Retroactive

Retroactive only receives limited support. You should transition from Retroactive to a wide range of supported apps, many of which are built into macOS or free to download. Learn how to transition from Retroactive to supported apps.

Run Aperture, iPhoto, and iTunes on macOS Sonoma, macOS Ventura, macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, and macOS Catalina. Xcode 11.7 on macOS Mojave. Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9, and iWork ’09 on macOS Mojave or macOS High Sierra.

Opening Retroactive

After downloading Retroactive, double click to open it. macOS may prompt you “Retroactive cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.” This is completely normal and expected.

To open Retroactive, right-click on the Retroactive app in Finder, and click “Open” as shown below.

If you right-clicked when opening Retroactive for the first time, you need to right-click for a second time. If Retroactive still can’t be opened, check your GateKeeper settings under the General tab in System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Click “Open Anyway” to open Retroactive.

Retroactive will not harm your Mac. This alert only shows up because Retroactive is not notarized. Retroactive is open source, so you can always examine its source code to make sure it’s safe.

Picking an app

On macOS Sonoma, macOS Ventura, macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, and macOS Catalina, Retroactive can unlock Aperture and iPhoto, or install iTunes. Pick the app you want to run. If you want to run multiple apps from here, pick any one of them. You will always be able to get back to this screen later.

On macOS Mojave and macOS High Sierra, Retroactive can also unlock Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9 (experimental), Xcode 11.7 (requires macOS Mojave), and fix iWork ’09.

I’ll use Aperture as the example, but the same process also works for iPhoto, iTunes, Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9, Xcode 11.7, and iWork ’09.

Locating the app or choosing a version

Retroactive will automatically scan your Mac to locate an existing Aperture, iPhoto, Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9, Xcode 11.7, or iWork ’09 install. If Retroactive has already located the app you would like to run, skip to the next section.

If Retroactive can’t locate an existing install, you’ll either be asked to download it from the Purchased list in App Store, or re-install it from a DVD disc. You can also find the app on another Mac you own, then AirDrop it to this Mac, or restore the app from a Time Machine backup.

If you chose iTunes, Retroactive will ask you which version to install, then automatically download and install it for you.

  • iTunes 12.9.5 supports Dark Mode and most DJ apps.
  • iTunes 12.6.5 supports Ringtones and iTunes U.
  • iTunes 11.4 has a classic look.
  • iTunes 10.7 supports CoverFlow.

If you don’t know which version to install, keep the default setting and click “Continue”.

Authenticating Retroactive

To install or modify the app you chose, you need to authenticate with your login password first. Click “Authenticate”, and enter your login password.

Your password is never stored or sent anywhere. To verify this, you can view Retroactive’s source code.

Modifying the app

Retroactive will install or modify the app you chose. Modifying the app should only take about 2 minutes.

If you chose to install iTunes, this process may longer.

  • Depending on the version you chose, it can take between 10 minutes to an hour.
  • It is completely normal for the fans to spin up during the process.
  • If Retroactive asks for your login password again, re-enter it again.
  • If iTunes 12.9.5 can’t be installed, try to install iTunes 12.6.5.

After installing iTunes, Retroactive will ask you about iPod syncing. If you need to sync with iPod devices, click "Enable Full Disk Access", and follow on-screen instructions provided by Retroactive.

That's it! You can use the app now.

Using the app

After successfully modifying or installing the app, you can play with it to your heart's content.

  • All Aperture features should be available except for playing videos, exporting slideshows, Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Sharing. If RAW photos can't be opened, you need to reprocess them.

  • All iPhoto features should be available except for playing videos, exporting slideshows, Photo Stream, and iCloud Photo Sharing.

  • All features should work for iTunes 12.9.5.

  • Most features should work for iTunes 12.6.5. Use iTunes 12.9.5 or Finder to back up your device instead. Use Apple Configurator 2 to download iOS apps on your Mac.

