xiphos's Issues

Gnomesword 0.3.0 Crashes on startup.

Gnomesword 0.3.0 w/ sword-1.5.1a on SuSE 6.4 Linux crashes on startup everytime. Previous releases have not done this.

I am a C/C++ programmer w/ no GUI programming experience, if there is any other info, or things I can try, let me know. Here is the the backtrace:

References followed incorrectly

Using gnomesword-0.7.2a and sword-1.5.3, when a
commentary has a reference (such as TSK) within the book
(i.e. when it says merely "5:3" without mentioning a book),
gnomesword thinks it’s talking about Genesis and not the
crurentbook. (maybe this has been fixed already in the
latest versions?)

duplicate history entries?

not sure if this is a request or a bug?

if I visit a verse, it adds it to my history. If I
then visit a couple of other ones, and then go back to
the original verse, it re-adds the verse to the
history. Since I find the history very valuable, and
use it heaps, I don’t like getting all these useless
links in the history, since they are already there…

this could simply be a request if it is meant to be a
true, exact history, and show exactly what has been
visited, and exactly how many times, etc… ;)

if that doesn’t make sense, chuck me an email! :)
thanks! :)

not able to view verses

I am using RH9 on a Dell Optiplex 400Ghz System. I have
loaded all of the required dev rpms that are in the
install help docs. Gnomesword comes up and only shows
the verse numbers, but not the verse itself.
My box is running Gnome 2.2

cannot make

Dear Sirs,

I was trying to install Gmomesword (I tried 0.5.2c,
0.7.0, 0.7.1), and always got following mistake while
running make
sw_bookmarks.cpp:34:19: swmgr.h: No such file or
directory
sw_bookmarks.cpp:35:22: swconfig.h: No such file or
directory
sw_bookmarks.cpp:36:22: swmodule.h: No such file or
directory
sw_bookmarks.cpp:37:22: versekey.h: No such file or
directory

I use ASPLinux 7.1, kernel 2.4.2-0 at i386-compiliant
machine (AMD Duron)

Below are full logs for ./configure and make

I’d be very grateful, if you could tell me what should
I do to make everything work

Also, I want you to know, that search in Russian and
Ukrainian modules is not working both in Bibletime and
Sword for Windows. The search is starting, but it just
does not find anything.

Thanks,
Yuriy

Original Ticket: gnomesword/bugs/14

only verse numbers appearing

RH8.0 with ximian desktop 2
sword 1.5.5 from binary rpm
gnomesword 0.9.7-1 from binary rpm
several bible modules

gnomesword starts up, but the only thing i see are the
verse numbers. i tried several background and font
colors to no avail.

Reported by: arpeldoo

Original Ticket: gnomesword/bugs/38

Hebrew text is displayed backwards

Hebrew text is written right to left, but the Hebrew
modules and Interlinear display it left to right as if
it were English.

Once this is corrected, the verse numbers should be
displayed on the right of the window (i.e. at the
beginning of the verse).

Original Ticket: gnomesword/bugs/34

after install, app never runs...segfault

This is the 5th system I’ve tried to install gnomesword on.

I have never gotten it to work at all.

These have been RedHat 8.0 systems, will full installs,
running Ximian (gnome) desktops.

All current red hat network updates applied.

Here’s the Bug Buddy info:

No Text Visible

Running GnomeSword on RedHat 6.2

Versions:
gnomesword-0.3.7a-1
sword-1.5.1a-1

Installed the Webster and ISV modules. I can open either module and it recognizes the books of the Bible and the Chapter numbers, however I can not find how to view text.

I assume I have something misconfigured in mods.conf, have a rights issue of some sort or have no clue how to use gnomesword.

Please advise.

shows up but the text. I can search switch between
versons however no text is visable.

I’m new to linux and believed that all files were
installed in default locations however the intructions
for unziping modules did not exist as described in the

stated above gnomesword seems to find the files but not

Hebrew text backwards

I know Hebrew text reads from right to left. But the
Hebrew text is showing up from left to right throughout.

Finally got the Unicode font to work. I had to rerun
mkfontdir after changeing the fonts.scale file by hand.
It didn’t work just copying over the fonts.dir file.

Here’s what I had to do to get Bitstream Cyberbit font
to work with GnomeSword:

(1) Run ttmkfdir in my …/TTF directory
(2) Edit the fonts.scale file by hand. (Adding the
extra line for the iso10646-1 and adding 1 to the top
number)
(3) Run mkfontdir

Running Slackware 8.1 on i686-pc-linux-gnu
KDE 3.01
GnomeSword

p.s. I find it odd that Bibletime did not even need
Bitstream Cyberbit Hebrew and Greek fonts showed up
without any modification. However, Bibletime did need
Bitstream Cyberbit for the Hebrew Vowel Points.

