mall-theme's Issues

Odd breaks in People Item titles on items/browse

@kimisgold is there much that can be done about the odd ways that item title words are broken up in tablet size responsiveness?

Seems that all words shift well with 2 people across (phone screen size), but it's the tablet size with 5 people across where the weird breaks occur.

Map redesign

@sheilabrennan, @mlbest, @mebrett,

I completely reorganized the map to try to resolve a number of issues. Please revisit it and let me know if you find this to be an improvement on the whole, or I'll roll it back to the old version.

Change Shape, Size of People Cameos

@kimisgold Would it be possible to change the narrow oval cameo thumbnails for people to rectangular outline that take up a little bit more of the page?

Reason: we are each finding the ovals to be too narrow and a little small, and that ovals don't quite match with the boxiness of the rest of the site design.

Also, it feels like there is a lot of white space in between each thumb.

Share button

@kimisgold do you need any info from us on that?

Rather than using multiple icons, could we use one that denotes sharing with social networks via Add This and then gives user choices?

Exhibit tag path needs updating

@kimisgold
On /explorations/show/ pages, the tags displayed under
"Explore other questions about…" heading are still going to exhibits/browse?tags=commerce+%26+trade and not to explorations/browse?tags=...

as a result, users clicking on the tags are sent to a 404.

Event era dropdown stays open

When using the dropdown to jump to an era in the event browse page, the dropdown stays open even when you click outside of it. You have to actively click back in the dropdown to tell it to go away, which is unlike any dropdown I've interacted with in the past.

Increase font size of Discover text on homepage

@kimisgold can you increase the font size of Discover heading in the orange box to be larger than the section headings inside and/or style it in another way so that it is a little more prominent on the page.

Since it at 18 and the sections in the box are 24, and it looks a little lost.

Getting back to maps after Selecting Filters confusion

Can the back arrow button, when selecting a filter, be more prominent?
Available in the Select Filters header block, or by graying out the other map nav (similar to how it works when clicking an item pinned to the map and the other nav is not accessible).

Map layer toggle obscures home icon on map view

This is true both in mobile view and on the computer.

When you're in a non-historic layer view of the map, there is a home button on the bottom left corner of the screen. However, once you activate a historic map layer, that home button is underneath the button to toggle the historic map layer on and off.

If you go back to era: none, you can see the home button, and users can always use the back button in their browser (if they have one), so it doesn't completely interfere with function, it's just a bit odd because you can see the layer of the buttons.

Search results page overlaying images and text

Just pointed out to me by a friend - search results page on both HNM live and sites using the Mall theme display with an odd overlap of text and image:

Happening for me in Chrome and Firefox

Search Results

If possible it could be helpful if search results had thumbnail images. This could help people decide what is best for what they are looking for, especially for he more abstract items that are about ideas or movements.

Footer

@kimisgold Can we use images for smaller screen and then a text & logo version for full view desktops?

@sharonmleon Can we get away with the RRCHNM & NEH logos in the footer rather than the standard text footer for smaller screens?

Guidance on Map heading to go to settings

@kimisgold
Would like to add some text in the blue header box on the /map page to more explicitly direct users to the map and item filters.

I'm up for your suggestions for the other ways to accomplish this.

Sample text, "Find historical maps" or "Browse by time" with an arrow or something pointing to the settings icon.

Scavenger Hunts

@kimisgold Scavenger hunts are loading slowly, seems to be b/c all of the media is loaded on the page at once.

Could we make each image and piece of audio/video it's own page? Users would then advance to the next page once they've listened or read.

We can help in the exhibit builder admin but wanted to check with you about design of pages, and your thoughts on over usability.

Event sort?

Past events are currently grouped by coverage era, but within that I'm not sure how they're sorting - I think it might be useful if within the eras they went chronologically (even if that means making an invisible sort field or three).

Share Icons obscure exhibit text on desktop

The share bar of icons shows up on the desktop on the left side of the content. In item browse pages, there's enough padding that you can read the text. On exhibits, however, the share icons overlap the text and obscure it.