  • Movies and TV Shows downloaded from the iTunes Store may be unable to play in iTunes. Download or play them in the TV app instead.

  • Some dialogs in iTunes may display a crossed-out iTunes icon. This is purely cosmetic and has no functional impact.

  • All Final Cut Pro 7 features should work.

  • Support for Logic Pro 9 is experimental. You may see frequent freezes and hangs.

  • Most Xcode 11.7 features should work.

  • After fixing iWork ’09, text format and paragraph alignment controls in the format bar should appear correctly. Scroll bars will no longer appear behind the document canvas.

  • After fixing Keynote ’09 with Retroactive, you can normally play slideshows.

  • After fixing Pages ’09 with Retroactive, typing and scrolling in Pages ’09 should be more responsive.

Syncing with a device

If you connect an Apple device to your Mac, and either see nothing in iTunes, or "The device is in use by another user on this computer":

  • Disconnect the device from your Mac, but keep iTunes open.
  • Click on the Spotlight icon (magnifying glass) on the menu bar.
  • Type "Terminal" and press return to open the Terminal app.
  • Enter killall AMPDevicesAgent in the Terminal window, and press return.
  • Connect the Apple device back to your Mac.

If you connect an Apple device to your Mac, and see "iTunes cannot read the contents of the device. Go to the Summary tab in device preferences and click Restore to restore this device to factory settings":

  • You may have installed iTunes with Retroactive 1.4 or earlier.
  • Once you reinstall iTunes using the latest version of Retroactive, iTunes should be able to read the contents of your device as expected.
  • At the end of the installation process, Retroactive will ask you about iPod syncing. If you need to sync with iPod devices, click "Enable Full Disk Access".

If you try to enable VoiceOver for iPod shuffle, but see "iTunes was unable to install the VoiceOver Kit. An unknown error occurred (1701)":

Downloading iOS Apps

Starting from April 2020, you'll need to use Apple Configurator 2 to download iOS apps on your Mac.

Final Cut Pro 7 and the Apple Pro Video Formats update

If you install Apple Pro Video Formats update from Software Update, you may need to follow these instructions to re-enable Final Cut Pro 7.

Reprocessing RAW photos in Aperture

  • In Aperture, if your RAW photos show up as “Unsupported Image Format”, open the “Photos” menu, click on “Reprocess original…”, and reprocess all photos. After reprocessing your RAW photos, you will be able to preview and adjust them as before.

💡 Tip:

  • If some RAW photos still show up as "Unsupported Image Format" after reprocessing, repeat the process above to reprocess all photos again. In other words, you may need to reprocess all photos twice.

Workaround to install Final Cut Pro 7 in VMware Fusion

If you don't have a Mac released before Late 2019, you can still install Final Cut Pro 7 in VMware Fusion to export existing Final Cut Pro 7 projects into XML files. This lets SendToX, DaVinci Resolve, Media Composer, and Premiere Pro open them.

  • Install macOS Mojave virtual machine with VMware Fusion. Other virtual machine software, such as Parallels Desktop, is not supported and will not work.
  • After mounting the Final Cut Studio installer in VMware Fusion, right click on Install Final Cut Studio.pkg > Show Original, then copy FinalCutStudio.mpkg and Packages to VMware Fusion's Desktop
  • Right click on the copied FinalCutStudio.mpkg > Show Package Contents > Resources
  • Right click on Requirements Checker.app > Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources
  • Delete minsys.plist
  • Double click on the modified FinalCutStudio.mpkg to start the install
  • Use Retroactive as usual

To use editing features such as timeline and preview, install macOS Mojave on a real, older Mac released before Late 2019, then run Retroactive as usual.

retroactive's Issues

iPod in Use

Hi! New to Github and this—loving what you've done with iTunes. My problem is that I wanted to use iTunes to manage an older iPod nano instead of Finder, but whenever I try to use iTunes to restore that iPod, I receive an error, and can only restore it with Finder. In addition, iTunes gives me an 'iPod in Use' error when I try to sync it—it says 'This iPod is in use by another user on this Mac." Is there a workaround for this, or maybe to have Finder not recognize the iPod?

