrors - Primary Colours : This album marked their transition to proper Post-Punk Shoegaze sounds. It's probably the only album by The Horrors that I can still stand to listen to. Good mopey British fun.
  • DIIV - Oshin : A journey through Indie Shoegaze (with a bit of a Grunge twist at times). Close your eyes and let the Oshin wash over you.
  • Interpol - Marauder: Everyone knows this band (right?). This is their latest and it is one of the best releases they've had in years.

Music 20200712

Galactic - Into the Deep : This release is a bit of a branching out for the modern New Orleans Funk outfit. Solid overall.
Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer : Grime Rap darling from the UK, this first album of his had some unexpected (for me) moments of chill.
Dangerdoom - The Mouse & The Mask : Fantastic collab between Danger Mouse and MF Doom put out by the Adult Swim folks of Cartoon Network. Lots of good samples, sick-ass beats, and lyrics sweeter than a bowl of cereal as you watch Saturday morning cartoons.

Music 20200808

Music 20200811

  • Alien Sex Fiend - Best of Alien Sex Fiend : Collection of songs from these classic wild, Horror-Punk/Goth-Punk nutters. At a goth concert earlier this year, I met an old-man goth who used to hang out with Alien Sex Fiend back in the day. He assured me that they lived a life as nuts as their music (until they too got old and burned out). Now I'm Feeling Zombified has been one of my personal anthems since...well...for a very, long time.
  • Melii - phAses : New-ish to the Rap scene, Melii brings an easy and sexually-charge flow with butt-thumping beats. This album has tracks fit for the club and for chilling out (or other things) in your bedroom.
  • Lindemann - F & M : One of my friends and fellow music nerds recommended this German Industrial band to me recently and I quite enjoyed listening to this album today. It's a side project from the lead singer of Rammstein and a dude who plays many instruments.

Music 20200716

  • M.I.A. - Kala : I watched a short music documentary on M.I.A. and her Paper Planes song in particular. It reminded me of my general enjoyment of this album and how weird her sound/sensibilities are/were in the Pop scene.
  • Bjork - Selmasongs: Music From The Motion Picture "Dancer In The Dark" : A gorgeous soundtrack to a really screwed up musical movie. I listened to this album for a long time before actually seeing the movie. Drove home how truly dark some of the songs are. Solid album, interesting movie. Would recommend.
  • Bat for Lashes - Fur and Gold : Dreamy Indie-Rock full of moody minimalism. Good for a rainy morning or a chilled out night of deep philosophical thought.

Music 20200821

  • Blaqk Audio - Beneath the Black Palms : Latest side project album from two members of AFI. Strong retro Synthpop full of electronic hooks and smart pop construction.
  • Iceage - Beyondless : A rather mature LP from these Noise Punks out of Denmark. This album is more Art Rock than Punk. Feels like a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist.
  • No Age - Nouns : Raucous, kinda messy, Art Punk/Hardcore flirting with pop riffs.

Music 20200723

  • Apoptygma Berzerk - Harmonizer : Really cool dark(ish) Synthwave that reminds me of the best parts of that genre without much of the worst parts.
  • Covenant - Modern Ruin : Solid danceable (mostly) Goth Industrial EBM/EDM. Get your arms swinging, don your fishnets and pant an Eye of Horus under your actual eye as you listen to this and remember those dark and meaningless nights in your local goth clubs.
  • Beats Antique - Contraption Vol. II : A bit of a different direction from these faves of the bellydance set. Still dang good Tribal EDM any way you slice it.

Music 20200801

First of the month, let's check out some first albums from some bands/artists

  • Fever Ray - S/T : Solo experimental Electro Pop project from Karin of The Knife, this hauntingly beautiful album is full of skillfully minimalist arrangements and soul-scratching lyrics.
  • The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys : Many folks (myself included) generally consider Boys Don't Cry to be the first album of these massively influential Brit Rock/Post-Punk boys. Turns out, Three Imaginary Boys is the first studio LP for The Cure. Jangly, a bit all over the place, but full of punch and style.
  • Kamasi Washington - The Epic : This is the first non-self released album from this awesome modern Jazz titan. Complex in its freedom, great sounds to relax to or to be inspired by.