Segmentation fault under RedHat 8.0

Gnomesword won’t even start under RedHat 8.0, it
crashes with a segmentation fault immediately. I
followed your instructions to the letter: installed gal,
libgal, gal-devel, gtkhtml-*. I then created the softlink,
then installed sword and gnomesword. The only glitch I
had on installation was that libgal19-0.19.1-2 was an
older version than what was already on the newly
installed RedHat 8.0.

I am trying to break away from MS Windows so I need a
good Bible study program for Linux. I currently use
QuickVerse 6 under Windows, which is an excellent
program.

I was hoping that the push to make Linux a viable
desktop O/S would net me an equally good Bible
program in a single RPM that I could download and
install; you know, be the typical computer user who is
out there who just wants to install a product and get to
work. While I can certainly tinker with Gnomesword to
get it to work, I just don’t have the time anymore. I need
a plug-n-play solution.

Make module indexing more user friendly

I started to hack this and it’s not done yet so I
don’t have a patch… I’ve got a really damn dirty
hack..

I think that in the popup menus, shortcut bars, etc..
modules should be displayed with module->Description()
instead of module->Name(). It is easier for a user to
make sense of. Instead of seeing "NIV" the user would
see "New International Version"

To do this an additional module list is needed or a
function that translates from module->Description() to
module->Name() is needed.

How I hacked it was to create an stlmap in gs_sword.cpp

typedef map<string, string> modDescMap;

in the module globals I put
modDescMap descriptionMap;

then I made a function:
modNameFromDesc(gchar\* modName, gchar\* modDesc)
{
strcpy(modName, descriptionMap[modDesc].c_str());
}

then I fixed up the activation callbacks like so:

on_mainText_activate(..)
{
gchar modName16, modDesc;
bzero(modName, 16);
modDesc = (gchar_)user
data;
modNameFromDesc(modName, modDesc);
changecurModSWORD(modName, TRUE);
}

repeat for other activation callbacks.

lastley, in gs_sword:initSWORD(..)

I replaced biblemods = g_list_append(biblemods, curMod-
>Name());

with

biblemods = g_list_append(biblemods, curMod-
>Description());
descriptionMap[string(curMod->Description)] = string
(curMod->Name());

and viola, the popup menus no list the modules by
their proper name and not their module name.

As I get some free time, I’ll try and put this is to a
proper patch and make it a little less hacky.

Compiling 2.x with spell checking - broken

I’m attempting to build the current development version
on Fedora Core 1.

The configure options to enable spell checking appear
to be completely broken :-(

The README says:
GnomeSword will use ispell, aspell or pspell for spell
checking

The INSTALL file says:
GnomeSword will try to locate pspell and if it finds it
build GnomeSword
with pspell.

If you want to use ispell you must run configure with
—enable-use_ispell. GnomeSword will try to locate
ispell and
if it is foung GnomeSword will be built with ispell
support.

If you want to use aspell you must run configure with
—enable-use_aspell. GnomeSword will try to locate
aspell and
if it is foung GnomeSword will be built with aspell support

Fedora Core 1 comes with aspell. I have aspell-devel
installed. I have the file pspell-config.

Looking at configure.in…
- there are no —enable-use_Xspell options (?)
- the configure script will check for
pspell-compat-config, which doesn’t exist on my system.

I patched the configure.in script to look for
pspell-config and link against pspell and aspell (both
provided by the aspell packages on FC1), and re-ran
autoconf. This enabled me to configure to enable
spellchecking.

Greek text

LXX module does not show greek text

WHNU module does not show greek text

TR modules does show the greek font. This is good.

I think there is a general problem with the font
selection tool. If
the font will work in one module and then not the other.

Can’t be the module. Using the same modules with Bible
time.

KJV will not show Strong’s numbers.

New Library problem

I see that the SWORD Library has just been upgraded by
the Bibletime people to 1.5.6… but if I install THAT
Sword library, it breaks GnomeSword.

I’d prefer to use BOTH programs if possible – can you
upgrade GnomeSword to use Sword 1.5.6?

Thank you.

2.0.0.9dev11 doesn't appear on GNOME menu in FC1

The .desktop file is not installed correctly according
to the freedesktop.org specification and is not picked
up by the GNOME desktop in Fedora Core 1.

The file should be installed to /usr/share/applications
In FC1, there are no files in
/usr/share/gnome/apps/Applications. The entries in
/var/lib/kde/menu/… link to the .desktop files in
/usr/share/applications.

I created a new file which conforms to the standard and
also allows for startup notification, has a cleaner
name for the menu entry (Bible Study Tool instead of
GnomeSword2 Bible Study Tool – the app name still
appears in the comment), and adds additional
categories. See the attachment.

Crashes on Debian SID on startup with nothing but a seg
fault. Happens both from the latest debs as well as

website failing?

Hi Guys!

This is a bug-report regarding the projects
website … a whole lot of the links on the
projects home-page doesn’t seem to work
anymore…

Earlier today I was browsing through the
user-list and found a few hints on how I
might get unicode to work after all. Few hours
later the links are gone.

Cheers,
Andrej
