Mac missing app icons about dotfiles HOT 7 CLOSED

I found the problem. The following command leads to the problem.

It works fine without the command.

That is not something I've seen before... looks like a corrupt Thumbs.db.

You could try something like this:

# create a backup location (preferable to deleting files, just in case)
mkdir ~/dbbackup
# move db for dock (could just delete these, but...)
mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db ~/dbbackup/
# restart Dock
killall -HUP Dock

Then run launchpad again. If it worked (or at least didn't appear to make anything worse), you can cleanup the ~/dbbackup directory.

@atomantic it's happening to me as well, tried to follow your suggestion, but no luck. :/
Also, when I click on some apps that still have icons, they get lost.
Happened to:
Maps, App Store, Notes
No effect:
System Preferences, Calendar

Well, I've updated my OS X and I can see the icons again!

System Version:	macOS 10.13.5 (17F77)
Kernel Version:	Darwin 17.6.0
Boot Volume:	Macintosh HD

I had the same problem but no pending OS update. I found a "stupid" fix: opening the Applications folder and dragging all affected applications to the desktop to create aliases. This seems to reset all the icons. The aliases can then be deleted. The system needed to be reset for it to stick.
