• Circe has less boilerplate to work, thanks to auto codec derivation, but it is slow to compile; zio-json has more boilerplate, but it is faster to compile.
• Circe based on Shapeless, while zio-json is based on Magnolia.
• Circe has support for accumulation errors, while zio-json does not.