Music 20200809

  • Skating Polly - The Make It All Show : A Power Pop Punk/Indie Rock/Neo-Grunge band made of various siblings who have been doing their thing since some of the members were 9 and 14 years old. Much passion, much skill, much rock.
  • Le Butcherettes - Sin Sin Sin : Their first album, and probably my favorite from this band. Right solid Garage Punk with Art-Rock slathered on like butter.
  • Marmozets - The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets : Composed of two sets of siblings, the Marmozets burst out Post-Hardcore/Alternative Rock that's accessible and gets your butts moving.

Music 20200718

  • Algiers - The Underside of Power : Gospel-Punk that never fails to get my moneymaker shaking. This is their sophomore release and probably my favorite from them.
  • Garmarna - Vedergällningen : Nordic Electro-Folk music that's perfect for dancing under the aurora borealis or getting crunk in a beer hall. Or quietly contemplating the wondrousness of Scandinavia, birthplace of LEGO.
  • Cusses - Golden Rat : Full throttle Rock and/or Roll. Don your leathers and get out there.

Music 20200820

It's Techno Thursday apparently so here's some electronica for your mind and body

  • Enduser - 1/3 : Dark and Industrial-influenced Breakcore/Drum & Bass EP. Haunting vocals in spots and pure madness in others. Perfect short soundtrack to move about a grim future.
  • Pendulum - In SIlico : Utterly accessible Stadium D&B/Techno to send your body into an unending dance spiral. Catchy and full of sing-along bits, this LP helped define Pendulum as D&B royalty in the 2000's.
  • Overseer - Wreckage : You may recognize a track or two from this album if you've ever watched the Animatrix. This DJ drops some solid Breakbeat, Big Beat, and Dance tunes on this album.
  • Squarepusher - Be Up A Hello : Latest LP from this Experimental Electronica/IDM artist. This album is mostly an Acid D&B release with some Chiptune stylings thrown in. Almost like the music a robot would make if it installed a human brain inside of itself (my dream!).

Music 20200822

  • Happy Hardcore (Back to the 90's Best Old Skool) : Bouncy compilation of Happy Hardcore Techno/Dance tracks. Flashes me back to my rave days back in the 90's. I'm not saying you should drop acid or take ecstasy while listening to this album, but doing either may make your experience more authentic.
  • Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll : This one-and-done eclectic Big Beat duo burst onto the scene then seemed to disappear. You've likely heard a few tracks from this album and not known who they were (Bang On and On Her Majesty's Secret Service especially). Right solid party Techno to brighten your day.
  • Fountaines D.C. - A Hero's Death : Modern Post-Punk/Mope Rock/Goth Rock out of Dublin, Ireland. I was surprised to see this new album from them since their first LP came out less than a year ago. This one is a bit more...uptempo? than their first and worth a spin.

Music 20200717

For today's recommendations, let's get Medieval.

  • Qntal IV - Ozymandias : This Electro-Medieval band out of Germany makes delicious music to fill your thatched-roof cottage or ancient cathedral with the sounds of a future-past that never existed.
  • Corvus Corax - Mille Anni Passi Sunt : Released as the new millennium was dawning, this Medievalcore album is a good example of what these German wild men are about.
  • Niyaz - Sumud : A captivating blend of Medieval-era Sufi poetry, Iranian folk music, stylings from across the Middle East, and bits of Techno.

