Overall, I think the online form is easy to navigate and follow. I didn’t even need the instruction page, except when I was trying to troubleshoot the glitch. So even the PI’s will be able to figure it out. It was slower for me than using the word doc version, because there are so many fields you have to click through (rather than just dumping it all into Word). So it took a while to work through all of the fields. And some of that extra time was trying to figure out little quirks (like why it wasn’t saving the unit description). Also, uploading my CSV didn’t work at first, because it didn’t recognize the commas between fields for some reason. So the portal insisted there was just one column of data (whose header was AAAAaaaall of my column headers). I had to delete, re-save the CSV, and reupload it a few times to get it to finally notice the commas. I assume it’s an Excel issue, and eventually it sorted itself out. (But maybe being able to upload a tab-delimited txt file would be a good 2nd option…?) Now that I’m familiar with it, it’ll go faster next time. And an upside is that I don’t have to keep an eye out for updates to the Word doc. (I always send you the word doc and hope that it’s still the right one, haha.)
One other thing I noticed: every time I filled out the Word doc for you, I would start to paste in the abstract from the paper, and then read your note about how we can’t use the published abstract from a journal article. (Copyright issue, I assume.) If that’s still a concern, you might want to put that note into the form. I know I’ll forget by the next time I have a dataset to submit.
