feed-sidebar's Issues

Folder containment for feed links

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I found that one of the more useful functions of the Wizz RSS reader that I
used before switching to your application was the ability to organise my
feed links into folders named for the subject or nature of the feed. I
could switch between the "work-related" folders and look at those feeds and
"personal" folders for lunchtime reading.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Feed Sidebar 4.1.2, Firefox 3.5.5, and Microsoft Windows XP Home v2002, SP3

Toolbar button does not appear

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Install version 3.1.6 to latest FF on Xubuntu using FF add-on manager

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect the toolbar button in the navigation toolbar.
It does not get added i.e. it is not there at all.
This is the button which opens up the sidebar i.e. equivalent to ctrl-shift-f

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Version 3.1.6
Firefox 3.0.6
Xubuntu 8.10
On an HP Mininote 2133 netbook FWIW.

Please provide any additional information below.

Also running following FF extensions:

Adblock plus 1.0.1
Download Statusbar 0.9.6.4
Foxmarks 2.7.2
Tab Mix Plus 0.3.7.3
Ubuntu FF mods 0.6

Have tried disabling all of the above and restarting FF, no change.

Have tried uninstalling feed sidebar and reinstalling, no change.

Have tried customising the navigation toolbar to check it wasn't hidden or
off the edge of the screen, doesn't appear to be.

Have tried changing the nav toobar buttons to small and then back again in
the FF customise toolbars dialogue, no change.

Have tried waiting to see if once feeds update it appears. It doesn't.

Feed sidebar otherwise works perfectly when called up with ctrl-shift-f. I
have 48 feeds currently FWIW.

Linux FF 3.5 with Feed Sidebar 4.0 - New RSS Articles are not appearing

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Have several livefeed bookmarks in your list
  2. install feed sidebar in Firefox 3.5
  3. Click 'update/refresh' Wait several hours. Click 'update/refresh'.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect to see new rss feed posts. Out of 31 feeds I have, only TWO are
showing new articles, and not all of those either. If I examine the
livefeed myself, it shows many new articles present.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OpenSuSE Linux v11.0, updated to FireFox 3.5 on July 1, 2009, installed
Feed Sidebar v4.0 from Mozilla Addons. Was using feed sidebar previously on
version FF3.0.11 successfully. (previous version of Sidebar though)

Please provide any additional information below.

Not sure what's changed really. Just not able to see new rss articles
using feed sidebar. Actually went to the trouble to try the other rss feed
'things' out there... ick! Hoping this is a simple typo or oops concerning
the 'seen/notseen' status or something similar.

As given above, am a seasoned user with your addon, very much enjoy it, no
problems or complaints until new v4.0 for FF3.5. {Sigh}

new feature: one-click "read" function

It would be great to have a button or area to mark an item as read with
only one click. It could be done with an extra symbol before or after the
item icon, or a middle click could be interpreted as the command "mark as
read".

I have the situation that I have many feeds to browse through, but I have
to read only few articles. While browsing through the item titles I cannot
mark them as uninteresting (so they would disappear) easily, but have to
use the context menu.

This feature would be very unintrusive if there was an extra option to
enable the behaviour I described above (middle click marks as read).

Thank you for your great extension! I use it every day!

Start-Up Website of Feed Sidebar always appears

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Whenever I open Firefox the Feed Sidebar Start-up Website appears. Is
there an option that this doesn't appear as I really don't need it everytime.
  2. Also, I always get the question if I want to subscribe to the "Latest
    Trending" Feed, which I don't.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
no start-up website from the Feed sidebar, no questions if I want to
subscribe to a feed

Feeds without permalinks are always marked as read

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Subscribe to a feed where each entry points to the same page. Like

  2. Visit one entry.
  3. Wait for an update.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Ideally, it would notify the user of any updates. Instead, it treats them
all as being read, no matter what the update time is.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Memory leak?

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. I have the following Addons installed: Adblock Plus 1.0.2, AVG Safe
Search 8.5, Download Statusbar 0.9.6.5, IE Tab 1.5.20090525 and Feed
    Sidebar 4.0
  2. When the Feed Sidebar is enabled FireFox's (version 3.5) memory
consumption rises with time until the program crashes. Whe I disable the
Feed Sidebar the problem ceases to exist. I am using Windows XP SP3.
    3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect FF3.5 to consume the same amount of memory for a given state in
which I don't open new tabs. Instead, FF3.5 memory usage explodes.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
WinXP SP3, FF3.5, Feed Sidebar 4.0

New item

Last version of feed sidebar. Last version of Firefox. I run Firefox under
Windows and Linux (same version). Problem seems to occur under both OS, but
following example is from Windows.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Subscribe to this feed : http://parisavant.com/index.php?x=rss
  2. Mark all as read
  3. Wait for feed update (every day 12 o'clock CEST)
  4. Update feeds

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The new item in the feed is not shown in the feed side bar.
If I disable the "Hide read items", the feed does not even show up.

