Turns out there's next-error-function, so this should work properly now :)

Hmm, we could do something like this:

(define-key deadgrep-mode-map [remap next-error] #'deadgrep-forward)
(define-key deadgrep-mode-map [remap previous-error] #'deadgrep-backward)

but that doesn't help users who explicitly do next-error and previous-error. It feels slightly dishonest to support next-error (search results aren't errors), but as you say rgrep and grep do exactly this.

What would suit your workflow? Do you use the keybindings or the commands themselves?

Yeah I know it's weird but it has some logical? history behind it. I use the commands themselves.. often if I have done a rgrep search and hit (next-error) to go to visit the first match buffer I might hit (next-error) again and from there I am redirected to the next match and it works. I don't think your solution would work with that? It seems like it's overriding the function but only when deadgrep-mode is active?
