expunge.io's Issues

Form submission page language

"After you submit this form, a lawyer from LAF Chicago will contact you as soon as they can. They will look into your record to confirm that you are eligible for expungement, and then they will guide you through the rest of the petitioning process!

Change to:
"After you submit this form, a lawyer from LAF Chicago will attempt to contact you at the phone number you provided. They will try to help you confirm that you are eligible for juvenile expungement, and then they will help you navigate the rest of the petitioning process! Please note: Submitting your form on this site does not create an attorney-client relationship with LAF."

updated language on form submission page

New language from further conversations with supervisors:
"After you submit this form, a lawyer from LAF Chicago will make an attempt to contact you at the phone number you provided to try to help you confirm that you are eligible for juvenile expungement. Please note: Submitting your form on this site does not create an attorney-client relationship with LAF."

A/B Testing

Carrying this thread over from the email discussion. The question at hand was whether or not to tweak the site based on Google Analytics or feedback from users.

If this is something you'd like to pursue, I'd recommend taking a look at Optimizely. It's a simple service that lets you A/B test a website:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S0IrbwpfzE

Spelling error

Misdemeanor on the page that says "What offense were you found delinquent of?" is misspelled.

increase capacity for legal aid

involve more pro bono lawyers - has anyone reached out to CGLA about directly helping those who submit forms via expunge.io? any other pro bono orgs in Chi?

we will also need to discuss how best to divvy the expunge.io forms & manage the workflow

Student Feedback

set up IDK page(s)

-what is the call to action for people who don't know details? get RAP sheet or call help desk?
-need to set up separate wufoo form for those who don't know, for better sorting. what do we tell them after filling out the form?

Hyperlinks on landing page

I just checked expungeio a minute ago and there are 5 hyperlinks on the landing page. The words hyperlinked are "happened" "arrest" "juvenile record" "back" and "juvenile record" again. The "juvenile record" hyperlink sends you to a records search pay site. Can we take these links down immediately and find out who put them up in the first place?

Chris

adding info at "you're not eligible" page

Make sure to tell folks:
"Even though this particular court case isn't eligible for juvenile expungement under current laws, if you have other juvenile arrests or juvenile court cases, those may still be able to be erased!"

  • info on calling legal aid with any doubts

Get arrest record instructions inside/outside Chicago (step 2)

People must use where they were arrested to figure out what to do:
Arrested by CPD can get "juvenile rap sheet" (3510 S Michigan)

Any other law enforcement agency (for example, Calumet City or Cicero): You need your juvenile "arrest record"--date and charge of each arrest--NOT "police reports." Call the law enforcement agency that arrested you and ask how to get your "juvenile arrest record" or "juvenile arrest history" from their records. If they tell you they won't give it to you, call the Juvenile Expungement Help Desk at 312-229-6359."

Internet Explorer fix

I used BrowserStack to view the site in old Internet Explorer. The other day I thought that fixing the site in old copies of Internet Explorer would be due to "inline-block". I was wrong, but it's the same fix.

Similar to the example on http://stackoverflow.com/a/17440880 the top menu can be fixed with:

<!--[if lte IE 7]>
<style type="text/css">
  .nav li {
      display: inline;
      zoom: 1;
      margin: 0 10px;
  }
</style>
<![endif]-->

Their example uses * to limit the changes to IE7 and you could add _ for IE6, but putting it inside an HTML-if is a bit less hack-ish. The margin keeps them from running into each other when you change the layout.

Also the button doesn't pop out as much in IE - you could add CSS in this block to make it underlined or colorful.

add to FAQ page

We need to add something about how being found guilty in juvenile court is not a criminal conviction. What do you think about the text below?

Q: Is my juvenile record a criminal conviction?
A: No. In Illinois, you cannot be convicted of a crime in juvenile court. Juvenile court is separate from (adult) criminal court. Even if you were "found guilty" in juvenile court, that is not a criminal conviction, and you do not have to reveal it on job applications. If you think a job has seen your juvenile record, contact the Juvenile Expungement Help Desk at 312-229-6359.

translation

@renemarcelo I've been working on translation for a few other projects, but not in Rails before. If you're working on the actual translation, I can look at the i18n code or connecting to a service like Transifex.

need to sort ppl who have juvenile records outside cook county

I think there are 2 options:

  1. incorporate this into the branches of the question tree (e.g. "were you arrested in Cook County? Y/N") then redirect to different wufoo forms accordingly
  2. add "is your record in cook county?" to the wufoo form

But this needs some more thought out discussion...
-we need to figure out who would deal with records outside cook county
-Sharlyn, approx what proportion of the ppl filling out the expunge.io wufoo form have records in cook county vs outside of cook county?

New language for http://www.expunge.io/FAQ

After I find out I am eligible to apply for juvenile expungement in Illinois, what do I have to do?

