amogos's Introduction

AmogOS

A parody OS inspired by Among Us ඞ. (pronounced A-mog-O-S)

General Info

This was mostly inspired by this reddit post. AmogOS is a meme OS based on the hit game Among Us, in the same vein as Hannah Montana Linux, but it's also developed and made to be a lightweight operating system. AmogOS is also less bloated than some other distros (cough cough Ubuntu). Chad AmogOS vs bloated mainstream distro, as youtuber TechHut put it. Don't take this too seriously :p

Testimonies

Install

Grab install instructions and the download links here on our website: https://amog-os.github.io/install.html.

  • (please note that by downloading AmogOS, you have an increased chance of being infected with the sussy amogus and AMOGID-69 virus. Please refer to here for treatment methods).

Notes

  • We are not responsible for ANY KIND OF DATA LOSS or any kind of problem not relating to AmogOS, USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • AmogOS was never intended to be a replacement for mainstream distributions; it's merely a joke and a sussy OS.
  • For x64 users: It takes like a whole 69420 secs to load the UI from usb boot so be patient!

Website

  • Our only official website is https://amog-os.github.io/, designed by our web developer Fengzi (he's too sus to keep his full name here).

Merch

  • Now stocking very sus stickers, shirts and other sussy stuff. All proceeds will be used to feed our developers and hire artists: https://amogos.myspreadshop.com/.

Support

Features

  • Incredibly sussy
  • Custom wallpapers and start menu icon that can be found in ~/Pictures/.AmogOS/. (or download them here)
  • Grey color palette to match Among Us tablet 😳
  • Custom neofetch logo
  • FOSS Minecraft
  • Uses Openbox WM and LXDE, allowing you to switch to 2 desktop spaces with the scroll wheel, similar to macOS
  • among-sus, an open-source among us alternative playable in terminal (use "among-sus-server" to host a localhost server and among-sus to connect to a server hosted on the current device, or nc <ip on your LAN network> to join a game on your network)
  • -69% compliance with the SUS specification

RPI only features, not present on x86_64 build

  • 64-bit kernel enabled by default for speed, as well as to enable Wine support on devices earlier than the Raspberry Pi 4.
  • Preinstalled CommanderPi, Pi Power Tools, pi-apps, Colour Emoji Font, and Stacer.
  • Wine + Box86 preinstalled for x86 windows syscall translation.
  • piKiss and Pi-Apps preinstalled so you can install some games and also A M O N G U S. (Among Us will run at ~5 fps on multiplayer play. It runs rather poorly, but for a game never intended to run on a CPU the size of a fingertip with 2 layers of syscall translation (x86 windows -> x86 linux -> arm linux), it's decent. A small resolution is needed for the game to run without poor framerates).

Sussy Notes

  • (RPI version only) Default username is "pi" and the password is "raspberry".
  • (x86 version only) Default username is "amogos" and the password is "amogos".
  • AmogOS is not a custom OS, it's just riced RPi OS/Debian Bullseye for RPI and x64 versions respectively. It doesn't have any custom written source code. You can mount the squashfs .sb file and look at the rootfs yourself

amogos's Issues

For issues regarding open source:

From README: AmogOS is not a custom OS, it's just riced RPi OS/Debian Buster. It doesn't have any custom-written source code.

Linux is open sourced
Debian is open sourced
RPi OS is open sourced
And we're just modified RPi OS, there's no code written

Never gonna give the Linux community up.

x86_64 ?

is a 64 arch planned in the future?

sus

this os is sus

sussy baka

i think there's an impostor among us...

Include Android emulator and Among Us apk by default

Android Among Us is f2p so sharing it is morally right.
Pairing it with Anbox or similar software would net much better performance on ARM systems compared to x86 emulation.
As an alternate solution just have a sussy download link on desktop or readme for the apk.

Same problem: Failure to boot on 1.3.2

Tried 1.3.2 on a Pi 400, still fails to boot. I don't see any errors, I can't pinpoint the cause.
On a 16GB MicroSD card, Raspberry Pi 400 with the latest EEPROM installed. Still hangs on the blinking cursor.

IMG_0210.mov

STILL a failure to boot.

Same device (Raspberry Pi 400). Flashed with Balena Etcher and Raspberry Pi Imager on Ubuntu 20.10. Tried on 3 different storage devices, Samsung 16GB MicroSD card, SanDisk 32GB Ultra (Flash Drive), and an Dell 2TB Desktop Hard Drive and SSD.

None of these work. Am I doing something wrong or what? I'm dying to try this and this is starting to get old... older than my grandparents' age combined.

It's said to work, but obviously this isn't.

Based on openSUSE?

Might be a little more sus to base this on the openSUSE Pi port instead of Raspbian.

Opinions are my own and not of my employer.

Possibility of making the project open-sourced and less sussy?

I'd think it would be more beneficial to make this repo open-sourced and not the sussy closed-sourced. Here are the reasons:

  1. Other developers will be able to review the code, while also fixing it. This makes the OS more stable for dripping activity.
  2. It would make the project more transparent and less sussy. Not saying this OS does sussy stuff, but it wouldn't hurt to be transparent.
  3. Optimization. This ties in with reason 1. If the code is more efficiently rewritten, then it means it can run stuff better, such as among us.

dead link

In AmogOS x64 v1.3.0 - "Bullseye on the moon"'s release, before the change log in the installation instructions, there is a link to a x64 readme however its a dead link now and 404s.

