referencepanel's Issues

Soil temp

I have been using Soiltemp in APSIM classic for quite a while. Tthe major difference in soil temperature simulated by Soiltemp and that simulated by soilN module is when soil is covered by the crop canopy. Soil N based simulated temperature is much higher (>2-5oC) indicating it is not able correctly simulate soil temp when radiation reaching soil is reduced - if I correctly remember. Soil temperature is used in predicting aflatoxin risk in peanuts and the values predicted by soil temp were more realistic.

He raised the review process. RP happy with @hol353 reviewing them prior to being released via the YouTube Channel. Raised a question in relation what other topics should be made available via this format. What else should one have completed before being able to do "Advanced Training" ACTION: @sarahcleary to commence GitHub issue seeking input into topics for online training

@sarahcleary provided short update on APSIM week. Noted that the AI SC requested the RP to think about structure/format of APSIM Symposium to include the “wider selling” of APSIM to commercial/funders. Who should be invite them to present/attend - any of the AI commercial partners.

8 AI Steering Committee Meeting

AI SC Report - AI funded software position

Discussions around the AI funded position. @peter-devoil noted that without the position, APSIM Next Gen development would be 12 months behind where it is, with regard to the software fixing. However, looking forward, need to review more strategically what is happening with the API. Strategically need to look at the software space as the gap could widen if parties don't work together.

@Keith-Pembleton requested feedback on the following issue: #10 - either via GitHub or phone/email directly.

@APSIMInitiative/reference-panel discussed the benefit which could arise with travel budget was provided to allow people to visit (short-long term) other collaborators to allow Cross-Pollination. This may have more of an impact on APSIM than funding specific projects.

Move APSIM Classic into continuous release
Comment from Pete deV - For the forseeable future, the Apsim Classic release will remain at 7.10, and links to upgrade to the latest bugfix are available to developers only via the bootleg system on bob. This means registered users don't have a) knowlege of available bugfixes, and b) access to them. I'm proposing some sort of notification system to registered users: some of these bugfixes have serious impact.

This may entail a list of registered users being kept on bob so that when (if?) a bugfix release is built, users are notified.

The RP may wish to discuss how this continually changing version should be "referenced".

    Process comment

Hamish questioned the issue that major issues were being identified too late in the process. Does the process need modificaiton? It was agreed that the engagement of the AI RP reps earlier on in the GitHub review, will alleviate or at least minimise this issue. AI RP to see an eye on this issue to see if it continues.

2.3 Update from AI SC meeting in March

ACTION Hamish to organise to meet Graeme in person when visiting in August to work through documentation.

2.4 Update on Actions from the RP Strategy Session - Feb 2019

ACTION Outstanding actions to be included in agenda of June 2019 RP Meeting; Completed actions to be reported on. @sarahcleary and @Keith-Pembleton to work on offline.

2.5 Update on Actions from AI-PFR Workshop - Nov 2018

  • Hamish led the discussion as the RP worked through actions from AI-PFR Workshop. Actions were as follows:

Bootleg Version - APSIMInitiative/APSIMClassic#1757 and APSIMInitiative/APSIMClassic#1759

@hol353 – provided an update – Issues with migrating – WIP.

Labels for APSIM Initiative Issues

It was noted that administering labels would be a significant burden. RP reviewed purpose - to enable users to better engage with GitHub on issues that are relevant to them. Preferably get sense email notifications.
Labels are not the answer - in most cases can use the search bar. Setting up labels for things for non-searchable terms like winter cereals, legumes, would not result in notifications. Someone would need to set up the labels and continually monitor this - not a good use of time.

Agreed to utilise the team structure. Limit to a small number of teams, at least initially, to see how it works.

ACTION: Try max 5 teams initially. @APSIMInitiative/reference-panel to nominate teams in GitHub issue (by 11/10). Subscribe, join the teams you want.
In each team, RP team members to tag team in to new and existing issues. If not complete, will ask @hol353 and @hol430 to help tag relevant issues

Discussion on leveraging resources between members

Action from Feb 2019 RP Strategy Session
Noted that it is difficult to fund implementation. Science development is easier to source funding, but without the implementation step, the science can not be utilised in APSIM. Impact is low.
Enli and Hamish to discuss leveraging resources including PhD students.

AI-PFR Potential Opportunities

AI to consider the following five areas of potential future focus/priority

Developing horticultural/perennial tree crop functionality in APSIM.
Climate change response functionality in APSIM.
Developing multi-functional landscape capability in APSIM.
Precision agriculture.
Considering high performance computing needs and potential implications.

Recommendation - First step would be to collate what everyone is doing.

To ensure APSIM Infrastructure can deal with the high performance computer. Keith to start Github repository

ACTION RP agreed to review each of these areas as part of the review of the Development Plan. Each home org would provide interest, synergy as part of the process of developing the plan for 19/20.

#15
Update provided. Bob is working
ACTION: @peter-devoil to update issue summarising the update.

Bootleg versions
Discussion around bootleg models (models that haven’t gone through the Reference Panel) and whether they should be made available.
It was noted that this had been discussed at length a number of years ago - 3+. At the time, a decision was made not to include them in the standard release of APSIM. Instead a special bootleg version of APSIM was made available via Bob’s web page. This was prior to APSIM Next Gen and when APSIM Classic was being updated/maintained.

It was agreed that for APSIM Classic, bootleg models should be made available in the standard release of APSIM, otherwise development in this space won't be able to be shared. This means that the bootleg installation of APSIM can be discontinued and we can move to a single released installation.

Requirement - make it clear that if the bootleg models are made available, these models are not supported, have not been reviewed by the RP and have not been validated through the rigorous process required for APSIM 'official' models.

Only for APSIM Classic. Single release of APSIM Classic – differentiate validated and non-validated release

ACTION: @hol353 and @peter-devoil to start an "non-validated" category/tool box and work through this process.

4 Outstanding Actions

No updates.

ACTION: @sarahcleary to provide a list of Actions from AI SC meeting once AI SC minutes were complete.

Discussion on AI SC GitHub feedback leading to the potential of setting up filtering mechanisms due to the large number of GitHub notifications.
ACTION: @HamishBrownPFR to look into any filtering mechanisms able to be used on GitHub - ‘teams’, label, tagging etc.. Possibly set up teams for different areas. Any software to help manage GitHub?

7 Science Chats