Can't Run on Mojave

Hello, thx for your work.

image

I'm hoping this apps can work on 10.14.6 too, cz iTunes with Appstore is not working on 10.14.6

How can I Un-Instal the App? Other than removing it to the trash

How can I Un-Instal the App? Other than removing it to the trash? Can I remove any preferences from the library etc.?
Now that Apple has fixed the "Remote" app I no longer need to use Retractive and have 2 music apps... iTunes and Music on my machine.. What I am looking for is a way to control the volume of the Music app on my desktop via a keystroke when the app is not in the foreground... IE: I am listening to music via the music app but am on Safari.. the phones rings and I want to quickly lower the volume in the Music app without having to go back to Music... Also I am using "Airplay to send music to separate zones in my house... there used to be an app called Sizzlekeys.. but with Catalina it no longer works... I found this app https://github.com/alberti42/iTunes-Volume-Control and it works fine on my wife's computer that never had retroactive installed... but I have 2 machines both running Catalina and it doesn't work on either machine? I had previously installed Retractive on both of those machines... thoughts? suggestions?

Thanks,

AEDeterminePermissionToAutomateTarget issues

Using Mac Media Key Forwarder 2.8 (the release before it supported Catalina) results in the Touch Bar becoming unusable for controlling media playback.

It looks as if the proxying of iTunes permission requests is the cause of the issue. Is anyone aware of a way to fix this on Catalina? Perhaps changing the bundle identifier could be a solution?

macOS 10.15.2 (19C57)
iTunes 12.9.5.5
Music 1.0.2.37

Playback suddenly no longer works in iTunes

iTunes 12.9.5.5 was working marvelously, but suddenly (no idea what could have changed) playback seems to have broken. Now when I play on any song the play button activates and acts as though it will play, but the time does not progress and no sound is emitted from the computer.

Any thoughts?

Aperture - crash after Retroactive completed successfully

This is a brilliant piece of software - worked like a dream on iPhoto, and I couldn't be happier.
However, Aperture is still crashing with following crash report (Have uninstalled Aperture - cleaned with Clean My Mac X and reinstalled Aperture from my AppStore account) - any advice welcome!!

iTunes not seeing iDevices

MacOS 10.15.2 Beta (19C46a), iTunes 12.9.5.5 and Retroactive 1.2 and iOS 13.3:

Neither iPhone nor iPad are recognized by iTunes in order to sync them. This is true regardless of using USB or Wi-Fi connection. The Mac is seeing the devices, as they are listed in Finder sidebar without issues.

Is Finder "highjacking" the devices before iTunes can connected to them? Any workaround?

FCP Suite, DVD Studio...

I've just tried Retroactive and it work great with FCP. But I wonder if it could be extended to other apps in the suite, like DVD Studio Pro?

Can't connect to iCloud Music Library

Whenever iTunes opens, it asks me to sign-in to my iCloud Music Library, but it always fails even though I correctly enter my credentials. After multiple attempts it will sometimes stop.

Aperture Luminar plugin

First up: THANKS for this app, like many people, I have been waiting to install 10.15 because of the Aperture problem.
I didn't have the Luminar 3 plugin for Aperture installed on the volume on which I'm testing 10.15, but I was able to get it working again by copying the plugin from this location
/Library/Application Support/MacPhun Software/Luminar3/Plug-Ins/Luminar3Plugin.ApertureEdit
to here
/Library/Application\ Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/Luminar3Plugin.ApertureEdit
For some reason just creating a symlink didn't work

Dontate?

Is there a donate page? This is amazing, Aperture runs my photography workflows and you sir have saved the day.

Retroactive not working

When I open Aperture nothing is there? Help! Is there a number I can call?

I just installed Retroactive today!

