previous-landing's Introduction

Old 2012-2014 Landing page for Code for Hampton Roads

Note that branch gh-pages is what shows on production codeforhamptonroads.org. Master does nothing.

#How to Code for this Repo Option A: Fork, Edit, then Pull Request when ready. Option B: If in the Hampton Road's Brigade and you have write access to repo: Develop/test in your own branch, preferablly a feature-named-branch, and once it's ready for production, merge into gh-pages, which auto deploys to GitHub pages for codeforhamptonroads.org

Also, it's nice if you merge/commit to gh-pages, that you let the team know on our Google Group.

Brigade Template

cfa-brigade-template Thanks @jandjorgensen for creating a forkable brigade template. Feel free to fork ours but this one is a clean one that is configured using YAML and Jekyll https://github.com/jandjorgensen/cfa-brigade-template

#License Apache License, Version 2.0

#Attribution and Thanks This repo and the site codeforvirginiabeach.org uses Twitter Bootstrap and started from their Carousel jumbotron template. They are awesome.

#Issues, Questions, Wana Help? We take Pull Requests! See http://codeforhamptonroads.org for getting involved, and http://codeforamerica.org if outside Hampton Roads, Virginia. Use github's issues if you see a problem or have a feature request. You can contact the maintainer Bret Fisher at [email protected] or @BretFisher.

previous-landing's Issues

broken image and opera

there's a broken image in the content and there's a size difference in the main image (ndoch) in opera

Quick issue that you may be able to spot with my site?

I added blog functionality to the Code for Summit County website, which is based on the Hampton Road jekyll site, and I must have done something weird to it because suddenly my logo no longer shows up. I looked through github (https://github.com/CodeForSummitCounty/codeforsummitcounty.org/tree/gh-pages) and was unable to see why the logo is now showing up in the source code with two // in front of it, instead of none. Do you have a quick minute to take a look at it and let me know if you see anything wrong?

Show number of open Github issues for each project

In addition to linking people to the code, it would be cool if you could see what language the project was written in and how many open issues the project has. Hopefully it would encourage people to take action.

Create a section for invited guests

Add a section to the event page for invited guests.

Add photos I sent to c4hrva-team@

Caption photos as follows. Link names to LinkedIn profiles.

Sheila Dugan: Digital Inclusion
Manager at EveryoneOn, Code for America Fellow. Virginia Governor's Fellow.

Waldo Jacquith: Open Data
Director of the US Open Data Institute. White House Champion of Change. Virginian.

More to follow.

list of member names

add a place for new members to add their name for the purposes of showing off who's involved and for github training.

Link challenges to details

Make the thumbnails and some words in the copy hyperlinks to details.

Need place to link first.

I'm not sure where/how we should curate details. Currently there are individual slide decks here in our CodeAcross 2014 G-Drive. We could also use HRVAwiki. Whatever we choose we need the ability to enable wide curation, i.e., updating HTML in Github for web pages does not scale.

Encourage non-coders to participate

Our brigade has gotten about 300% better since our designers joined. I don't think we could ever have enough of them. We could also use some internet savy volunteers who don't know anything about coding or graphic design but can edit hrva wiki, test out the bus app, or trade ideas for beer at meetups. I don't think our landing page gets that message across.

Add open data activities from CfA CodeAcross page to our event page and prioritize

CfA has three well defined and structured activities around open data that we should feature on our event page(s) and at the event itself. If feasible, i.e., doesn't make a tl;dr mess, add these to our page and feature them at the tops of the Challenges and Activities sections. (Maybe also reshuffle the others, too, to share time at the top.) List the Open Data Inventory and Open Civic Data Scraper as Activities and the Open Data Policy as a Challenge.

Change all "Sponsor" to "Donate"

Sponsor implies a promise of something in return for a contribution. We are not promising anything in return. We will prominently thank them in public. We can articulate what we mean by "prominently thank" but it's not a contract, ex:

  • logo on web site
  • logo on mailers
  • signage at events
  • public thank you during event and in social media

Civic Hacking Definition

Onapha: also
on "civic hacking"
in the paticipation thing
should be underline and link to its definition
n

Bootstrap source has been modified, isn't using minified, and is outdated (3.0.0)

I was attempting to help our page load by updating bootstrap to 3.1.1 and using CDN, when I ran into these issues:

  • Our self-hosted bootstrap 3.0.0 version has been modified: Anti-patern. All mods should go in main.css as it loads after bootstrap.css. We now have the painful task of running diff on our current boostrap.css and pulling changes out to main.css (if we ever want to update bootstrap).
  • We are hosting bootstrap source, when we shouldn't be. Faster to use CDN minified version: http://www.bootstrapcdn.com

Styling issues

@cosmicmeow

remove all things in " " and make them different color or weight avoid quotation marks make the site looks fishy

also the link in the Challenges shouldn't be blue can't see it

the grey highlight for skillsets in the activiies section should be either lighter or darker it's blending in too much with the blue

Change speaker text and link to bios

Sheila:
Sheila Dugan will talk about digital literacy and EveryoneOn, where she is responsible for communicating their mission to get everyone online.

Waldo:
Waldo Jaquith will tell us why open government data and civic hacking matter and how our local governments and citizens can use open data to improve their lives.

Andreas:
Andreas Addison will share stories from inside the Office of the Mayor at City Richmond, where he is dedicated full time to civic innovation.