I don't know if a error is silently ignored, if the problem comes from a
wrong history, or if the feed is not even taken into account be the side
bar. I install feed sidebar after subscribing to this feed. The problem
occurs with other feeds. Among the 22 feeds that I have subscribed to, is
"Hide read items" is unchecked, I only see 7 of them.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Type anything into the awesome bar, or
  2. Type into a field that has autocompletion data, or

correlation. Bug might be here or it might be with SQLite or XUL or whatever.

  2. Renaming LiveBookmarks folder in Bookmarks to e.g. NewsFeeds? The only

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

All I was seeing before - disappeared altogether - no feeds are shown at
all, even when "Show all" selected, update works but brings up no new
feeds, no old feeds. No feeds at all. Although it does say "updating 15
feeds" (correct number). I tried to clear up feedbar.cache & .sqlite files,
reloaded Firefox - no use.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Firefox 3.0.10, FeedSidebar 3.1.6 but started in 3.0.4, no change

Please provide any additional information below.

I got another LiveBookmarks addon called LiveClick and it's working all
right just not handy to operate on feeds in the menu, I really miss Feed
SideBar! And it stopped working long before I started looking for another

settings were stored somewhere, I have no idea where for a clean reinstall.
Any suggestions on how to get my feed in the sidebar back would be highly
appreciated!

New feeds pop-up won't disappear after Vista sleep mode

Hello, I've been using Feed SideBar for some time now, it's a great add-on
but I noticed a bug in version 4.0 which didn't seems to exist in previous
versions.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
When the computer goes out of Sleep Mode, if a new feed pop-up was
displayed while the computer was still in Sleep mode.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Normally the new feed pop-up should appear briefly in the lower right part
of the screen, and then disappear automatically after a few seconds.

Instead, when I come out of Sleep, all the new feed pop-ups appear in the
upper left corner of the screen where they stack on each other and do not
disappear, even if I click on the link. The links seems to work (it opens
Feed Sidebar), but the pop-up stays where it was and keeps staying on top
of every other window. The only way to get rid of it is to close Firefox.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Windows Vista Professionnal SP1, Firefox 3.0.11.

Please provide any additional information below.
I attach a screen capture of the upper part of the screen

  1. just wait a few hours and see the memory usage

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Firefox.exe uses about 1gb memory. With no feed sidebar, 2-300mb.

Move 'Mark All As Read'

"I've found that when right-clicking on an individual item title in a feed,
the placement of the "Mark all as read" context menu item is a bit awkward,
being right below the "Mark as read" item. I have several times hit the
"Mark all as read" item by accident. I'd like to request that the order of
the two be reversed (statistically, users are more likely to accidentally
hit on the bottom-most item in a small dropdown menu than on any other
item, and the consequences of accidentally hitting "mark as read" are less
severe than of hitting "mark all as read")."

Selected feed automatically open the linked webpage/full item description in tabs.

hello,

This is a request for feed sidebar, i like feed sidebar to open the
selected feed automatically in the browsers tab instead of the small
preview when you select a feed.

What is the expected output?

The output is similar to opera feed reader, when reading feeds in opera,
once you clicked a single feed, the article will automatically load. If you
don't mind, you can try opera@usb http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm,
so wont need to install opera, and see opera feed reader in action.

The total output would be the selected feed would automatically open in the
browser tab with a linked webpage or just the full item description.

Please provide any additional information below.

I request the feature because it will make reading feeds easier and less
clicking of the mouse.

thank you

XUL/HTML should be escaped

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Add http://www.glazman.org/weblog/dotclear/index.php?feed/rss2 as a feed
  2. Update feeds

What do you see?
The title of the newest update (at the time of writing)
shows " security".

What is the expected output?
The correct title of the blog post "<xul:iframe> security".

What version of the product are you using?
Feed Sidebar: 3.1.6
Firefox: 3.1b2

Please provide any additional information below.
I'm guessing this is as simple as escaping the < as < during rendering.

Suggestions

Feed Sidebar is almost perfect. It just has few glaring limitations...

It doesn't respect folder groups??? I have my Live Bookmarks in subfolders
of a "root" folder named Feeds, for example Sports, News, etc. Why doesn't
the Sidebar respect folder structure?

A "collapse all" and "expand all" feeds would be nice (especially because
of the current lack of folder support).

How about adding a button to toggle the display of read feed items? The way
it is now, I have to go into the options to turn off "hide read items" to
see them again.

One last suggestion would be to have the ability to easily view the actual
feed link, to act as a "all items" preview page like other readers do
(Sage, Brief, etc.).

Thanks

Couple of bugs in new version

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. allow feedsidebar to update
  2. select an item, then scroll down using cursor keys
    3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

  1. the update results in pop-ups around the screen that will not go away,
as described by GarryB in his 21 June review.
  2. would expect to see the next item summary in the bottom of the sidebar,
instead the item you had selected disappears, and you are returned to the
    feed header.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
4.0 on XP Professional (now back to 3.16).

Please provide any additional information below.

