homeslice's Introduction

About

Homeslice.in started as a static page to compare two timezones and has evolved into a much more full-featured client side app.

I used Moment Timezone which uses The Time Zone Database as the source of city timezone data:

The Time Zone Database (often called tz or zoneinfo) contains code and data that represent the history of local time for many representative locations around the globe. It is updated periodically to reflect changes made by political bodies to time zone boundaries, UTC offsets, and daylight-saving rules.

As of March 2023 the original 10 year timezone data file was out of date. I've updated it so hopefully it's good for another decade or more.

Adding Cities

If you'd like to request a city, please check out the list of timezones in the database. Sending me the zone name, e.g. America/Los_Angeles is super helpful.

homeslice's Issues

Time Zone Abbreviation

It would be good to have a option to see time zone abbreviations.

Example: I was asked to conf call at 10pm EST but didn't have a City/Location.

Pre-populate via URL

One option of http://worldchatclock.com/ that I really appreciate, is the ability to link to an already filled out clock. It seems like it should be possible to do something similar here.

I do not fancy myself as a javascript developer, but since this is a feature I would really like, I'm willing to give it a shot. Do you have any suggestions on how you would like to see it implemented, or any hints into the code on where it should hook in? It seems like the core bit of the code is all contained in here https://github.com/andytlr/homeslice/blob/gh-pages/assets/app.js

Add Brisbane

Mel/Syd will go forward an hour soon but Bris will stay the same.

Unique URL

Would it be possible for the URL to change dependent on the timezones added so the link can become shareable between people? For example, I could create a set of timezones and then share the link with my team in those timezones so they don't have to recreate it?

+45m timezones (SRSLY)

  • Nepal
  • Chatham Islands, New Zealand

Maybe wrap it in a thing that if +00_0_0 isn't zero, use that as the offset.

Fingerprint assets

Something (maybe as simple as a shell script) to add a hash to, or increment a number on, asset filenames and their references in index.html and homeslice.appcache

Are all timezones included?

I tried adding 'Cape Town' or the 'South African time zone' but could not find it in the list. Are all timezones included? If not, can you add this one?

Alternate name for UTC +5:30?

UTC +5:30 is the time zone for India and Sri Lanka. Right now, the city name for the time zone is Colombo, but it might be easier for end users if you used a better-known city like Mumbai (the most populous city in the time zone) or New Delhi (possibly the best-known city in the time zone). Thanks.

Need better way to find unknown time zones

Hey there!

Your tool seems neat - very handy for global companies :) The only problem is that I don't know what cities share what time zones across the world - it would be great if you either had options like

  • UTC -5
  • UTC -4
  • UTC -3
  • etc.

So I could add those.

Alternatively, it would be nice to add a search bar where you entered the city and the time zone came up for you. This would allow the headers in each column to reflect the actual location - for example, I need to know the times in:

  • San Diego, California
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • London, England
  • Cape Town, South Africa

And would like those cities to show at the top of each column. Maybe even allow me to add nicknames to each column so I know which company is what at a glance :)