Custom Login Screen

I got a friend of mine to create this custom Among Us Login Screen. I plan on using this for my Arch Linux...as soon as I figure out how to.

Failure to boot on Raspberry Pi 400 and 3B

So I understand this is based on Raspberry Pi OS, so I flashed this on a 16GB MicroSD card for maintenance. I flashed the .xz file with Raspberry Pi Imager, and when I boot this it just shows the blinking cursor for hours.

So I cut my losses and decided to reflash it and do the same thing on the Pi 3B, the same result.

Should I try using a different utility like Balena Etcher?

This seems like legit Among Us copy because it is running in Wine and there is no bit-identical clone of Among Us. I want to ask - Is Among Us in this OS pirated or you recreated Among Us?

[Feature] Pacstall for both versions of amogOS

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
A clear and concise description of what the problem is. Ex. I'm always frustrated when [...]
no way to easily install apps that's not on APT or pi-apps
Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.
pacstall uses Arch linux's AUR and brings them to Debian/Ubuntu and it makes your life easier like you can install stuff like uwufetch without compiling it or to easily install the mc java launcher without opening pi apps

Discontinuation of RPi builds and Legacy status for current builds.

Raspberry Pi Builds Discontinued

Effective immediately, the Raspberry Pi/ARM builds of AmogOS are discontinued. This means that they will still be available for download, but support will not be given for them anymore, and issues relating to them will be closed. All references to ARM will soon be removed from the AmogOS repository, and there are no plans to revitalize an ARM build at this time.

There is no longer an effective way to test those builds and guarantee parity with x86_64. Our new aims are much greater, and they cannot be restricted by the underperforming mess of a toolchain we use for Raspberry Pi, AmogOS Pi is plagued by stability and performance issues that we will never be able to solve. There are also package differences and issues with availability for developers and volunteers who are willing to test the OS on real hardware.

Current x86-64 Builds Entering Legacy Status

At 20:59 GMT, October 11th, AmogOS 2 will be released in Alpha, and the current 1.x.x builds will enter legacy status. This means that they will still receive minor support (e.g, user support, help with installation, etc), but they will no longer receive any updates. If for some bizzare reason you are using AmogOS as an extendable imaged system, your system will stay up-to-date in accordance with the Debian repos and support cycle.

As mentioned before, AmogOS Legacy is being discontinued because of the tech debt it has amounted and the skeletal issues it has accumulated. "Fixing" it completely would be a waste of time, and using a new base where we can actually keep track of changes and share them with the community is a better option. AmogOS 2 will also have custom source code and will be an opportunity for new developers to be brought on board.

Discord Drama

Nooz/RPi News, the ex-maintainer, is no longer serving in the AmogOS team. His contributions were extremely important, but due to internal disagreements, the organization leader, Autoboy, has decided to replace him. I am now the core developer and current maintainer of AmogOS, and talks are undergoing with developers to make sure we all direct the project in a healthy direction from now on.

Until next time, and with love.

State of AmogOS | 10th of October, 2021

(While this post comes from my account and writing it was my idea, it was approved by RPi News).

This short post is more on the serious side and aims to address some prominent issues with the OS and how they will be treated in the beta release for AmogOS 2, which is hopefully coming really soon in the 11th of October, 2021. It also aims to keep users updated on the current state of the project.

AmogOS 2

We have switched to Debian-like release naming conventions. The next major version of AmogOS will be called AmogOS 2. It's main goal will be picking out a new base and getting rid of some of the tech debt introduced with AmogOS, it will be based on OpenSUSE and bring foward a very sussy look.

Concerns with openness

The main concern expressed over the OS is one of issues regarding open-source, a common grievance has been that even if the OS is simply a re-imaged riced version of Debian, many other OSes are also basic modifications, and they make their changes sufficiently acessible.

In AmogOS 2, we have begun to address this issue: Not only will custom-written code and scripts be obviously made available on the repo, we will strive to also provide copies (with file paths) of all modified files in the OS, along with a package list to make it way easier for you to remake the system at home.

Installation

Installer issues have plagued AmogOS for a long time, and we are going to take an alternative approach to them, as debugging Calamares has not been a walk in the park. AmogOS will ditch the installer in the name of being an extendable Slax-style live distribution that can be altered to the tastes of the user. This will be very easy, as the imaging tool we use is the same that Slax uses.

In the future, we may introduce an installer, but that is not a promise. For now, we will focus on creating an extendable and smooth live experience for all users.

Dev. Team Status

Unfortunately, one of the original developers, Moon, has taken a temporary break from the project and from the community. He is expected to come back.

HVilaverde has joined the project and been made a contributor.

Custom GRUB Theme

From my understanding you guys are using a Custom GRUB Theme from;
https://github.com/sueperb/tasty-grubs/tree/main/themes/amogus
I think I saw your comment on reddit.

Anyway, I saw the resolution of theme and realized it was too low of quality. I decided to recreate the image, and upscale it too 1920x1080. If you ever want to add this to your project feel free to.

testBG2

Currently I'm working on the font, as the text is not in the proper location and the text is pixelated.
