chimeraos's Issues

Can't install on GTX 1660 Super

Hello!

I've been able to install GamerOS on my old i7-3770 with GTX 960 easily following the standard installer, but I tried doing the same with my new Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1660 Super (nvme drive) and all I get is an unreadable blurry screen and at some point it gets stuck on a half blue screen.

It stops being usable after the initial installer menu (Install GamerOS, uefi bootloader, Reboot to system settings...).

Any help would be awesome.

Thanks again.

Create a live system for evaluation purposes

Because GamerOS requires a dedicated system, it is difficult for people to try it out. Enable users to try out GamerOS by creating a live system that can easily be installed to a USB drive.

Furthermore, the system should automatically mount other disks on the system and search out other Steam libraries and automatically add them to the Steam library (if possible) or link to an existing Steam folder.

Question: what to do if there are more than one Steam folders found? Perhaps link to the one that is the largest or has the most games installed?

Can't access desktop

I successfully installed gamer-os on my Alienware Steam Machine and it boots into Steam Big Picture Mode. But when I try to access the desktop it does nothing. So I tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 instead, but I could not login there because I don't know the password. So I rebooted the machine and tried to access the grub boot menu while booting (I wanted to select recovery mode to re-set the root password) but this also doesn't work. No matter what keys I press during boot, it never shows the grub boot menu (before, with SteamOS installed this was possible with Shift and Escape keys).

What am I doing wrong???

(I must admit that I have zero experience with Arch Linux, because I was only using Ubuntu and SteamOS in the past)

Auto-mount USB / external / network drives

Nice project! Love it. Thank you!
How can one mount external storage like USB, disks or network drives?
Despite my Linux knowledge I was not able to locate a mount point nor was I able to manually mount anything. So please, how to do that?

NVME Install Issues

When trying to install on NVME drive, installer gives error on mkfs.vfat for bad blocks and quits. Recommend fixing usage of mkfs.xfat because they drive was scanned and there are no bad blocks.

Black Screen During Install

When I boot into USB drive and select “install gamerOS”, text appears “SHA256” then goes black. I waited about 5 minutes but screen stayed black. What am I doing wrong?

Missing Pacman

With the latest version from 1/8 (gameros-2019.08.01-x86_64.iso) there seems to be an issue with Pacman. I get this error when i try to update and install openssh

error: failed to initialize alpm library (could not find or read directory)
(could not find or read directory: /var/lib/pacman/)

When i try to locate the directory for /var/lib/pacman/ it seems to be missing.

each update is 1.1 GB or more in size

Updates are distributed as full system images which are currently about 1.1 GB in size, but this could grow in the future. So even if there is only one file changed in the update, the user must download the full image to get the update.

We could publish and use image diffs between each version increment so there wouldn't be a need to download the full update when updating by a single version.

NTP support is still missing

I can't work on this right now, so I'm creating this issue for future reference. My system shows the wrong time and does not correct it. This is not a mature problem, but it is a bit annoying.

SteamOS uses chrony as NTP daemon. The configuration for Chrony is not that straightforward, but it should work better on systems which aren't always online. There is a page about it on the Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chrony

Debian / Ubuntu script

For those that are more into Debian and Ubuntu....
Would you provide a script that caters for those, please?
Thank you.

Problem during install/black screen

Hello,

I had a problem here during installation. So after i clicked "Install gamerOS" a text suddenly appeared:

SHA256 Validated

Retring version 243.0-1-arch
Running early hook [archiso_pxe_nbd1]
running hook [udev]
triggering event ...

and after that only a black screen appears and there is no process at all. I tried waiting for 10 minutes but the results remained the same. Is there a solution?

Karaoke game for GamerOS needed

Hi,
first, you guys are amazing for what you created! With the integration of the Retrogame-Emulators. Thank you for that in specific as Steam will probably newer release their integration.

However I do miss the support for an open source karaoke game. On steam there is none, or non that is comparable to what I'm searching for. To my knowledge there are two rather oldies but goldies:

  • Ultrastar Deluxe: An open Singstar clone https://usdx.eu
  • Performous: An open Rockband clone with integrated Singstar functionality. Apparently it builds on sources from Ultrastar http://performous.org

What speaks for them:

  • You can create your own karaoke songs or get them from known sources. Means you can enjoy jodeling your favourite songs wherever and whenever you want.
  • They are stable, just work and are well tested.
  • Supported on many platforms (Windows, Linux [Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora,...], Mac)
  • Their sources are all online on github or sourceforge...

Now the problem being, neither of those games is available as flatpak nor as snap or Appimage.
I do not think anyone will port them to flathub.

Would be really great if you can make this one exception for this game and let it install from e.g. AUR, please?

Regards, Tiger

Updates should happen automatically

The 1.0 release should probably contain an automatic updater. Currently gamerOS is lacking this. It should give feedback to the user about its progress as well. Plymouth would probably be the best way to do this.

Plymouth and UEFI support will need to be finished before that, though. After automatic updates have been enabled, no significant changes can be made to frzr anymore or it will break the feature.

Discord app

Maybe we could get Discord somehow installed there? It's available as arch package, as flatpack package too, and is in modern days essential for gaming at all. Would that be a big problem to implement?

GamerOS doesn't boot.

Following our conversation on reddit, after a third attempt the system is again successfully installed but fails to boot.

At boot time the message:
"Reboot and select the proper boot device, or insert Boot media in selected boot device and press enter"
is displayed.

I attach here the terminal output including all my executed commands during the installation, and the install.sh's output.
The terminal output is more complete (there's also a "lspci" in there) and includes specific error messages about the grub-install sequence. (from line 593)
script_output.log
terminal_output.log
Sorry about the weird characters, is still readable though.

