Go to chrome://extensions/ and check "Developer mode", then click "Inspect views: background page". Give me whatever it's printing to the "Console" tab in that window.

Note to self: It might be the way that the popup interacts with the background page. It's using an older version of the API and it smells rather like a race condition.
