hikmah-academic-quarto's Introduction

Hikmah Quarto templates

ḥikmah (حكمة): Arabic; n. wisdom; cf. House of Wisdom

I’ve been using custom LaTeX templates (based in part on Kieran Healy’s template) for years. With the advent of Quarto, I decided to clean up my templates, simplify them, and Quarto-ify them. Yay.

  • Nice fancy PDF (hikmah-pdf)
  • Manuscripty double-spaced PDF (hikmah-manuscript-pdf)
  • Manuscripty double-spaced Word (hikmah-manuscript-docx)
  • Manuscripty double-spaced OpenDocument (hikmah-manuscript-pdf)
  • Reviewer response memo (hikmah-response-typst)

This repository is really meant as an example of how to create Quarto templates and formats. Fork it, copy it, and adjust it all you want! Use it as a way to learn how to make your own templates.

Installation

Run this command to install the templates in your Quarto project:

quarto add andrewheiss/hikmah-academic-quarto

Features

(will be documented better soon!)

  • Bibliography generation with both biblatex and biblatex-chicago
  • Support for Quarto’s complex author/affiliation schema
  • Fancy title block
  • Epigraphs
  • Title page in manuscripty PDF
  • Ability to move floats and notes to the end of the document in manuscripty PDF
  • Styles for peer review response memos
  • Lots of other stuff that I’ll document later

hikmah-academic-quarto's Issues

Issues with rendering the template?

Thank you for creating this great template!

I cloned the repository and tried to render the template file as a basic check, but it isn't working. It looks like Quarto can't find the generated .tex file from the second pass through XeLaTeX, but I'm not sure what's causing this. I haven't had a similar issue with other templates.

Below is the error message I receive:

Spacing for tables with lists leads to overcrowding of text

I absolutely love this template!

I did want to bring to your attention, though, that the environment created for tables with lists in them can overcrowd the text in the lists, particularly if the text for the list item wraps to the next line.

include-in-header.tex

% Remove left margin in lists inside longtables
% https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/378190/11851
\AtBeginEnvironment{longtable}{\setlist[itemize]{nosep, wide=0pt, leftmargin=*, before=\vspace*{-\baselineskip}, after=\vspace*{-\baselineskip}}}

Installation instructions

Cool templates! For installation, to get the templates into an existing repo, I found that this worked:

quarto install extension andrewheiss/hikmah-academic-quarto

In your instructions, you said to do this:

quarto add andrewheiss/hikmah-academic-quarto

(but that didn't work for me)

Usage

Might it help to include some usage instructions, e.g. for the YAML header:

format:
  hikmah-pdf: default

Or for the terminal:

quarto render article.qmd --to hikmah-pdf

(I think)