Music 20200818

  • Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out : Indie Punk stalwarts, this album showcases the intensity and skill of this Olympia, WA trio. I got introduced to S-K by one of my coworkers when I was a backend programmer at a shady dot com company back in the olden days of the late 90's. This record still very much holds up.
  • Dengue Fever - Venus on Earth : Cambodian Psych-Rock revivalists bringing some head-spinning riffs and rhythms. Fuzzy Garage Rock that will flash you back to the 60's and 70's
  • Savages - Silence Yourself : Debut LP from these French-British, all female, Goth Punk/Post-Punk artists. Haunting, no-holds barred, persistent rock that dares you to keep up. One of my favorite albums of the last decade.

Music 20200720

  • LTJ Bukem - Producer 05 : Some old-ish school (gosh, I remember when this album was new) Drum and Bass/Jungle from one of the originators of Jungle.
  • BLOKHE4D - Bad Taste Vol. 4 : Heavy and dark compilation of Drum and Bass tracks from a variety of darktech DnB artists. Curated by BLOKHE4D nearly a decade ago, this album still feels fresh.
  • Cab Calloway - Are You Hep To The Jive? : Take a step back in time with this compilation of the legendary Swing/Jazz singer Cab Calloway. One of my best friends played this album for me when we were in college and it helped to continue opening the doors to my Swing/Jazz/Jump-Blues fascination. Kindly, find a dance partner (even if it is a literal hep cat) and groove out to this swingin' alligator.

Music 20200727

  • RJD2 - Deadringer : Debut release that put this fabulous DJ on the map. Skilled turntablism and Hip-Hop in a hard hitting package.
  • DJ Shadow - Our Pathetic Age : Latest album from the monumental DJ Shadow. The first disc/half is quite a bit more experimental than his other records, this album takes a bit of getting used to, but it is worth a listen. The second disc/half is a straight up Hip-Hop record.
  • Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me : Solid, thought-provoking British Hip-Hop. The track "Witness (1 Hope)" saw a fair bit of play and was sampled by a variety of artists in the early 2000's. I'd also recommend checking out the video for that song, it still make me and my kids laugh to see it.

Music 20200803

  • Various Artists - Rewind Vol. 6 : Modern Soul, Funk, and Afrobeat compilation with a very old school feel. Get groovy while rockin' your platform shoes for a night out on the town.
  • Mocean Worker - Mixed Emotional Features : One of the pioneers of Jazz influenced Drum & Bass (sometimes called Jazz & Bass), Mocean Worker brings that playful sensibility to most of his records. This album is a bit less jazzy than his later/more recent releases, but it's still there.
  • Amon Tobin - Supermodified : Probably the most accessible of this Brazilian Nu Jazz/Intelligent Dance Music (IDM, I am not a fan of that genre name)/Drum & Bass artists early albums. Hits hard in spots, experimental in others, smooth as silk covered in olive oil and baby lotion in others.

Music 07-11-2020

It's 7-11 Day! So let's have a gross hot dog and a Slurpee together

  • The Detroit Cobras - Baby : Great Garage Rock album that features a great song about eating hot dogs.
I think there may be some sexual inuendo in there somewhere...who knows?
  • Iceage - Beyondless : These Danish nutters evolved from awesome Noise Punk to more expansive rockers. Their on this list for two reasons: 1. This is an interesting album from a solid band 2. They have ice in their name which reminds me of Slurpees so...shut up! It's clever!
  • The Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death : 7-11? Convenience Store? Get it! This is probably my favorite album from DK. A right awesome political/social commentary Punk rock album

Music 20200729

Music 20200725

  • Ikebe Shakedown - Kings Left Behind : Retro instrumental music that's a diverse mix Funk, Afrobeat, Western theme songs(?!), and Jazz probably. Don your platform shoes and get to steppin'.
  • Speedometer - This is Speedometer Vol. 1 & 2 : A collection of fabulous Funk and Soul tracks from these UK heralds of the Funk revival.
  • Walls of Jericho - With Devils Amongst Us All : Brutal female-fronted Metalcore, this album will stick it's hands in your gut, rip out your small intestine, fashion a wallet chain from it, and then head to the mosh pit. My favorite album from this band.
  • Denali - The Instinct : Though it's been years since I've listened to this dreamy, Shoegaze-y Indie Rock album, I still hum songs from this album without remembering where they came from. I'm firing this one up later to bask in the memories.