AMD Vulkan packages are not installed

On my system using an AMD card (from lspci):

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X]

I couldn't start any Vulkan games because no AMD vulkan drivers were installed.
I went with what Arch Wiki recommends:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vulkan#Installation
and installed the following packages:

  • vulkan-icd-loader
  • lib32-vulkan-icd-loader
  • vulkan-radeon
  • lib32-vulkan-radeon

For checking/testing vulkan I also installed:

  • vulkan-tools

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vulkan#Installation

From what I can see so far, these packages are enough to solve the issue, at least for my particular card. Maybe also vulkan-intel could be considered for Intel graphics users.

But (and this might explain it) I also want to add that my card, which is a Radeon GCN 1.0 "Southern Islands" does not use by default the amdgpu driver, but radeon, so no Vulkan support by default.
To switch the card to the amdgpu driver, it has to be enabled explicitly.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU#Enable_Southern_Islands_(SI)_and_Sea_Islands_(CIK)_support
which I did in this case.

Maybe the Arch installation procedure is more fussy, sees this specific card and choose to not install the AMD Vulkan drivers since they're not needed by default, not sure here.
On the other hand (with amdgpu support enabled or not) on other distros tested so far, like SteamOS or Ubuntu, the AMD Vulkan drivers are installed regardless.

Login Issues

When BPM logs in, nothing but the BPM background is present. No, icons, menus, etc. If I pull my keyboard out the mouse cursor is there and I can here sounds when clicking mouse button, but nothing else visually.

/etc overlay established too late?

Some changes to /etc are not effective. Probably because the overlay is mounted to late in the process.

For example I cannot add a secondary hard drive to fstab. I can actually add it, but it is not mounted because fstab is read before the overlay is up. The problem is not about the directory, because I just created on in the home directory and I can mount it later on manually, but not on startup.

Another example is systemd services: I cannot enable a service. Again I can actually enable it in the way that the link is created, but it is not processed.

Bluetooth devices (including Xbox One S and DS4 controllers) not pairing correctly via SteamOS bluetooth settings

Upstream bug report for Steam:
ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#6756

A workaround to successfully pair a bluetooth device is to use bluetoothctl from the command line and follow the connection instructions here (no need for the xpad neo driver): https://atar-axis.github.io/xpadneo/#connection

If you have already attempted to pair the device in the UI, you must first run the remove <device id> command in bluetoothctl before following the instructions linked above.

Boot Screen

Not an issue, but a request. Is there a way to add the SteamOS splash screen when booting? I would rather see that than the current arch linux loading text.

No video output after install (using unraid)

I've installed gamer-os as a VM on my Unraid server with GPU and peripheral passthrough, install phase worked fine, but afterwards there is no video output on screen (only says "No Signal").

Other VM's work fine with the GPU passthrough so it's not issue with Unraid.

GPU is Radeon R9 280 3GB-VRAM.

Can't change Display resolution from detected default.

I have my steam machine connected to a 4K TV. But I'd rather have it set to 1080p. Unfortunately, after installation in the Steam Big Picture UI, the resolution option only allows me scale the borders, but doesn't give me any option for choosing another resolution.

How do I install using Wifi?

I use a notebook for work and I'm always connected to the wifi, I would like to know if it is possible to install without using a cable

srry for my bad english.
thx

Cpu governor

Cpu Governor seem to not be set to performance, shadow of the tombraider complains about it when I start up, and the performance is identical to my arch linux install with powersave governor set.

Instructions to install emulators

As a new gamerOS user, I don't know how to install emulators. The readme says:

play any game
out of the box support for playing NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PlayStation, Wii, Steam games and more (only Steam games are supported out of the box, emulators are pre-installed but currently require manual setup)

Maybe a emulators.md could contain instructions for the "manual setup" to help users?
Can be related to #24 (creating a website and putting instructions on the website)

BTW, thx for your work 😃

Since no desktop can not fix Resident Evil 2 Remake

Hello and good day all, I'm loving this OS, But one thing disliking is the no desktop version, Resident evil 2 can be played but one issue, It needs a DLL file added in so the cut scenes do not get stuck in a boot loop, With out access to a desktop to traverse to the games save file I and others got Jo way to correct that minor issue, And with RE3 fast approaching I'm willing to bet it will need that same file to run.

Any way to fix this?

[suggestion] Include openssh package

The openssh package is very small and could provide us some benefits:

  • Easier file transfer
  • Easier debugging
  • Running frzr-unlock won't be needed anymore to be able to run ssh

Of course, you wouldn't enable sshd by default, but if it was installed users would have the option to run sudo systemctl start sshd to run it without needing frzr-unlock and pacman.

Bluetooth Pairing

My controller unpairs from the system anytime I turn the controller off. I keep having to pair it every time I turn it on. Anyone else have this issue?

Updated kernel

Hi,

is there any plan to upgrade the kernel to Linux 5.5 soon? I need the most recent kernel for support of my RX5500xt. Or can I manually upgrade the kernel?

Login to terminal "authentication failure"

Hi,
I change with CRTL+ALT+F3 to the terminal.
A login with standard credentials (gamer/gamer) does not work.
Output: authentication failure

What am I doing wrong here?

ERROR: device 'LABEL=frzr_root' not found

I get the following error message at first boot after installation:

ERROR: device 'LABEL=frzr_root' not found. Skipping fsck.
mount: /new_root: can't find LABEL=frzr_root.
Your are now being dropped into an emergency shell.

Any quick fix I can do via the emergency shell?
