naopgenmo's Introduction

Hi there, I'm Chris Pressey. Most of the things I make, I make under the auspices of Cat's Eye Technologies, so if you're looking for things I've made, you probably want to look at https://codeberg.org/catseye instead.

Cirriculum vitae

When Microsoft acquired GitHub, I didn't leave immediately. I wanted to give them a chance. Well, they had their chance.

It's not that I've suddenly become a Free Software zealot. But I do think open source should be more than just something that enables a "Community Tier (FREE!)" business model.

There is also a significant amount of irony in a code host based on an open-source distributed version control system becoming "too big to fail", and actually, when I say "significant", what I mean is "insupportable". So, I can no longer in good conscience support it.

¹ As far as is humanly possible. Actually, insofar as what I've done has been open sourced I can't actually prevent anyone from uploading it here, "stopping using GitHub" for me consists in (a) not visiting the site if I don't have a very good reason to, (b) not hyperlinking to content on GitHub if there is any other option, and (c) promoting viable alternatives, such as Codeberg.

naopgenmo's Issues

Resources

Starting with some basic ones. Being a relative newcomer to the world of generative music, some of these will be crude/obvious/unvetted. Criticism of these resources, and pointers to better resources, by anyone with more experience, are welcome.

Wikimedia Commons and the Internet Archive both have some public-domain audio files. Some of these are even recordings of operas.

Free Music Archive has a search facility which lets you search by "remix allowed":

http://freemusicarchive.org/search/?adv=1&mood=all+moods&quicksearch=&search-genre=Genres&duration_from=&duration_to=&tempo=0&music-filter-remix-allowed=1

Mutopia has sheet music and MIDI files under various CC licenses (some of which allow remixing). (Their search does not seem to allow searching by license, however.)

Should you be looking for source material for your libretto, there are gobs of text resources listed in NaNoGenMo's resource issues.

over schmover

I started something back in November, but didn't finish it.

Since returning to it, the .ogg file is 250MB and can't be uploaded to SoundCloud.

So, I'm still working on it....

NaOpGenMo is (technically) over!

Sorry, I've been a bit behind in adminning this thing. It's over now! It was over on midnight Nov 30th. New entries will not be accepted, but anyone who's not finished yet (which means @moonmilk, I suppose) can still submit an entry before midnight Dec 15th.*

This year we had about 3 participants and 2 completed-in-time entries, compared to 0 and 0 last year. If we assume this NaN% year-on-year growth continues, by 2024 we will have generated NaN operas!

Not bad for something which escaped from an aesthetico-philosophical wormhole inside the Hollow Earth, springing fully-formed from NaNoGenMo like an Athena from Zeus' forehead!

*Late entries will get a "late" tag, which is a mark of great shame in some cultures, but in other cultures it is highly coveted in a kind of twisted way, I mean, never ever in the history of our civilization has there ever been a NaOpGenMo entry with a "late" tag, wouldn't it be something crazy wild to be the FIRST?

my intent

I've never tried generative music in my life, but I have an interesting idea for libretto generation, so I'll have to figure something out on the music front.