Bundle ID change invalidates Apple's own compatibility fixes

Reading https://worthdoingbadly.com/appkitcompat/, it looks like Apple has their own backward compatibility system.

Interestingly, the Aperture specific adjustments seem to still be present in Catalina 10.15.2.

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C % strings AppKit | grep -i aperture
com.apple.Aperture
NSAdjustWindowForAperture
com.apple.share.System.add-to-aperture

By changing the bundle ID, I am wondering what stability issues might be introduced because AppKit/Foundation/CoreFoundation don't adjust for Aperture anymore.

According to the link above, the list as of High Sierra included the methods:

  • -[NSSplitView resetCursorRects]
  • -[NSTableView _defaultValueForAllowsTypeSelect]
  • -[NSSplitView mouseDown:]
  • -[NSBrowser setPath:]

I am wondering whether there is a way to override LaunchServices so the bundle ID can be left alone.

Learn what to do if iTunes can't be downloaded due to limited internet connectivity

In my case, I have tried severals time to get it downloaded in my Mac and always goes down.
I have locally the 12.8.2 and I can't used it.

It would be great to obtain the link to download the dmg itself, or whatever uses the app in the download to get it in advance. My connection country it's very limited (1,5mb) and the apps problems get things worse.

add new music from CD to iTunes on Catalina

When I open iTunes and try to rip a new CD, the Catalina Music app opens itself and rips the CD. The new songs can't be found in iTunes, I can only see them in the Music App. When I open iTunes again and try 'Add to Library' it starts to import in iTunes but then I get error code 54

Other apps...

Appreciate your having pulled this together. Have you poked around with other apps such as Levelator? This and other apps have been keeping me back from taking the scary plunge...

Adding Preview9.0 compatibility

Preview9.0 (https://github.com/frhd/macOS-Preview9.0) doesn’t work anymore in Catalina (crash at opening any pdf but succeeds with other formats)
So, I’ve tried to put the Mojave version of PDFkit in Preview9.0 with install_name_tool but it still crashes at opening of any pdf file.
I’m not sure if Preview9.0 call call an other version of PDFKit.

What's the license of the software? Not sure if I am allowed to download this app.

iPod problems

If you connect and iPod classic (this case) will prompt to restore the iPod. That would erase all, but then, the iPod goest as factory and then you can't pass the music or any kind of things.

Finder don't show the iPod I the way to pass data to it. Just as and USB hard drive.

Media buttons don't work with iTunes

Hi, I downloaded 12.9.5.5 using Retroactive 1.3 on macOS Catalina 10.15.1.

The play, pause, forward media buttons don't work with iTunes. Is there anyway to enable this?

iPod classic user issue

When I connect the iPod classic to iTunes, an alert says that the iPod is already used by another user and can't be connected. How can I solve this?

Uninstall Apps Installed through Retroactive

First off, thank you for a great app. I installed iTunes on MacOS Catalina and used it without issue for a few months. With the latest update to Catalina the built-in Music app is now performing the way I need it to perform, and I am looking to uninstall iTunes.

What is the correct way to uninstall an app installed through Retroactive? Is there a built in method, GUI-based or command-line based? Or can I just use a typical Mac app uninstaller like CleanMyMacX or AppCleaner?

iTunes 12.6.5 backup error -42

Hi,

first of all thank you for the amazing app. I installed it on a test container under catalina. The installation worked just fine, but I have one issue with iTunes 12.6.5.

Whenever I try to backup my iPhone X (iOS 13.2) the backup failed with error code -42. That is not a big deal, because therefore I can use other ways. I was not able to find an information regarding that error code. Is there something you can do to fix that type of an issue?

Thx in advance.

Thanks for your excellent App.

Retroactive is really cool that can help me run iTunes 10.7 and iPhoto in Catalina. I'm looking forward to Retroactive support for more apps such as iBooks 1.0,Photo Booth 6.0 and Safari 4.0.
Thank you again.