Music 20200827

  • Misfits - Walk Among Us : Horror Punk at it's finest. The Misfits pretty much defined the genre. Most of you have surely heard tracks from this LP and have the devil lock to prove it.
  • Les Savy Fav - Cat and the Cobra : Art Rock-style Post-Hardcore. This is their second album and I think it was the first one I heard of theirs back when it was released (just before the turn of the 21st century). Weird hooks and passionate lyrical howls made me a fan then and to this day. Not their strongest release but it showcases what this band is about.
  • Cyantific - Ghetto Blaster : Debut album (I think) from this Jungle and Liquid Drum & Bass DJ. It definitely smacks of the 2000's sound for the genre(s), but still good.

Music 20200824

  • Gifts From Enola - From Fathoms : Mid-career album from these Virginia-based Post-Rock instrumentalists. Heavy and contemplative with Prog Rock riffs and soundscapes at times.
  • The Budos Band - Burnt Offering : Heart pumping horn-driven Afrobeat out of Chicago.
  • Brownout - Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath : Awesome Latin Funk Rock outfit who did an album of Black Sabbath covers in their signature style. Great for metal heads, funkanaughts, Latin music enthusiasts, and anyone who demands that their booty be shakin' and their head be noddin'.

EP's and singles today!

Music 20200816

  • Atomic Blonde Soundtrack : Though I still haven't seen the movie, I dig this soundtrack. 80's sounds drive the action in that flick (which is quite a bit different than the comics it is based on).
  • Metallica - Garage, Inc : Metallica doing covers of a wide range of artists and musical genres. Still Metal AF though.
  • The Mighty Blue Kings - Meet Me Uptown : Big fan of these Jump Blues revivalists. Saw them live not terribly long after this album was released. Super fun! It was one of the loudest shows I'd ever been too (blaring horns inside of a smallish club in DC...amazing). Great for when you feel like dancing or swaying in your chair snapping your fingers like a hep cat.

Music 20200731

For this last day of July, let's flash it back to the 1980's. For old bastards like myself, I still very much remember the 80's. There were some good times, there were some less-good times. There were some just god-awful clothing and style choices being made on a regular basis by the denizens of the 80's. There was definitely some damn solid music erupting from that decade though. Here's some interesting bits.

  • Sigue Sigue Sputnik - 21st Century Boys - The Best Of : Like nuclear missiles blasting out of underground silos in a corn field, these boys burst forth to assure your mutual destruction. Fun Electro Dance Punk/Glam Punk made before Dance Punk was really even a thing.
  • X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents: The Anthology : Early and influential British Punk Rock with a kick of New Wave at times. Their lead singer, Poly Styrene was legendary for her live stage presence, her artistry, and also for being a person of color in the Punk scene. OK so technically, X-Ray Spex is not an 80's band (they are a 70's band), but they had an impact on the 80's and that's when I heard them so...shut up! It's my list, dang it.
  • Southern Death Cult - S/T : Goth/Post-Punk with a knowing nod to Pop Rock stylings. The lead singer went on to form the very famous/successful Rock band The Cult. You can hear some of the origins of their sound in this album.
  • Sonic Youth - Goo : Released on the last year of the decade, Goo is one of the three best Sonic Youth albums (in my oh-so-very humble opinion). Indie Noise Rock that laid the groundwork for many other bands and genres that followed.

Music 20200825

  • Royal Crown Revue - Mugzy's Move : Rather underrated Jazz/Swing album from the Swing revival of the 90's. Worth donning your favorite suit and heading to the speakeasy for a drink and maybe a fight or two.
  • The Wytches - Annabel Dream Reader : Debut album of a bunch of British youngsters obsessed with Psychedelic Rock. Insistent, fuzzed-out, emotional, psyche revival madness. The very first track (Digsaw) plays like a wonderfully harsh magic-mushroom trip. Raw and ugly-beautiful. Like me?

