Drop-Downfelder beim Dimensions-Tab

Die Drop-Downfelder in diesem Tab sind als solche nicht gleich erkennbar, das könnte evtl. zur Verwirrung führen bei manchen Usern...

choosing countries is essential

I think it is essential that one can choose which countries to look at/compare at since not everybody is interested in every country.
(wm)

functionality depends on audience

Audience: For me, the big question is who we envisage using this and for what purposes. A related question is whether we try to offer something to all audiences, or whether we focus on meeting the demands of one specific target audience. This will influence many if not most of the rest of the decisions to made about the visualisation tool. Initially, I thought this would be for the general public with an interest in careers (how they compare to their fellow nationals and vs other countries) and managers/HR (how do my employees at home and overseas view their careers). However, this seems to go beyond this group (too far perhaps?) and seems to be a tool well suited to teachers, consultants and researchers.

AuthaGraph World Map

One big thing: There has been debate over the last several years on how best to most accurately represent the countries of the world on a two dimensional map. The AuthaGraph World Map is thought to be the most accurate ever made and it won a prestigious design award in 2016. Not sure how easy it is to change maps but this could keep our depiction of the world cutting edge. Here’s are two links regarding the Authagraph: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/d-brief/2016/11/03/most-accurate-world-map/ and http://www.authagraph.com/category/projects/description/?lang=en . For what it matters, I think we could safely shave off Antarctica if we use this depiction.

define target audience

Target audience: for me, interested career practitioners (HR people, career consultants), policy makers (e.g. educational policy), interested laypersons (e.g. parents), and other scholars

Cluster option on the Map tab

And, I’d also like to have a Cluster option on the Map tab in addition to the Region options so users could see results for particular GLOBE clusters.
(rc)

Russia in contiguous

I think the map should appear with Russia in contiguous form rather than split on the left and right side of the map.
(rc)

continuum bar at the bottom

Also, the continuum bar at the bottom should ideally also show the Factor/Dimension label and it shouldn’t bleed over onto the map.
(rc)

simpler version asap

I’d rather go for a comparatively simple version asap than the more sophisticated appearance somewhere in the future. The history of the 5C website would not bode well for this…

review colour design

Before going live, it might be good to talk to one of the more ‘artisty’ persons in our group who have a feel for colours (Katharina?) to give some suggestions about the colour design of the various parts of our site.
(wm)

country selection

Besides some basic informations on the study, sample and measures (see Robert’s mail) I would disclose the ‘aggregate values’ for the respective units of analysis, in the first step most likely countries.
(wm)

add a design description tab/footnote

Add an Research Design category (where our approach is described). We have to be transparent and mention that our data although highly heterogeneous and similar to other cross-cultural studies is not completely representative within countries in a tiny footnote somewhere J
(rk)

site analytics

Usage data: Would it be possible to build in a usage data counter of some description? We could then monitor/report e.g. how many unique visits there have been.
(as)

add an 'How to' tab

Data & Analyses: For me at least it would be easier to wait until you have the variables and data more or less sorted before I comment. At the moment you seem to have all the main kinds of analyses/comparisons covered that I would like to do as an outsider. Perhaps the only thing the tool needs is a background section with the list of career success dimensions and their short definitions. In fact, this could be presented within one tab on its own, entitled ‘how to use the tool’. But, I assume something like this was being planned anyway…

country profiles in v2.0

Version 2.0: One thing I would like to see in the next version perhaps, is whether it is possible to produce ‘country profiles’ where one can see all the main descriptive measures summarised for a given country in one place. If we could then add a couple of qualitative paragraphs or bullet points about ‘special features’ of this country setting from a careers perspective, then this profile could be seen as useful, especially for the general public. My initial interest in this was linked to an idea to publish an HBR article on our data with this visualisation tool as a special feature – I haven’t given up on that dream yet!

toughts on 'misuse' of the data

Potential ‘misuse’: hmm, this might be worth of a deeper conversation since I never thought about that but it might be there for people diligently ‘copying’ all the values in a separate file just as we do, e.g., with the available GLOBE data. Should we encourage or discourage this? Other thoughts?
(wm)

share figures on social media

As far as exports are concerned, I think it is also important that it can be shared on social media…in this way we could see a lot of dissemination going.

zusätzlichen Selektionsmöglichkeiten in Tab 3

(mg)

export tables and figures

Exporting/Printing: Have you thought about how users might be able to ‘take away’ the analyses they do? Will they have an option of e.g. exporting tables/figures as a PDF or JPEG file? What about if they tried to print the analyses directly from this webpage?
(as)

less features for v1.0, then add features gradualy

Start small and offer more functionalities later. This will enable us to introduce novelties and extra features on a continuous basis. We’d lose a lot of potential to communicate with our audiences frequently if we went all in. I hope that programing allows for this sequential/gradual approach. At the beginning we can start with only the map with importance and achievement, for example.
(rk)

integrate a survey and compare with existing data

Can we add a functionality that individuals can take a survey with immediate feedback where they are (in this way this tool could become a standing data gathering option; of course potential respondents would be asked something like “Did you try your best and can we store your data and use for research?“
(rk)

only aggregated data is ok

Only use aggregated data for now. This makes a lot of sense as currently a lot of papers are on their way.
(rk)

enough functionality for v1.0

Functionality: For version 1.0 I think this gives more than enough tools for people to use. The focus should now be on the technical side and making the analyses meaningful. I also think getting version 1.0 out sooner rather than later is a good strategy, but I realise data cleaning etc. may slow things down.
