to be clear: those don't cause failures in the make mode on envrionments that can build everything, But it does hinder cabalization of the pieces of the code base

Yes, I think so. @cartazio, out of interest what coding standards/linting tools are you referring to when you talk about hindering cabalization?

Ghc warns about tabs by default. Nothing more substantive than high volumes
of low signal warnings
