codefortheplanet.org's Issues

Offering email contact

Contacts of recipes should get a notification mail (if an email address was provided). But more importantly visitors need a way to contact recipe contacts via email. One option to support this is a contact form. It would be much preferred to just list email addresses of the contacts but that will make email spiders just too happy and thus contact forms are one of the very few sensible solutions.

Can you think of any better means for email contact? Then please drop a comment. Or if you want to jump in on development of those features, just do so and see the contribution guidelines below.

Design support is much needed

The style that should be conveyed for code for the planet is a combination of hacker purity and themes of earth and nature.

Regarding nature focus might be on sky and water themes. So blue is one suggestion for a main color.

I'm a backend dev untrained in giving a website a decent look that's beyond an ultra basic style. So I'd be happy with both suggestions and even more so with contributions. No matter how small they are.

If the logo is in your way or you want to improve it, you can do so, but I'd like to stick to the planet-like icon. It's a Dyson Sphere which has slightly related meaning to the whole concept.

Most important is a clear overview and readability I'd say. A main part of the site are lists, so they should look decent as well. The following sites are good in this regard, at least in my humble opinion. But codefortheplanet.org might also profit from not being the next white-dominant site. Software devs and hackers prefer black or darker colors, at least that's my impression. So a dark blue might not be a bad choice.

http://datalook.io/ (regarding the lists it's quite close to codefortheplanet, but for cftp they must be taller)

That's just for some input, to not leave you with nothing. You as a potential contributor actually have a large degree of freedom and will be featured in the list of contributors.

Classification model for topics (concrete topic names) needed

Without investing too much time (I'm planning to do some research) I came up with the following examples for topic tags so far:

  • Open Data
  • Knowledge Transfer
  • Supply Chain Assistants (for Product Designers)
  • Civic Tech
  • Microcredit Platforms
  • Directories (e.g. showcasing projects using open data)
  • Planning Tools
  • Disaster Management (might be more clear to people)

Tags like Planning Tools and Disaster Management might be merged to Planning Tools & Disaster Management. I'm open for discussion on more enumerating tags that might illustrate concepts more effectively.

Currently I think a second tag taxonomy for tech topics would help find the right project. Examples would be:

  • distributed systems
  • app development
  • big data
  • interactive visualizations
  • digital exhibits & installations

More examples would be great and what do you think about having two taxonomies?

User system/Login capabilities

There's no user system/login yet. Currently the way to edit/delete recipes is to append ?admin=1 to the URL. It's perfectly clear that everybody can edit and delete any recipe on the site this way. But currently that doesn't matter too much. The user system for editing, deleting and voting on recipes will follow soon.