Music 20200805

  • Cibo Matto - Pom Pom: The Essential Cibo Matto : Collection of most of the output of this Trip-Hop/Art Pop duo. Trippy lyrics and inventive stylings keep their music relevant through the years.
  • Luscious Jackson - Fever in Fever Out : A Rock N' Roll band wrapped in a Trip-Hop blanket, many folks who heard this group back when this album came out seldom got past the first track. That's a shame because there is plenty of upbeat and chill tracks on this release to enjoy.
  • Electric Wizard - Dopethrone : Doom/Stoner Metal with vicious vocals, hard-hitting, sludgy guitars and pounding drums. I imagine smoking dope would only enhance the experience of listening to this already solid album.

Music 20200724

  • Pink Floyd - The Wall : Proper classic Rock album. To celebrate Roger Waters agreeing to play the entirety of this album live at the Berlin Wall 30 years ago this week. I very much remember the fall of the Berlin Wall and how utterly mind blowing it was. Helpful reminder that political situations (and totalitarianism) doesn't last forever and takes work to undue.
  • Above & Beyond - Group Therapy : Liquid D&B/EDM. Kinda trancey, dancey. Good for what ails ya.
  • Nancy Sinatra - Boots : Old school pop that will flash you back to the 60's. As you play this album, close your eyes and imagine me in the most fabulous of red leather boots and the miniest of mini skirts. Groovy!

Music 20200713

Music 20200721

  • The Electric Peanut Butter Company - Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics Vol.1 : Despite the title, this is the second album of this Retro Electro-Funk/Funk Rock duo. Solid grooves and interesting variations on a theme.
  • Felix Da Housecat - Kittenz and Thee Glitz : Strong House DJ album from Felix Da Housecat with a lot of collaboration from a variety of artists. I was quite the fan of this album when it was released and though I don't listen to it often anymore, the track "Silver Screen (Shower Scene)" still makes me want to grab some glowsticks and head to rave (to be the oldest frickin' dude on the dance floor probably).
  • Paul Oakenfold - Bunkka : Downright legendary album from a downright legendary DJ. Most of the tracks on this album are quite accessible and straight up bangers. Back when I first got it, I enjoyed this album much more than I expected (it's basically Techno/House with strong Pop sensibilities). My music elitist heart grew three sizes that day...

Music 20200728

Music 20200806

  • Kate Nash - Girl Talk : Not content to stay in any one genre, Kate Nash burst into the world of Indie British Rock with Girl Talk. Jangly and slingin' sass like confetti, a good 2010's romp.
  • DJ Fresh - Escape From Planet Monday : One of DJ Fresh's early solo(ish) works after breaking out of Bad Company. Dance-able, stadium Drum & Bass to please the masses and the 'heads alike. It requires that your moneymaker be shaken, not stirred.
  • Esben and the Witch - Violet Cries : Eerie, Goth-heavy Shoegaze with more than a little Drone sprinkled in for taste. Good mood music if you're planning a séance or ritual demon summoning. I know when I've called out to the dead beyond the thin veil that separates us, this album has guided my hand, my thoughts, and my deeds on more than one occasion.

Music 20200826

  • Queen - Jazz : Rock legends, Queen. A friend recently went biking and I started thinking of the bike ride my son and I did this weekend. Which made me think of Bicycle Race. Queen is great. Listen to Queen.
  • Pelican - Australasia : Post-Metal instrumental heavy Math Rock. Long and atmospheric, this was their debut studio LP. Puts one in a right broody mood, this.
  • Morcheeba - Big Calm : This album put these Trip-Hop masters on the map. Right solid beats, engaging lyrics, and memorable as heck. This has been a go-to album for me over the decades.