Hebrew characters in feed headings are unreadable

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Try adding a feed whose title is in Hebrew. Examples:
    http://www.haokets.org/rss.asp
    http://www.hagada.org.il/hagada/html/backend.php
  2. Open sidebar and look at the heading of the feed.

The expected output (for the first example above) is "העוקץ". Instead it
looks like this: "ÔâÕçå"
These aren't Hebrew characters. There seems to be some encoding issue here.
Note that the titles of blog entries, which are also in Hebrew, do appear fine.
Please also see the attached screenshot.

I'm using the new version 4.0 on WinXP.

Please note that this problem did NOT occur in the previous version of Feed
Sidebar.

Thank you for a great extension. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
NF

massive "notification bombardment", false information

On my Firefox 3.5.x / Mac OS X 10.5.x I often get neverending Growl
notifications from feedsidebar. It's really annoying because I cannot work
on a screen cluttered with notifications.
I am not really sure but I think the following steps will reproduce the
issue (but maybe not all conditions are necessary):

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. lots of tabs opened (the notifications will multiply when there are more
    tabs opened)
  2. a few feed subscriptions (again, multiplied notifications for more feeds)
  3. read most feeds
  4. wait for automatic feed updating
  5. enjoy hundred of thousands of notifications (with even false "new
    message count" numbers)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect exactly one notification for every feed having new (unread)
messages informing about the number of new messages.
Instead, I get many notifications (probably one message for every feed AND
tab) containing the number of unread messages of ALL feeds (see
screenshot). I also get notified of new messages in feeds where there are
no new messages.
It's clearly a feed sidebar bug as other notifications are shown correctly
(from Firefox and other Apps).

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Firefox 3.5.5 / Mac OS X 10.5.8, Growl 1.2, Feed Sidebar 4.1.2
(but appeared in earlier versions of every software involved, too)

Please provide any additional information below.
It seems to me that feed sidebar tries to update the feeds multiple times
during one automatic updating process. No data on that, just my feeling.

I think the problem also exists on Windows machines, but there, you can't
really see the issue as only one message is displayed at a time in the
internal Firefox notification bar, finally displaying the favicon and
heading of the newest updated feed with the total number of unread messages.

The screenshot shows an example – but think of the screen being completely
full of notifications, so that Growl has to wait a few seconds for older
messages to disappear to display the rest of the messages (waiting in
queue). Once it took like 30 seconds to display all notifications with a
display-time-per-message of about 3 seconds

Lockups during feed update

Last version of feed sidebar. Last version of Firefox. I run Firefox under
Windows and Linux (same version). Problem is the same under both OS.

While the feed sidebar is retrieving a feed, the whole Firefox is locked.
For example, scroll down of an open web page is impossible.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Open a web page that can be scrolled down
  2. Initiate a "Reload Feeds"
  3. Try to scroll while feed is being retrieved
The page does not scroll down until the current feed is loaded.

If feed loading is very fast, it is not really a problem. But, for example,
in case feed is unavailable, one has to wait for timeout.

It would be nice if feed loading would not block the whole firefox.

some feed updates not showing in the sidebar

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. any time I use firefox
    2.
    3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect to see unread feed items in the sidebar. Instead, for certain
feeds I get nothing. Certain feeds are updated as expected, others seem to
just get ignored by the sidebar. If I go into the live bookmarks, the
unread items are displayed as bookmarks, but they don't appear in the
sidebar. Feeds affected are, for example:
-New Yorker: Reporting and essays (but "Newyorker comment" feed works)
-Boondocks at ArcaMax publishing (but Doonesbury at ArcaMax works)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
4.1 with Firefox 3.5 on Mac 10.5.7

Please provide any additional information below.
this erratic behaviour has been going on for a few months, at least.

no feeds with FF 3.5

Hello,

since a few weeks, all of my RSS feed from Google news are not working
anymore. No messages are retrieved. In the FF error log I see a lot of
messages like

'FEEDBAR: TypeError: itemObject.uri.match(/url=(https?://.*)$/i) is null'

Some other feeds which are not using https are working fine. I'm using FF
3.5.2.

FeedSidebar accessibility fixes

Patch from Marco Zehe:

"A number of people in the blindness community have asked me about how to
get a simple, intuitive feeds extension that does things for them similarly
to IE 7: Get the feeds in a tree and how they can discern read from unread
feed items etc.

FeedSidebar is IMO the perfect choice. However it has a few accessibility
issues:

  1. Some controls in the Options file aren't properly labelled. I
    corrected those easily.
  2. It is not possible to open the feed items using the keyboard. I
implemented a possible solution in the attached patch, but am not happy
with this approach. Perhaps you have a better idea! The idea is to do this,
similar to what Firefox does in general:
    1. Enter opens a feed item in the current tab.
    2. Ctrl+Enter opens the current feed item in a new tab.
    3. Shift+Enter opens the current feed item in a new window.

The above are taken directly from Firefox, where Enter opens a link in the
current tab, Ctrl+Enter opens it in a new tab, and Shift+Enter opens it in
a new window."
