This American Life took a story from Planet Money and fleshed it out a bit. In the story they talked about committee positions by folks in congress and senate and how it effects their fundraising:

1. I don't think they controlled for obvious variables like time of service or public popularity. For example, if you are on a committee, part of that is because you have been there for a while I assume. If we wanted to determine the effect of positions on fundraising we would have to account for some of these. Might make for an interesting post. (sunlight foundation did this study)
2. Chairmanship same thing
3. Socialism of committee positions and chairmanships. If someone is on a committee then they are expected to raise money and send it to the party to spread it around. That seems like an interesting topic.