Retroactive Stalls on Extraction

I'm a nobody... Running Catalina 10.15.3 on a 2019 27inch iMac 6 core i5. I'm trying to run your Retroactive 1.5 and it stalls in the Extract iTunes portion. The first attempt I cancelled it after waiting 2 hours on that step. Second attempt is still stalling after an hour. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

iTunes on Catalina does not show up in Remote

I am unable to control neither your reinstalled iTunes 12.9.5.5 nor the Catalina-native Music with the "Remote" iOS app. iTunes always complaints that it needs to be given permissions for incoming connections (which I give), to no avail. Is it possible to uninstall iTunes (for diagnostics).

will sponsor iPod nano fix

@cormiertyshawn895: nice work with Retroactive! I am wondering if some financial support would make a difference in being able to debug the iPod syncing problems, in particular for the latest gen iPod nano. Either way, greatly appreciative of your work here.

Retroactive Issu

Hello,
Retroactive open well, but when I click on any app to unlock (Final cut Pro 7 for example), nothing happens, no window appears...

Aperture Plugins

Good Afternoon,

I’m writing you only to ask you a question in the old aperture application I was used to have some plugins installed.

But right now i can not install the same plugins on the aperture installed with retroactive.

Is there any solution?

Best regards.

Photo Stream and Photo Sharing - not working

Photo stream and photo sharing appear not to be working. Aperture complains "... you must be signed into your iCloud account." for it to work, even though I am signed in to iCloud.

Thx

Open iTunes by default instead of Music

Is there any way to open iTunes by default instead of the Music app when using the media controls or when a direct link is opened (for example: shared apple music links)?

iTunes 12.9.5 HDCP error when trying to play purchased video content

I am unable to play any purchased video content in iTunes on my computer. I get an error every time I click play saying that it won't play on my display due to HDCP not being supported. If I download the video and navigate to the video file in Finder, the video will play fine on the Apple TV app or Quicktime, so this is specific to this version of iTunes.

iTunes 12.9.5.5 - Cannot play music stored on shared volume

Playing music stored on a shared volume, which is how I managed my library on pre-Catalina OS's, results in a spinning wheel of death and a force quit is required. Sometimes the spinning wheel stops and iTunes become responsive again but the track does not play. My iTunes library folder is still kept on the local drive, just the music media is store on a shared volume.

'Song Info' and 'Show in Finder' function normally so iTunes is referencing the files correctly.

Music.app will play music stored on a shared volume.

Catalina 10.15.1

**UPDATE
This issue happen when using an existing iTunes library. If I add new tracks to the library or create a new one then music stored on a shared volume will play correctly.

**UPDATE 2
OK, after adding new tracks to the library, the existing tracks are now playing correctly. It seems updating the library fixed whatever was at issue.

iCloud Connections hang - Strange Solution

I've noticed that my iCloud Library often spins its wheels for a while. The first time was a result of it uploading the Genius results for 15,000 items. :)

But it still gets stuck when launching or waking from sleep, which means anything strictly in the cloud is stuck there and I can't stream or download it.

Right now, my solution is to disable wifi then re-enable it, and almost every time it comes right up and I'm fine. Not sure if there is an iTunes 12.9.5.5 issue or Catalina/Retroactive.

Learn what to do if your RAW photos show up as “Unsupported Image Format”

In Aperture, if your RAW photos show up as “Unsupported Image Format”, open the “Photos” menu, click on “Reprocess original…”, and reprocess all photos.

After reprocessing your RAW photos, you will be able to preview and adjust them as before.

💡 Tip:
If some RAW photos still show up as "Unsupported Image Format" after reprocessing, repeat the process above to reprocess all photos again. In other words, you may need to reprocess all photos twice.

No brushes in Aperture

After Retroactive my Aperture is doesn't have all the same brushes as before. I can no longer add adjustments or use brushes (skin smoothing, dodge etc.) All I get is "Retouch". I can add adjustments be copying them from another photo and stamp then on to the photo I'm working on but I can not add them from scratch.
