Plays tunes using beep.

Beeptune plays a simple tune file using the primitive system beep. A tune file simply contains lines of musical pitches and their durations. You can write a tune file for "twinkle twinkle little star", for example, and play it using beeptune. Beeptune cannot play chorus or chords.

Beeptune is lightweight perl script and can be run in a console. It can be used to convey many bits of information in situations where the user cannot (or does not wish to) read from the screen. For example, it could be used in linux distributions for the blind, in debugging services and boot scripts, or as a poor man's alarm for notebook battery low power.

And finally, it's just fun. Theoretically, it could be used to create a perfect soundtrack for the ASCII art version of Star Wars :-)

Beeptune 讓你用系統的陽春喇叭播放簡單的樂曲, 像是小星星之類的。你可以用純文字編輯器建立一個簡單的 .tune 格式檔, 內含一對對的音符及其長度, 然後就可以用 beeptune 播出 呆呆的 質樸的單聲道嗶聲音樂。 Beeptune 不能播放合音/和絃。

Beeptune 是一支極輕量的 perl 程式, 在終端機上就可以執行。有時候使用者可能無法 (或不想) 從螢幕讀取資訊, 這時可以考慮用 beeptune 來傳遞很多 bits 的訊息。諸如盲人版的 linux、 除錯各種伺服器及開機 scripts、或是窮人版的 「筆電電池用盡警告器」 之類的場合, beeptune 都可能派得上用場。

不管有沒有用, 總之好玩嘛。 也許拿它來幫 ASCII 版的星際大戰電影 配樂會很搭 :-)