Remember that free legal aid (link to legal aid page) is available to help you complete the process! Use it! To petition for juvenile expungement, you will need to:

Get your juvenile arrest history (or "rap sheet")
Fill out court forms
Submit your forms to the appropriate court

Where do I get my RAP sheet? (can we just make this the same as the step 2 info? Including providing the info for non-CPD arrests)

For records in the city of Chicago, go to:

Records and Services Division of the Chicago Police Department:
3510 S Michigan, Chicago IL 60653
(312)745-5508
Mon-Fri 8am-12pm

Ask about open juvenile cases at end of question tree before saying yes eligible

After someone determines they are eligible age- and offense-wise, they still are not able to file for juvenile expungement unless all other juvenile cases are closed (including probation). So, we have to ask if they have any open cases!

New last page before submitting eligible Wufoo form:
"Do you have any open juvenile cases? A case is "open" if you are on probation or parole for it."
Yes-->go to not yet eligible page: "You will be eligible when your current cases closes, including the end of any probation or parole." (and provide all the same info on confidentiality and employment rights, etc.)
No-->Send to eligible form
IDK--> Instruct to call legal aid (sorted by county)

button for social workers, family members?

Multiple people have suggested that expunge.io should be a tool for people who know people with juvenile records (e.g. family, social workers), as much as it is a tool for people who have juvenile records themselves. I think the best/simplest way to address this would be to add another big fat action button, so that on the landing page there are two big buttons - one for 'i have a juvenile record' and one for 'i know someone who has a juvenile record' w/ the latter button leading to slightly different resources

The downside though is that this would add additional content to an already-cluttered landing page; making the app more inclusive w/ two buttons would come w/ the cost of making the app less simple/focused. I think I've spent too much time on this app to evaluate this kind of cost/benefit in design w/ fresh eyes.

Thoughts, anyone?

Move from form submission in step 1 to prompt people to start step 2

Hi Cathy! So in prepping for the outreach and increased use of Expunge.io, I know we talked about moving people directly from submitting their forms into step 2 instructions on getting arrest information. I tested the form submission now and just saw the page that says "Great! Thanks for filling out my form!". Can we have it instead load the step 2 instructions (http://www.expunge.io/step2) only maybe with a headline like "get started now!" at the top of the page? I think to be effective and getting people to take action and not wait for a response, this page needs to immediately follow the form submission.

explainer on difference between juvenile records & adult records

Thinking of putting together a comprehensive, clear, simple & accessible explanation of the differences between juvenile records & adult records (e.g. what they are, what the consequences are, who can see them, etc), as this seems to be a very common point of confusion. Possibly as a standalone webpage that we can link to from expunge.io. Thoughts?

Clarification of fee

"It costs $124 to expunge a single arrest, plus an extra $64 for each additional arrest. " so says the FAQ page.

I understand this to mean court / filing fees, but it doesn't say so.
Clarification might also benefit other language comprehension.

-R

Sharlyn to add more info to "not yet eligible" page

Info on confidentiality/juv record is NOT a criminal record in Illinois/most employers can't see juv records/employers in Illinois cannot use mere arrests or dismissed cases/if denied a job based on juvenile record, ask for copy of background check and call JEHD to see if employer should have been able to see your record.

Step two bottom of page hidden

Need to add padding so link to next step is visible at bottom of page, currently social sharing overlay overlaps.

question tree for felonies

Continuing the discussion from email

-Since the felony cases are only about 10% (or less?) of total arrests, putting the 'eligible' form on http://www.expunge.io/complicated shouldn't increase the total # of form responses by too much. It wouldn't be capturing everyone coming through expunge.io, b/c there are still 'not eligible' pages that don't have forms - the only way to get to http://www.expunge.io/complicated is to click 'felony' at http://www.expunge.io/q3 (after already having clicked arrest resulting in court case > case not dismissed > found delinquent)
-For the 'not yet' pages, I think it is a good idea to add the prompt to tell users to check their other arrests. I can add that. Sharlyn, can you provide a finalized snippet of text to add to http://www.expunge.io/notyet1, http://www.expunge.io/notyet2, http://www.expunge.io/notyet3, & http://www.expunge.io/notyet4?
-I haven't built out the pathways for felony cases (these are the ones that lead to http://www.expunge.io/complicated) mostly because it requires a lot of changes and I haven't found the time. However, I do have a concern about building out the pathways for felonies: as we add more specific questions, there is an increased likelihood that a user would answer at least one question incorrectly, and I wouldn't want to lose people that way. Thoughts? Perhaps we can set up a separate 'felony' form and then I can embed it on http://www.expunge.io/complicated for your own sorting purposes? That way, people charged with felonies can fill out a form instead of calling, and we don't lose anyone who might be eligible for expungement. And then when I find the time to build out the entire question tree for felonies, we can keep the felony form on all the result pages so that we don't lose anyone due to answering questions incorrectly?
